A Pittsburgh police commander says a volunteer for the McCain campaign who reported being robbed and attacked near a bank ATM in Bloomfield has confessed to making up the story. Police say charges will be filed. More details to follow.
She attends Texas A&M and the myspace page lists another college, I think it’s a different person.

Well, it was initially a legitimate news story in that a police report was filed.
Then her story began to unravel.
What a shameful thing for someone to perpetrate—whatever her motivations were. I trust that if she were a McCain volunteer, she’ll be quickly cut loose. The last thing they need are people like that on the team.

It wasn’t jumping to conclusions. People were making skeptical statements based off of the picture which did not substantiate her claims. Hell, even after a facial plastic surgeon weighed in on this, folks still wanted to drink the coolaid.
I wouldn't fault any FReeper for believing this story to be true, and would certainly not call a fellow FReeper a "sucker". When I first saw the DRUDGE headline, I myself thought that this attack was completely plausible, especially considering the true stories of McCain signs being stolen and cars being keyed.
When the photo of the girl was released, I thought that the attacker carved the "B" while kneeling above her, facing her feet. However, the "B" was more of a scratch than a "carving". In addition, I wondered why she had refused medical treatment.
After viewing her twitter and myspace pages I became more suspicious of the story.
And now, after an investigation, it turns out that she was lying.
She needs some jail time and mental health assistance.
However, it's obvious that there is a great amount of tension concerning this Election, and it is still prudent to be vigilant against real election-related violence.

I saw the big red headline, too, and I too was shocked and angry. I almost posted something on the thread but stopped myself. I decided to wait to hear the whole story first.
We’re all capable of waiting to hear more, or checking further into some of these stories. Everyone jumps the gun sometimes, but in this election, Republicans really need to be extra cautious.
That said, is it true that she’s only been a volunteer for the McCain campaign for a week? Is it true that that MySpace page is hers? (If so, she’s a Ron Paul supporter and an admitted hoaxster.) If all true, the McCain camp needs to release a statement, imho: “This woman first volunteered a week ago, and she previously was a Ron Paul supporter. We’re checking further into this person and working with the police.” Let’s stick to the facts.
