Baroness Karen von Blixen-Finecke (pen name Isak Dinesen), author of Out of Africa, knew Beryl Markham. "She befriended the Danish writer Karen Blixen during the years that Blixen was managing her family's coffee farm in the Ngong hills outside Nairobi." Von Blixen lived in Kenya about 1914-1931 and died in Denmark in 1962.
How in the world did we all miss this? I’m sure that image of his article has been posted before because I know it has been discussed many many times. So there is no such person as BaraCK Hussein Obama II because the original was BaraK. Since that is the spelling of his name, that is the way it should be on both the Hawaiian COLB and on the other Kenyan certificate that started this thread. It is also the spelling that should be on the divorce papers and the birth announcement. How could Stanley Ann not know this? If she filled out the birth forms she would have spelled it correctly—but if someone else did it, like her mother or father, it would be an easy mistake. It’s like I know my husband’s name is FrederiCK and would never spell it incorrectly but someone else might use Frederic or Fredrick. He also pronounced his name BEAR-ik with the emphasis on the first syllable according to an interview article that was done with his Hawaiian friends. Somebody made a big boo-boo.

FAMOUS PERSONS
Barack Hussein Obama II (born August 4, 1961) is the forty-fourth and current President of the United States of America.
NO OTHER BARACKs SEEM TO EXIST.
I think she’s suffering from footinmouth disease - like Gibbs.
The female presenter says (IIRC) OBAMA WAS BORN IN HAWAII (no agenda there) and then she lets the very nervous auntie ramble on, who gets herself twisted in knots trying to explain how Stanley Ann couldn’t have had a baby in Kenya because Obama sr wasn’t there...
She’s half right. Obama Sr wasn’t there. He was in Hawaii.
See post #9123...didn’t BO know the correct spelling?
Heh.
I noticed the numbers just now on “The Long Thread.” Wonder if anyone has cross-linked the two threads?
Maybe not—he probably only saw the incorrect spelling all his life and his mother may not have considered it important to make the correction. He certainly didn’t know how Sr. pronounced it. He was closer to that when he went by Barry. I’ve also noticed that whenever I’ve seen the name or the word in other places it was never spelled with the CK.
Wasn’t Beryl Markham the woman portayed by Merly Streep in “Out of Africa”?
It’s a classic case of translation from a script that doesn’t have 26 alphabet letters as we do. That’s how you get SUTORO and SOETORO.
As long as it sounds the same, they can write it anyway they like.
Why are the divorce papers spelled incorrectly? Then you are saying someone else had the papers done for her?
No, Streep played Karen Blixen.

The "Felicity" character in the movie was supposed to be based on Markham.
I don’t think that link is ever going to work; looks like blogger last posted in 2008, but I found this & it does work;

Back to original question: I cannot find in “Dreams” anything about late-pregnancy visit to Kenya.. In fact, I seem to find the contrary. On page 218ff there follows many pages as if grandmother is talking (this has probably been sourced on FR long ago but since question is raised...)
This is Obama writing as if grandmother is writing) Not much help here except to note, if facts are not true, he gets to tell the story with deniability because it is grandmother’s recollection :
“One year after Barack and Kezia were married, Roy was born. Two years later came Auma. To support this family, Barack had to take any work he could find, and he finally convinced another Arab, named Suleiman, to take him on as an office boy. But Barack remained deeply depressed, almost desperate. Many of his age mates from Maseno, the ones who were not as gifted as him, were already leaving for Makarere University in Ugand Some had even gone to London to study. They could expect big jobs when they returned to a liberated Kenya. Barack saw that he might end up working as the clerk of these men for the rest of his life.
Then, good fortune struck, in the form of two American women. They were teaching in Nairobi, connected to some religious organization, I think, and one day they came into the office where Barack was working. Your father struck a conversation with them, and soon these women became his friends. They loaned him books to read and invited him their house, and when they saw how smart he was, they told him that he should go to a university. He explained that had no money and no secondary school certificate, but these women said they could arrange for him to take a correspondence course that would give him the certificate he needed. If he was successful, they said, they would try to help him get into a university in America....
He still had no money, though, and no university had yet accepted him.... So Barack wrote to universities in America. He wrote and he wrote. Finally, a university in Hawaii wrote back and told him they would give him a scholarship. No one knew where this place was, but Barack didnt care. He gathered up his pregnant wife and son and dropped them off with me, and in less than a month he was gone.
What happened in America, I cannot say. I know that after less than two years we received a letter from Barack saying that he had met this American girl, Ann, and that he would like to marry her. Now, Barry, you have heard that your grandfather disapproved of this marriage. This is true, but it is not for the reasons you say. You see, Onyango did not believe your father was behaving responsibly.
He wrote back to Barack, saying, How can you marry this white woman when you have responsibilities at home? Will this woman return with you and live as a Luo woman? Will she accept that you already have a wife and children? I have not heard of white people understanding such things. Their women are jealous and used to being pampered. But if I am wrong in this matter, let the girls father come to my hut and discuss the situation properly. For this is the affairs of elders, not children. He also wrote to your grandfather Stanley and said many of these same things.
As you know, your father went ahead with the marriage. He only told Onyango what had happened after you were born. We are all happy that this marriage took place, because without it we would not have you here with us now. But your grandfather was very angry at the time, and threatened to have Baracks visa revoked. And because he had lived with white people, perhaps Onyango did understand the white peoples customs better than Barack did. For when Barack finally returned to Kenya, we discovered that you and your mother had stayed behind, just as Onyango had warned.
Soon after Barack came, a white woman arrived in Kisumu looking for him. At first we thought this must be your mother, Ann. Barack had to explain that this was a different woman, Ruth. He said that he had met her at Harvard and that she had followed him to Kenya without his knowledge. Your grandfather didnt believe this story and thought that again Barack had disobeyed him. But I wasnt so sure, for, in fact, Barack did seem reluctant to marry Ruth at first. Im not sure what finally swayed him.
Maybe he felt Ruth would be better suited to his new life. Or maybe he heard gossip that Kezia had enjoyed herself too much during his absence, even though I told him that this gossip was not true. Or maybe he just cared for Ruth more than he liked to admit. “
I checked “Audacity,” thinking poster may have mixed up books. Couldn’t find any reference there either.
thanks, I didn’t expect that statement would be found, we would have been all over it...
you deserve a medal! (Might pay you now to wash out your mind.)
LOL; I was going to tell you similar reason not to read book; the environmental police would turn you in for using too much water in such a short period of time.
Searching is bad enough, but at least both books are available for quick digital searches. We could rotate toxic chore, if need be, to avoid danger of mesmerization.
So what happened next? Did Stanley Armour go on the boat to Kenya with Stanley Anne and Barack Sr?

A FReeper writes: This birth stuff will go nowhere. Lets drop it. Go back and look at this LONG thread (now over 9,000 posts) Look at how many trolls stopped by to refute, condemn and belittle the document. Why waste time trying to convince "conspiracy nuts" (their label) that something is "obviously" fake? YOU DON'T -- unless you think there might be at least a hint of reality and you're trying to convince others it's not. Meanwhile, there's enough EVIDENCE to show that NOT EVEN OBAMA knew where his mother was in 1961-1962, like this:
In 1959, at the age of twenty-three, he (Barack Obama Sr) arrived at the University of Hawaii as that institutions first African student. In a Russian language course, he met an awkward, shy American girl, only eighteen, and they fell in love. The girls parents, wary at first, were won over by his charm and intellect; the young couple married, and she bore them a son, to whom he bequeathed his name. He won another scholarship-this time to pursue his Ph.D. at Harvard-but not the money to take his new family with him. A separation occurred, and he returned to Africa to fulfill his promise to the continent. The mother and child stayed behind |
Conflicting with OBAMA'S OWN wordsfrom http://www.historylink.org/index.cfm?DisplayPage=pf_output.cfm&file_id=8926Dunham also registered for classes at the University of Washington for both the winter and spring quarters of 1962. (She took extension courses, attending classes at night, during the autumn 1961 and winter 1962 quarters, but in the spring of 1962 switched to a more traditional schedule, attending classes during the day. Her grades were good: Of the seven classes she took that academic year, she had three As and three Bs; she audited the seventh course.) Neighbor Toutonghi periodically babysat Barack for a couple of months while Dunham attended night classes during the early months of 1962. Years later Toutonghi recounted, I remember his being very large and very curious and very alert ... . I dont remember any undue fussing at all (Neyman); maybe this was a harbinger of the future laid-back persona that the president would become known for decades later. But what Dunham and her young son did in Seattle after the end of the 1962 spring quarter is mostly a mystery, though they stayed for at least part of the summer of 1962. High school classmate Barbara Rusk recalls visiting them at the Capitol Hill apartment during that summer, noting that Dunham was not in school or working at the time. Other friends have also suggested the two stayed through at least part if not all of the summer. But in December 1962 Dunham transferred her transcript to the University of Hawaii, and enrolled there in the spring quarter of 1963. Given the demands that the young single mother faced raising her infant son alone in Seattle, they may have left shortly after Baracks first birthday -- perhaps about the time the future president was taking his first steps. |
What is the common sense answer? Canada (with a marriage in Kenya) is certainly more plausible than either in Hawaii ...
Don't give up ... we're almost there.
Placemark.
Thank you for your perseverance and hard work in all of this.
I pray we will get the full story soon.
The last impression I’ve had of SADunhamObama
was shy. Awkward .. maybe. Shy... no.
