GORI, Georgia, Aug 9 (Reuters) - Russia said it had driven Georgian forces from the capital of South Ossetia on Saturday as part of an operation to force Georgia to accept peace in its breakaway region."Tactical groups have fully liberated Tskhinvali from the Georgian military and have started pushing Georgian units beyond the zone of peacekeepers responsibility," Tass quoted Ground Forces commander Vladimir Boldyrev as saying.

Just because Clinton and his EU brethren were wrong about Kosovo, does not make the Russians right about Ossetia. The Russians are clearly opportunists.
1st of all, to understand this war, you need to have a firm understanding of how Soviet(and, yes, Georgian...former Soviets, right?) propaganda works. You can’t rely on given numbers of kill, downs, civi strikes, etc. That’s naive on an scale that would have Obama’s eyebrows lift. In addition, it is regrettable that innocents have died, I don’t consider it important, at least as a motivating factor for US/EU/Western support, though it may suit our(good guy) propaganda. It is not such an important point.
2nd-I read and reread the article you pointed to and no mention of marines being attacked in Georgia, let alone news of them in Georgia. Yes, I know they have had a presence for training as the Marine Forces Reserve pointed out http://www.mfr.usmc.mil/mfrnews/2008/2008.07/Georgia.asp
3rd-This isn’t Darfur. Get a hold of your hysteria so your able to think straight. This is very serious business.
SkyPilot-why do you think Georgia is important? Or don’t you?
Please understand that I’m not trying to tear you down here.
Is this the same good missile defense system they sold Iran and Israel made a mockery of? If so, let’s hope so.
The picture is great.
Your responses to my posts and other posts on this thread are dopey.
If you want less wars then that is exactly what should be done.
No. It's what you do if you want more wars, more ethnic cleansing and more chaos.
BTW eleni, your absurd remark about ethnic Georgians living in So. Ossetia "feel liberated by Russia", remains for all to see.
FreeReign: Most Mexicans living in this country hold Mexican citizenship. Get it? I doubt it.
“According to the map of the region, Georgia is but one country away from Iraq and it borders the NATO member Turkey.”
That still doesn’t change what I said. We have enough problems dealing with Iraq and Afghanistan. The last thing we need is to get involved between Georgia and Russia. Especially since the USA set the precedent in Kosovo/Serbia. Yes I know, it’s all Clinton’s fault for getting us involved in that mess, but Bush has backed it up. Let the rest of Europe assist Georgia.
The way Poland was liberated twice in the 40s from the perils of democracy and Catholicism
Alas, Transformers is no more.
;-)
Putin's Russia on the other hand has an 'ally' south of Georgia, Armenia & energy-rich Azerbaijan, which Moscow is assisting to gain the Shi'ite Bomb ---Iran!
The neo-Soviet Empire has just fired the first shot in their war against the West --- while the West talks and observes. Shades of 1938...............
Somebody has too, at least the Ukraine understand Putin's obvious threat to the entire free world, which is more than can be stated for Western leadership, who should be rushing military aid to stop the Russian horde cold!
Did the Russians fire on our US Marines (at their base)?
YES

Thank you Mr. / Mrs. Soviet Apologist.

You are kidding. Right? It was only the fricking story on Drudge where MILLIONS read it. Plus, our own Defense Dept has confimed it.
3rd-This isnt Darfur
Thanks for the supposed Geography lesson. I understand and Hablo the difference between Africa and Georgia in the former Soviet Union. Did you know that 1 + 1 is 2? Any other bits of wisdom you wish to share?
SkyPilot-why do you think Georgia is important? Or dont you?
What are you talking about?! Am I conversing with a sane individual? You have done everything you can to minimize this crisis, and then you ask me this asinine question?
Marines and Georgians move to the field [Marines near the base bombed by Russia today]
Well, it appears that the border of Georgia is 300 miles from the border of Iraq. That is approximately the distance from California's border to the border of New Mexico. Not saying it is our fight, but it is very close. You can bet your bottom dollar the Pentagon is watching this with keen interest.
Freerepublic rallied support to impeach that idiot. Forcefully removing him from office would have been payback. Clinton probably could not even find Georgia on a map right now.
Well, you want to dispute that Georgia is ally of the US?
This is like shooting fish in a barrel.

Just because they were NEAR the territory of the base does not mean they were bombed. Russia has precision guided munitions as well.
You may be able to see a tree or two, but you sure can’t see the forest.
