CPAC Chairman: Palin Not Ready for Presidential Run

Thursday, July 9, 2009 8:27 AM

By: Ronald Kessler

Sarah Palin needs to stop whining about unfair media coverage and get over the fact that some people don’t like her, Dave Keene, chairman of the American Conservative Union, tells Newsmax.

Palin doesn’t seem to get that politics is a tough game, says Keene, one of the country’s most astute political observers.

The American Conservative Union, with 1 million members, runs the annual Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Washington and publishes an annual "Rating of Congress," the gold standard for ideological assessments of members of Congress.

“You’ve got to recognize that there are people who want you to fail,” Keene says. “And if you spend your time worrying about them, or whining about what they say, at the very least it’ll get you off your game, because you ought to be worried about what you’re going to do, not about what they’re going to do to you.”

Resigning as governor of Alaska only compounded Palin’s problems, which have been accumulating since the November election, Keene says.

“In the period leading up to the resignation, she needed to get over the fact that people didn’t like her,” Keene says. “Get over the fact that she harbored resentment for the McCain people that used her. All of those things are true, but she got more out of it than they did, and she had to begin to move on with what she needed to establish in terms of her own image, to move to the next level. And she delayed doing that.

"Now it becomes more difficult because of the way in which she bailed out on the governorship.”

David Keene, Managing Associate of the Carmen Group Lobbying Firm, and Head of CPAC, Alexandria, VA.

Political contributions in 2008 election cycle:

KEENE, DAVID, ALEXANDRIA,VA 22314 THE CARMEN GROUP/EXEC 5/1/07 $1,000 Specter, Arlen (R)

KEENE, DAVID, ALEXANDRIA,VA 22314 THE CARMEN GROUP/EXEC 12/19/07 $800 Specter, Arlen (R)

KEENE, DAVID, ALEXANDRIA,VA 22314 THE CARMEN GROUP/EXEC 12/19/07 $200 Specter, Arlen (R)

Add to this the fact that this bum also endorsed Romney in December 2007 and you got a guy that has "part of the problem" stamped on his forehead.

Another brainless addition to the thread. Thanks for proving my point.

“I really like Sarah, she connects, shes probably a lot smarter than she is given credit for.”

Hey, that was quite a compliment. Yeah, obviously you like her...who doesn’t give her credit for being smart? I’ll bet you don’t sweat much for a fat slob...

"not anyone who believes, rightfully, that she has been crucified by the press, the democraps, the GOP wimps"

Actually, I believe that's mostly true as well.

"and people like you who accuse anyone on her side in this fight of being some kind of mental cripple. "

Remember, you said that, not me or any other Sarah-skeptic.

Valid, perhaps. But that still doesn't mean it was good for her political future, at least not if she wants to run for the Presidency.

Again, you don't get it. She didn't do this with concerns to her "political future." She resigned for the good of Alaska and its residents.

Ridiculous. Mark Sanford, for one, was fighting Obama and his stimulus pretty hard. And ever hear of Tom Coburn, Mike Pence, Paul Ryan, or Jim DeMint?

They fought the stimulus bill but only Palin has been criticizing Zero's overall policies. Also, only Palin explained why the stimulus was bad and what impact it would have on Alaskan residents.

Palin's obviously been a strong voice, but this "Palin or hell" view so many here take, that she's the only true conservative in a wilderness of RINOs and wimps, is both absurd and unproductive.

I just don't see anyone out there right now who has the charisma and authenticity that Palin has.

And just how could she have ‘toughened up’ anymore against what she has already withstood, against herself, her family, and her office? Tough? You haven’t seen tough, but it’s coming.

"And the words 'you guys' tells me you are not one of us."

I'm pretty sure he meant you Sarahbots, and if people haven't figured it out already...I'm not one of you either

“But this is beside the point: the fact is that these days, a lot of FReepers are ready to turn on ANYBODY, whatever their resume, principles, or bona fides..”

I have seen no such criticism of Gov. Palin in any of these areas; just outrageous slurs and personal attacks.

Does this count as an ad hominem?

This guy is not a constructive critic. He's a crypto-lib who managed to get himself the chair of the ACU.

“you ought to be worried about what you’re going to do”

Well David Keene, Arlen Specter knew EXACTLY what to do. He looked at the party that brung him to the dance, and stabbed it in the chest.

"And yet if someone so much as suggests she won’t be ready to run in 2012—not in response to Palin herself, since she hasn’t said she would, but in response to the numerous calls of “Palin 2012!” on this site—you’ll be the first to attack him."

No, that would be me...

Don’t confuse genuine enthusiasm for a promising candidate with worship.

It's one thing to express genuine enthusiasm for a candidate. It's another to launch a sea of ad hominems at anyone who says so much as one negative word about her.

I've criticized all the potential candidates in 2012 (usually their politics or political strengths rather than them personally). They all have some weaknesses. But only when I say something negative about Palin do I get viciously attacked.

Maybe it's just this:

I don't think he trashed Sarah. :) He merely observed and said what he thought.

RC, I think your recovery has aquite a way to go. Or do you think that all the garbage thrown at her isn't what the thrower thinks? Don't kid yourself -- those b-stards are serious, and mean every word they say.

Palin doesn’t seem to get that politics is a tough game, says Keene, one of the country’s most astute political observers.

Really? Palin doesn't know that politics is a rough game? Sarah knows first hand how rough politics is.

“You’ve got to recognize that there are people who want you to fail,” Keene says. “And if you spend your time worrying about them, or whining about what they say, at the very least it’ll get you off your game, because you ought to be worried about what you’re going to do, not about what they’re going to do to you.”

More stupid comments from Keene. It's becoming apparent to most -- but not Keene -- that Sarah is leaving her local enemies behind and she is coming to the lower 48 to take on the enemies of this country.

“In the period leading up to the resignation, she needed to get over the fact that people didn’t like her,”

Keene doesn't have a clue, he really doesn't get it. What a pathetic piece.

Right.

Even if she doesn’t run for Prez, she can still be an effective spokesperson. Maybe a traveling female Rush Limbaugh. :)

Whatever she chooses to do, she can do it well, I am sure.

I will be surprised if her ultimate goal involves being President.

And I agree: we shouldn’t be fighting between ourselves as much...especially over Sarah.

None of us on FR, I hope, think of her as toxic—like Steve Schmidt does. I don’t think Keene thinks of her like that, either...

Anyway, we’ll see.

"If you can find me an elected Republican, who is a potential presidential candidate, who is taking on the Obama administration head-on and defending conservative principles, then let me know and I'll worship him/her too."

You call THAT worship?? Not hardly. Try dictionary.com Dan

Keane is correct. Governor Palin needs to toughen up and worry about what she is doing, not what others say about her.

You have no idea do you.
