Southern Shame, Southern Ghosts (CONFEDERATE FLAG BAN)
World Net Daily ^ | September 30, 2010 | Franklin Raff

Posted on 09/30/2010 3:55:02 AM PDT by golux

The University of Mississippi has terminated its mascot, "Colonel Reb." The mascot, an archetypal Southern gentleman with a hat, cane, and a little bow-tie, is of course racist.

Affable, bearded and jaunty, with a bright costume that cleverly foiled his dark history on the plantation, Col. Reb, when he was alive, looked rather like that other infamous slave-driver, Col. Sanders, whose inscrutable and permanent smile these days (in markets where he still shows his face) offers only a faint clue as to the fortunes he's made in his long, post-war masquerade as a peddler of fried chicken.

"We just want it to be over," said one Mississippi student on the subject of Col. Reb's execution.

Watch your back, Sanders.

There is of course nothing sacred about a football mascot or a corporate brand, and nothing particularly sad about the disappearance of either one, except for the fact that now there is nothing left of Southern symbolism to erase.

(SNIP)

And now we learn that what legions of Americans consider to be a transcendent symbol of extraordinary military leadership and valor, states' rights, indefatigable heroism, enduring pride and strength in the face of terrible odds and calamitous defeat – the Confederate battle flag – is now officially deemed a symbol of hate by the U.S. armed forces. Prospective members of all branches of the armed forces who happen to have a "Confederate flag" tattoo are automatically rejected.

(SNIP)

When they once again encounter their ancestors, which I believe they will, how will so many Americans account for their feeble treachery?

Maybe, like the Mississippi student, they will say: "We just wanted it to be over."

I wonder what some of those old heroes might say in reply....

Well said wardaddy. I’m proud of the South and our heritage and have no use for those who refuse to see the good and who practice the same malicious PC hypocrisy as rhe left. It’s no different than the left dismissing all the good and great about America in order to paint a distorted picture of an exceptional nation.

I don’t know why you NEED to defend him, BUT YOU SURE LOOK DESPERATE.

I think you need to get your eyes examined then.

Let me guess, you teach lefty college students and can baffle them with bullshit all day long and think you can do it here, too?

It's obvious your baffled, but I think you were that way before our discussion even started.

They HAD to force a crisis ... you know, something too good to waste?

The ever popular "We wuz so stoopid we done fell into Linkum's trap" excuse. Anything to admit responsibility for your actions. It's the most common Southern whine, and you do it well.

You really are stupid.

That's what, your third pot-meet-kettle moment today alone? Or is it the fourth?

You act as if there was no other choice but “slavery forever” instead of your war of aggression that destroyed a Republic.

War was what the Davis regime chose to further their aims. And they lost it. Badly. Was it worth it?

The Constitution shredded and we are enjoying a wonderful relationship between the races.

Yeah those pesky blacks must be a constant annoyance to you. Can't live with 'em, can't own 'em. What's a true Lost Causer to do?

Personally I don't think modern southern secession is an issue,

Well, I'm really happy to hear you say that. I was surprised to see it being discussed here.

I think a nationwide cultural divide going to arms is more likely in the future.

There are some changes going on now, but I recall there being a whole bunch of change and turbulence in the sixties when we had the Civil Rights Act (1964), the Voting Rights Act (1965), the creation of Medicare (1965), the creation of Medicaid (1965), Johnson's Great Society, the riots in Watts (1965), the riots in Detroit (1967), the Vietnam War, the draft and all of the cultural craziness that was then going on. I guess I should also mention the several political assassinations, including the assassination of a President.

Taxes are still a scourge but on the day I was born, the highest marginal income tax rates were more than twice as high as they are today.

Our borders have been more or less open since the day I was born. Time and experience has taught me that powerful interests in our two political parties have a disagreement about illegals - the Republicans want illegals here to work, but not to vote and the Democrats want illegals here to vote, but not to work. The bottom line is that powerful interests in both parties want illegals here. And, that is why illegals are here. There is nothing new in any of this.

On this forum, I have advocated phasing out programs like Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security over a three to five year period. I'd like to see how things might go without them, if only for an experiment. We went for thousands of years without any formal welfare state. Most folks here don't seem to have any appetite for any of that.

So, I don't know. I expect we'll continue to have a lot of screaming and shouting, but I'm betting against anything we could call a civil war.

“Yeah those pesky blacks must be a constant annoyance to you. Can’t live with ‘em, can’t own ‘em. What’s a true Lost Causer to do?”

Wow. That was quite a hissy fit. I saw my little niece throw one like that once, but this was far more peevish and yet maintained a sophisticated girlishness.

OK. I’m sorry. You were right. When Abe wanted to round up all the slaves and ship them off to Africa it wasn’t as bad as I said. He wasn’t a demonic killer, he just hired them to do his dirty work. The North loved the Black people, that’s why they took such good care of them before and especially after the war. The whole thing was for their betterment and they were treated like royalty, as they should, us having just killed half a million people to allow them their freedom. And those extra few years that we saved them from slavery allowed them to freely roam the countryside, begging for scraps and dying with dignity.

And you are also right, there really is no race problem today. If there is, it is all my fault and those like me who constantly espouse racial hatred that you obviously see somewhere in my posts. You don’t point it out, but I know it must be there.

Also, although it is hard to admit, because after 5 years and about a zillion posts, you are the only one except your alter ego Zak to suggest that I might be a liberal troll, so I will examine my political beliefs intently.

I’m sorry I called you stupid. You are without a doubt the most brilliant poster I have ever read. Thank you for gracing me with your insight and wisdom, especially in the matter of Lincoln and his resolve to deport all the black folks to a much nicer place than I believed; from all of the historical documents and common knowledge, it is obvious we have all been duped. They were obviously forged or overstated.

I am sure Liberia, with it’s verdant forests, abundance of fresh water, game, food and shelter and friendly natives would have been a pleasure for them. It was very helpful to me personally and I know that others will benefit from this knowledge, too, that the widely held belief that it was not to good a place is in error.

Now, stay away from blunt instruments for a few days, breathe deeply and try not to post anymore, at least for a while. I don’t want you to hurt yourself. Clean the spittle from your keyboard and screen; consider a hobby. Knitting is said to give a calming effect. I think Freud recommended it to his female patients to calm bouts of hysteria, which he described well; they seemed to be very similar to your mindset this afternoon. The wandering thoughts, inability to be clear, fantasy, ranging from wild to calm, yet with a seething rage just below the surface, you are clearly in need of a rest. Perhaps you should take some time off from convincing the world that half of America and its inhabitants are evil.

Perhaps a relaxing trip to Liberia? I hear it is wonderful there this time of year. Don’t take any “dirty looking stones” from anyone, though.

OK Ma’am? Please, don’t do anything drastic. I would feel just awful. If your mind keeps turning to thoughts of Lincoln not being the Savior, push them out. You will recover shortly. Be strong and you will once again feel like a new woman.

Lee, as a gentlemen, pursued and tortured slave women who, given their freedom by the terms of their owner’s will, raped them, sold their/his children into slavery in brothels. He did that for money.

He had Union soldiers murdered, in cold blood, when he could, (if they were of African heritage, or officers who served in African heritage units).

Lee sent a letter requesting pardon. A clerk properly filed that in the bottom of his desk drawer.

What book was this in? Al Sharpton's reparations 101?

You are mistaken, it was civilians that were murdered in cold blood... usually Southerners.

Lee sent a letter requesting pardon. A clerk properly filed that in the bottom of his desk drawer.

He later regretted his surrender.. as all Southerners did and do..

Sincerely and truly, your enemy,

I have my car packed so full

Do hope all goes well for you and yours during this season of change.

Yes, you are fortunate to be transferring to the south, not the other way around.

Whenever my southern born/bred daughter, now living in the greater LA area, comes home, she will comment how, in comparison, happy and kind most southerners are. Her extended California family through marriage is based in Malibu, an area surprisingly more conservative and friendly than most of LA, but we do love our myths.

I spent my early childhood in the north and midwest. I was nine before I ever met a black person. How many Southerners can say that? Or would even want to?

I too travel extensively and have found most fervent equal rights advocates are those not living in racially diverse areas, but filled to the brim with their particular brand. The ones still bitching about it while living in our very segregated nation, are usually those out to feather their nest somehow. You've seen them around. . . the usual tacky poverty pimps.

Have a great trip and relocation adventure!

I was around as a kid in the 60s myself and in a place where the race stuff was quite hot....and I was in a liberal to moderate family active in civil rights and particip[ated myself. My opinion of that since has not been optimistic in the least.

I don't recall many of the issues on the table now even being on the radar then....homosexual marriage, roe v wade, gun control (that was first in 1968), affirmative action and even quotas in private quarters, environmental land and water grabs, demonization of the south, Islaminization of America and the West, massive illegal immigration resulting drastic demographic changes favoring Democrats 4 to 1, disintegration of marriage, disintegration of a once intact, married and responsible child rearing black culture, a lower class white drooge culture that seems endemic at least here in Nashville poor white areas, indentity politics for anyone but white Christian males, no smoking anywhere..not that i do but it is a loss of freedom and so on.

Since you are I think old enough to recall, it seems to me that most of today's so called conservatives would have been Scoop Jackson Democrats in the 1970s...they have been watered down from Magnus’s day

I'm not optimistic about the culture, the demographic voting trends for the future and much more. This is not the America I enjoyed as a lad and those fools here who think it's now better because of their pet single issue are indeed just plain ignorant...and their single issue...the black man....do they really think black culture has improved overall?

and speaking of riots...i could go anywhere black as a boy...including Jackson State the morning after the riots which took place 6 blocks from my school and be warmly welcomed...well now it would be at my mortal peril yet we grant them courtesy anywhere....so much for improved race relations

You have to be kidding me. (not you personally)...i pinged Dixie because she and I have very similar upbringing time and place. Most of the social liberals here opining on what it was like for blacks either exaggerate or they learned it from Cornel West.

I attended one of the first integrated schools in the Houston area, and spent a good bit of my youth in Mississippi. We did not have the race problems we have today. My dearest friend in high school was black. I doubt if I would be welcome in her neighborhood today so much hate has been stirred up by the media and the poverty pimps. Too much of the south has been reshaped into images portrayed in books, movies and yellow journalism. It is bad. I hope the ones that created this mess reap the whirlwind from it.

They called upon the international community to recognize the independence and sovereignty of Liberia. Britain was one of the first nations to recognize the new country. The United States did not recognize Liberia until the American Civil War.

Southern states blocked the recognition of both Haiti and Liberia, for fear of the example that republics made up of former slaves would set. It was only with the southern delegates absent from congress that the US was able to recognize those nations.

Shortly after I took this photo, this reenactor had a misfire, in that all six chambers went off at the same time, burning his hand. I don't know how badly he was injured, but the paramedics were working with him the last that I saw.

The reenactment at Perryville this weekend was outstanding. Almost three hundred fifty reenactors were there, as were almost three thousand spectators.

This Henry rifle was carried by Union General John Buford at Gettysburg. Following his death that winter, it was sent to his family here in Kentucky, where it has remained in their private possession ever since. General Buford's great-great-grandson, State Senator Tom Buford, has temporarily loaned the rifle to the Perryville museum for an exhibit that will only be there through the end of October.

I hope the pictures I posted on #'s 458 and 459 are showing up.

I went to the reenactment at Perryville over the weekend, and these are just a handful of the photos that I took. The reenactment was of just a small portion of the battle; a fight between two Arkansas regiments and a brigade of Union infantry, reinforced by a weak brigade of Union cavalry. The Union forces were able to capture the hill and the creek bed from the Confederate troops (the entire region was in the midst of the worst drought in recorded history and the two sides encountered each other while searching for water) which was one of the few Union victories of this battle. The main Confederate force later conceded the field after realizing that they were outnumbered almost three-to-one.
