Is it time to create a new United States? If so, how?
Townhall ^ | July 10, 2008 | Douglas MacKinnon

Right up front, let me state that this column is for ACADEMIC purposes only. According to friends of mine still with our government, because of my last novel, my home phone and computer became the subject of curiosity for at least two of our three-letter agencies.

The novel was entitled “America’s Last Days” and dealt with a revolution led by a former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and a former Director of the FBI. Both men felt that the United States of their childhoods, of traditional values, and of true sovereignty, was in a death-spiral from which it would never recover. They felt, that as patriots, it was their duty to try and save at least part of the nation.

Over the course of the last year and a half, I’ve gotten over one-thousand emails from readers. Just in the last two months, I received emails from five war-fighters in Iraq who thanked me for writing a novel that held dear the ideals for which they were fighting in Iraq. Ideals that they felt, were waning in their very own country.

Of all the feedback I have gotten regarding the novel, none is more meaningful, sad, or telling, than those five emails. Are we losing the liberty and traditional values that these heroic soldiers are fighting for overseas?

Putting that rhetorical question aside, I’d like to stress again that this column is merely meant to create discussion. Nothing about it should be taken literally by those with the power to tap my phones or read my emails. Better to direct such resources toward the dictators and terrorists who continue to target our nation.

So, with that caveat established, let’s imagine a United States of the very near future.

A United States where:

• An ultra-liberal candidate for president has the unethical support of almost the top 100 newspapers in the country, the top three television networks, and two of the three top cable networks.

• Nancy Pelosi and other liberals would like to silence the needed and conservative voices of Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Mark Levin, Glenn Beck, Laura Ingraham, and others.

• Some Republicans are morphing into liberal Democrats in order to keep their seats at any cost.

• Border security has become a punch-line for many elected officials on both sides of the aisle.

• God and Christianity are under constant attack from the far-left.

• Liberals -- most especially the Democratic candidate for president -- and our Supreme Court, would like to treat Jihadists as criminals and extend statutory habeas corpus to enemy combatants.

• Large segments of the entertainment community are purposefully and systematically exposing our children to the vilest forms of smut to both make money and to indoctrinate.

• Strict-constructionist judges are an endangered species.

• A number of Republicans are jumping on the “Amnesty-for-illegal-aliens” bandwagon faster than Democrats.

• Lower taxes and fiscal restraint are going the way of the Hula-Hoop, good manners, and an abiding belief in the goodness and mission of the American soldier.

Whoops. I’m sorry. Did I say “the near future?” I meant now.

Accepting that depressing and potentially tragic state of affairs, while calculating the prospect of a committed, far-left president, teaming with a Democrat majority in Congress for at least the coming four years, an obvious question comes to mind. That being, is it time to create a “new” United States? If so, how would you go about establishing a new nation predicated on the beliefs and wisdom of our Founding Fathers?

The shrinking number of conservative Americans who still believe in the promise of our Republic are anxiously awaiting the scenarios to be outlined in this “for academic purposes only” homework assignment.

Sounds like a bunch of movies that have some crazy general or politician trying to take over the country because it isn’t the way he thinks it should be.

Now repealing the 19th Ammendment to the Constitution would probably accomplish what you want.

That genie is out of the bottle. You'd need a total rewrite, now. And how one would write a Constitution that would restrain women as effectively as it restrains men, I have no idea, but you can bet anything not written by women themselves would be inadequate.

Pick any state in the US. In that state alone the original purposes of the Constitution would prevail. No welfare, no social security, no federal payments of any kind. All people who lived in the state would pay only the federal taxes consumed by defense of the country and maybe a 20% premium on top of that for maintenance of the necessary federal institutions. State taxes would be up to the state.

Federal environmental laws would cease. Fair wage laws would cease. Housing, employment, service and access mandates would cease. No minimum wage, no impact studies, no unions. Pick any state. How much industry do you think would want to locate to such an environment? How many jobs would suddenly be available in the one remaining American free zone? It would be instructive to finally find out.

Through reply 31 I agree will most all that has been said. The government of the US does not consider the Declaration of Independance a government document that provides any rights as it was written before the government was formed.

And yet, the right of the people to dissolve their government and form a new government cannot be denied!

It would take brave, bold men to lead and support a return to our natural heritage; which to me is nothing more than the original Constitution and Bill of Rights san all of the perverting amendments.

Rewind to the essence of our freedom. Why scrap the most wonderful achievement of mankind simply because it has been perverted by politicians?

As a caution to any members who would espouse any form of overthrow of the US government on this thread: be careful as to what you say. I fully believe that Free Republic is monitored by by those who are enemies of the ‘True Republic’ and are employed by the false republic.

Today our freedom is lost, but it does not mean that it is lost tomorrow. Today were are controlled by politicians, oligarchs, and the enemies freedom; socialists and fascists.

Free men still breath in this country. As long as they do there is hope. Let me ask each and everyone of you, are you ready to pledge your Life, Fortune, and Sacred Honor to the restoration of the True Republic? Well?

My tagline is my family motto - it translates from gaelic as ‘We are victorius! and we will be. I am not afraid to state what I believe nor am I afraid to do what is necessary. I have lived long enough to see this country stolen by those who wish to destroy it. I have entered my sixth decade and lived a good life. I am still healthy and would not make as good a soldier as I did when I was eighteen, but I can still fight.

I Pray for the day that I can stand up for the True Republic. I ache for it! I would gladly spill every ounce of my blood to return this country to people who truly deserve it.

Everyone forgets (or was NEVER TAUGHT) that the “Boston Tea Party” was over a 1% tax!!

Yes, but the pols have learned since then... That tax was on something that everyone wanted and used... They've learned that they can raise taxes and tell the majority that while they're being taxes, those evil rich are the cause, and with the support of the masses, the taxes on those evil rich will be raised even higher, allowing the taxes to be removed from the "good guys." Eventually.

Another thing is the death of the republican form of government. Since the 17th Amendment, having a popular vote for the senate has removed a major feature of our government. And if the leftists get their way and do away with the electoral college, our government will officially be one of "mob rule." Except when the judges disagree.

I say give the vote only to property owners and count the votes by acreage. one acre = one vote!

It would never pass but its fun to think that fly-over country could really stick it to the liberal cities.

One question:
- Would God bless our actions the way He did our Founding Fathers?

(I think that he would, the trick will be how to know when we have slipped past the tipping point - when do things become so irreversible that we need to start over?)

Consequently, the law of the land is inadequate to restrain abuses that are common to "women," and the men who employ such tactics.

Admittedly, it would take considerable rewriting to get the points across for those who (ab)use the language therein, but who said those reconstructing the country would have to keep the Amendments after number 10 or so?

You mean...veterans like John Kerry and John McCain?

God bless our men and women in the armed forces, but they arent any better at judgments a majority of the time than the average Joe Blow who didn't serve.

And I really wish the conservatives ie Free Republic would get rid of the He-Man Woman-Haters trogs that like to lurk here and post their narcissistic nonsense. The hand that rocks the cradle is the one that rules the world, not those with dangly bits.

I'm old enough to remember when the movie came out and I recall thinking that it could never happen in America.
Quite frankly, things have degenerated so quickly I can now see it happening in my lifetime.

I dare say the greatest evils of our current day came from expansive readings of the First Amendment. Clearly, we can no longer give "free speech" carte blanche' just as we no longer give "bear arms" carte blanche'.
