Critical Threats: Blank When None
How The West Was Won

The rapid and unexpected decline of the Sunni insurgency in Iraq was officially recognized this week, when Maj. Gen. John Kelly, commanding the Marine Expeditionary Force, turned operational control of Anbar Province over to the Iraqi army and police.

Anbar, a vast expanse of desert the size of North Carolina, had been the stronghold of the Sunni insurgency. For years, foreign fighters loyal to al-Qaida had sneaked across Iraq's northwestern border with Syria, into Anbar and down a "rat line" of safe houses in Haditha, Ramadi and Hit.

From Fallujah, the arch terrorist Zarqawi dispatched suicide bombers to murder hundreds of Shiites in Baghdad. So fearsome were the al-Qaida leaders in Iraq that by 2005 they had taken control or intimidated Sunni resistance cells 10 times their size. Read More

Amir Abdul Majid became a Shaheed

Snippets: For the short time period he managed to gather Muslim youth under black banners of Jamaat "Shariat", who wanted to establish Allah's laws on the territory of the Caucasus. The territory of Jihad expanded far to the south, and daily operations of the Mujahideen to destroy infidels and apostates become a daily reality of war in Dagestan.

We ask people to stay away from locations of infidels and apostates, to not stay next to them, their vehicles and houses. In the near future, new powerful operations of the Mujahideen will shake infidels and apostates to the ground and will show strength and wisdom of the slaves of Allah!

Praise to Allah, more and more young people come out to Jihad, more and more Muslims joining caravan of Jihad! By Allah's will, arrival to the ranks of the Mujahideen and the oath by Sheikh Said Buryatsky to Amir Dokka Umarov, served as a powerful dawat and example for the youth of the Caucasus and Russia. Let Allah make them even better. Allah Akbar!

UK terror chief under house arrest

A SUSPECTED terrorist mastermind with close links to the July 21 and liquid-bomb plotters is being secretly held under house arrest at his home in north London.

The suspect – who because of a court gagging order can be referred to only as AY – has been placed under a strict control order by a High Court judge on the recommendation of MI5.

No lessons learnt, no security checks at hospitals

Security agencies seemed to have learnt no lessons from the July 26 terror attack in Ahmedabad where two hospitals were also targeted. No safety measures were taken at major hospitals in New Delhi after a series of blasts Saturday evening killed at least 18 people and injured 100 people.

IM email warns of more attacks

The e-mail hints indirectly that the group may also resort to abduction and ransom. It threatens 'disastrous consequences of the injustice and oppression inflicted upon the Muslims all over the country.'

Saudi official kills own daughter for conversion to Christianity

A government official in Saudi Arabia cut out his daughter's tongue and burned her to death after learning she had become a follower of Jesus Christ. The man, who was not named in the news report, works for the Commission for Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, a government agency that enforces religious purity.

The girl came to know about Jesus Christ through the Internet and when her father learned about her decision, "a heated debate on religion" ensued, according to International Christian Concern (www.persecution.org), a Washington, D.C.-based human rights group. The man is in custody but news reports gave no indication as to his identity or when the crime occurred.

"Saudi Arabia is intolerant of Christianity and non-Muslim faiths," a press statement from International Christian Concern said. "Its education curriculum openly inculcates hatred against Christians and other non-Muslims through their textbooks and teachers. Saudi Arabian officials are using their huge oil wealth to export Wahabbism (the most intolerant version of Islam) to other countries including in the United States."

“88 Dead After Plane Crashes In Russia”
WCBSTV.COM ^ | 13 SEPTEMBER 2008 | AP
Posted on September 13, 2008 7:44:49 PM PDT by Extremely Extreme Extremist

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “MOSCOW (AP) - A plane carrying 88 people crashed in central Russia early Sunday killing all aboard, an emergency official said.

The Boeing-737 traveling from Moscow to Perm went down about 3:40 a.m. Sunday, Emergency Situations Ministry spokeswoman Irina Andrianova said.

The plane, operated by a division of Aeroflot, was on its approach to land in Perm when it crashed into an unpopulated area of the city, she said. A total of 82 passengers, including seven children, and six crew were on board, she said.

She said there was no damage or deaths on the ground and investigators were working to determine what caused the incident.

There was no indication of a terrorist attack, she said.”

For Immediate Release
Office of the Press Secretary

President’s Radio Address

In Focus: National Security
In Focus: Remembering 9/11

THE PRESIDENT: Good morning. This week, Americans marked seven years since the terrorist attacks that shook our Nation on September 11, 2001. On that day, we witnessed unspeakable destruction perpetrated by evil men. But we also witnessed selfless acts of valor and compassion performed by courageous citizens. And we saw the strength of the American people as they rallied in defense of the Nation.

On Thursday, I dedicated a new 9/11 memorial at the Pentagon. In the years to come, parents will visit this site to remember children who boarded Flight 77 for a field trip, and never emerged from the wreckage. Husbands and wives will visit the memorial to remember spouses who left for work one morning, and never returned home. And people from across our Nation will visit to remember the heroism of rescue workers who rushed into the burning Pentagon to save the lives of their fellow citizens.

Seven years after the attacks of 9/11, this spirit of heroism lives on. We see it in the courageous members of the United States Armed Forces. These brave men and women have volunteered to defend our Nation during a time of war. Every day, they are confronting our enemies abroad so we do not have to face them here at home. And because of their efforts, our Nation is safer today than it was seven years ago.
In Afghanistan, where the 9/11 attacks were planned, our men and women in uniform toppled the Taliban regime, destroyed al Qaeda camps, and liberated more than 25 million Afghans. In the years since, members of the Taliban and al Qaeda have sought to regain power through acts of terror. The United States and our allies are meeting this challenge head on. We will not allow Afghanistan to once again become a safe haven for terror.

Earlier this week, I announced additional American troop deployments to Afghanistan. In November, a Marine battalion that was scheduled to deploy to Iraq will deploy to Afghanistan instead. It will be followed in January by an Army combat brigade. This continuing commitment to the Afghan people illustrates a stark contrast: While the terrorists and extremists deliberately target and murder the innocent, coalition and Afghan forces risk their lives to protect the innocent.

America is also on the offense against terrorists and extremists in Iraq. Since we launched the surge last year, violence has fallen to its lowest point since the spring of 2004. While the enemy in Iraq is still dangerous, we seized the offensive, and Iraqi forces are becoming increasingly capable of leading and winning the fight. As a result, we’ve been able to carry out a policy of “return on success” — reducing the number of American combat forces in Iraq as conditions on the ground there continue to improve.

After reviewing conditions in Iraq, General Petraeus and the Joint Chiefs of Staff have recommended additional force reductions. By February, about 8,000 additional American troops will have returned home without replacement. And if this progress in Iraq continues to hold, General Petraeus and our military leaders believe additional reductions will be possible in the first half of 2009.

In the seven years since the attacks of September the 11th, the men and women of our Armed Forces and their wonderful families have been a source of pride for the Nation. Those who do not wear the uniform also have a responsibility to serve our country. After 9/11, I called on Americans to devote at least 4,000 hours — or two years over the course of a lifetime — to volunteering in their communities. This morning, I renew that call. Serving others is more than just a generous act — it is essential to the health of our society. And as any volunteer can tell you, when you bring hope to the lives of others, the life you enrich most is usually your own.

Thank you for listening.

END

Treasury Targets Venezuelan Government Officials Supporting the FARC

Washington, DC—The U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) today designated two senior Venezuelan government officials, Hugo Armando Carvajal Barrios and Henry de Jesus Rangel Silva, and one former official, Ramon Rodriguez Chacin, for materially assisting the narcotics trafficking activities of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), a narco-terrorist organization.

“Today’s designation exposes two senior Venezuelan government officials and one former official who armed, abetted, and funded the FARC, even as it terrorized and kidnapped innocents,” said Adam J. Szubin, Director of OFAC. “This is OFAC’s sixth action in the last ten months against the FARC. We will continue to target and isolate those individuals and entities that aid the FARC’s deadly narco-terrorist activities in the Americas.”

Hugo Armando Carvajal Barrios is the Director of Venezuela’s Military Intelligence Directorate (DGIM). His assistance to the FARC includes protecting drug shipments from seizure by Venezuelan anti-narcotics authorities and providing weapons to the FARC, allowing them to maintain their stronghold of the coveted Arauca Department. Arauca, which is located on the Colombia/Venezuela border, is known for coca cultivation and cocaine production. Carvajal Barrios also provides the FARC with official Venezuelan government identification documents that allow FARC members to travel to and from Venezuela with ease.

Henry de Jesus Rangel Silva, the Director of Venezuela’s Directorate of Intelligence and Prevention Services or DISIP, is in charge of intelligence and counterintelligence activities for the Venezuelan government. Rangel Silva has materially assisted the narcotics trafficking activities of the FARC. He has also pushed for greater cooperation between the Venezuelan government and the FARC.

Ramon Emilio Rodriguez Chacin, who was Venezuela’s Minister of Interior and Justice until September 8, is the Venezuelan government’s main weapons contact for the FARC. The FARC uses its proceeds from narcotics sales to purchase weapons from the Venezuelan government. Rodriguez Chacin has held numerous meetings with senior FARC members, one of which occurred at the Venezuelan government’s Miraflores Palace in late 2007. Rodriguez Chacin has also assisted the FARC by trying to facilitate a $250 million dollar loan from the Venezuelan government to the FARC in late 2007. We cannot confirm whether the loan materialized.

On May 29, 2003, President George W. Bush identified the FARC as a significant foreign narcotics trafficker, or drug kingpin, pursuant to the Kingpin Act. In 2001, the State Department designated the FARC as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist pursuant to Executive Order 13224, and in 1997 as a Foreign Terrorist Organization.

This OFAC action continues ongoing efforts under the Kingpin Act to apply financial measures against significant foreign narcotics traffickers and their organizations worldwide. In addition to the 75 drug kingpins that have been designated by the President, 460 businesses and individuals have been designated pursuant to the Kingpin Act since June 2000.

Today’s action freezes any assets the designated entities and individuals may have under U.S. jurisdiction and prohibits U.S. persons from conducting financial or commercial transactions involving those assets. Penalties for violations of the Kingpin Act range from civil penalties of up to $1,075,000 per violation to more severe criminal penalties. Criminal penalties for corporate officers may include up to 30 years in prison and fines of up to $5,000,000. Criminal fines for corporations may reach $10,000,000. Other individuals face up to 10 years in prison for criminal violations of the Kingpin Act and fines pursuant to Title 18 of the United States Code.

One of Abdullah’s family friends, Anwar Muflahi, said, “The main concern is her safety.”

Family members and friends of Etidal Abdullah held a prayer vigil even though she called News 4 and Police earlier this week to say she’s okay and to stop searching for her.

Anwar Muflahi, said, “Some of her family members did listen to the tape and it was her.””

Fresh violence in Orissa, India

By James Varghese
Special to ASSIST News Service
ORISSA, INDIA (ANS) — Fresh violence has been reported in strife-torn Kandhamal district in Orissa, with angry people setting several houses on fire in Kurtamgarh and Mangapanga villages in Orissa this evening (September 12).

This news was reported on the website http://thehindu.com.

According to the website, the two villages come under Tumudibandha area where the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader Swami Lakshmanananda and four others were killed on August 23 by a Maoist groups.

The website said administration officials and police had rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation.

Media reports say that more than 100 people reportedly have been beaten, hacked or burned to death since the mob violence began. It is estimated tens of thousands of Christians have fled their homes, many remaining in seclusion in forests and others in relief camps with police guards.

The reports also said that Manmohan Singh, India’s prime minister, has threatened to send in the military to quell the violence. He has said the government would provide financial aid to Christian families whose homes were destroyed by mobs.

The Baptist Press states, “Hindu extremists have burned not only houses and churches, but schools and orphanages.

“Hindu militants have continued to make threats in Orissa. Praveen Togadia, leader of the VHP, requested the establishment of a commission to investigate Christian missionary activity in the state and to enforce anti-conversion laws. Hindu groups in Orissa, where many tribal and lower-caste Hindus have decided to follow Christ, often accuse Christians of bribing or tricking poor Hindus into converting to Christianity. There have been several recent reports of Hindus seeking to coerce Christians to “reconvert” to Hinduism in order to return to their homes.

“Orissa has been plagued by anti-Christian violence in the past. Extremists burned hundreds of churches and homes in December. In 1999, militants burned alive Australian Baptist missionary Graham Staines and his two young sons.”

James Varghese is a reporter for the “V” TV news in Gokak, Karnataka state, India, and is freelance journalist working for ANS.
