The University of Mississippi has terminated its mascot, "Colonel Reb." The mascot, an archetypal Southern gentleman with a hat, cane, and a little bow-tie, is of course racist.
Affable, bearded and jaunty, with a bright costume that cleverly foiled his dark history on the plantation, Col. Reb, when he was alive, looked rather like that other infamous slave-driver, Col. Sanders, whose inscrutable and permanent smile these days (in markets where he still shows his face) offers only a faint clue as to the fortunes he's made in his long, post-war masquerade as a peddler of fried chicken.
"We just want it to be over," said one Mississippi student on the subject of Col. Reb's execution.
Watch your back, Sanders.
There is of course nothing sacred about a football mascot or a corporate brand, and nothing particularly sad about the disappearance of either one, except for the fact that now there is nothing left of Southern symbolism to erase.

I think a nationwide cultural divide going to arms is more likely in the future.
There are some changes going on now, but I recall there being a whole bunch of change and turbulence in the sixties when we had the Civil Rights Act (1964), the Voting Rights Act (1965), the creation of Medicare (1965), the creation of Medicaid (1965), Johnson's Great Society, the riots in Watts (1965), the riots in Detroit (1967), the Vietnam War, the draft and all of the cultural craziness that was then going on. I guess I should also mention the several political assassinations, including the assassination of a President.
Taxes are still a scourge but on the day I was born, the highest marginal income tax rates were more than twice as high as they are today.
Our borders have been more or less open since the day I was born. Time and experience has taught me that powerful interests in our two political parties have a disagreement about illegals - the Republicans want illegals here to work, but not to vote and the Democrats want illegals here to vote, but not to work. The bottom line is that powerful interests in both parties want illegals here. And, that is why illegals are here. There is nothing new in any of this.
On this forum, I have advocated phasing out programs like Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security over a three to five year period. I'd like to see how things might go without them, if only for an experiment. We went for thousands of years without any formal welfare state. Most folks here don't seem to have any appetite for any of that.
So, I don't know. I expect we'll continue to have a lot of screaming and shouting, but I'm betting against anything we could call a civil war.

OK. I’m sorry. You were right. When Abe wanted to round up all the slaves and ship them off to Africa it wasn’t as bad as I said. He wasn’t a demonic killer, he just hired them to do his dirty work. The North loved the Black people, that’s why they took such good care of them before and especially after the war. The whole thing was for their betterment and they were treated like royalty, as they should, us having just killed half a million people to allow them their freedom. And those extra few years that we saved them from slavery allowed them to freely roam the countryside, begging for scraps and dying with dignity.

I don't recall many of the issues on the table now even being on the radar then....homosexual marriage, roe v wade, gun control (that was first in 1968), affirmative action and even quotas in private quarters, environmental land and water grabs, demonization of the south, Islaminization of America and the West, massive illegal immigration resulting drastic demographic changes favoring Democrats 4 to 1, disintegration of marriage, disintegration of a once intact, married and responsible child rearing black culture, a lower class white drooge culture that seems endemic at least here in Nashville poor white areas, indentity politics for anyone but white Christian males, no smoking anywhere..not that i do but it is a loss of freedom and so on.

Shortly after I took this photo, this reenactor had a misfire, in that all six chambers went off at the same time, burning his hand. I don't know how badly he was injured, but the paramedics were working with him the last that I saw.
The reenactment at Perryville this weekend was outstanding. Almost three hundred fifty reenactors were there, as were almost three thousand spectators.
This Henry rifle was carried by Union General John Buford at Gettysburg. Following his death that winter, it was sent to his family here in Kentucky, where it has remained in their private possession ever since. General Buford's great-great-grandson, State Senator Tom Buford, has temporarily loaned the rifle to the Perryville museum for an exhibit that will only be there through the end of October.
I went to the reenactment at Perryville over the weekend, and these are just a handful of the photos that I took. The reenactment was of just a small portion of the battle; a fight between two Arkansas regiments and a brigade of Union infantry, reinforced by a weak brigade of Union cavalry. The Union forces were able to capture the hill and the creek bed from the Confederate troops (the entire region was in the midst of the worst drought in recorded history and the two sides encountered each other while searching for water) which was one of the few Union victories of this battle. The main Confederate force later conceded the field after realizing that they were outnumbered almost three-to-one.
