Al-Qaeda Draws New Recruits Via Internet

Al-Qaeda is using the Internet to recruit vulnerable young people to its terrorist network, according to a programme aired on Saudi Arabian TV late on Tuesday.

Umm Osama, the founder of al-Qaeda's first women-only website, al-Khansa, joined several others on the programme to discuss how they renounced jihadist ideology.

Among those who sought a response to this question was an imam from the Medina mosque, Saleh Ibn Awad al-Mudamsi, and the father of a young al-Qaeda suspect held in an Iraqi prison. Read More

“Russian strategic bombers may soon be deployed at airbases in Cuba, Venezuela and Algeria....”

Considering the number of functioning aircraft in the Russian bomber fleet (40 or so Bear H models and either 14 or 15 of their new Blackjack), the boyz better not get spread too thin.

Dispersal of a bomber fleet has been done before, but putting this number of eggs in that many different baskets only simplifies targeting. Especially if you put the basket (considering Cuba) so close that we wouldn’t even have to refuel to blow the whole operation to he^^.

Somebody’s talking out of his....well, you know.

“ISNA Admits Hamas Ties”

IPT News
July 25, 2008

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “In its latest filing before the federal district court in Dallas on behalf of the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) and its affiliate organization, the North American Islamic Trust (NAIT) in the Hamas-terrorism financing case, the ACLU has made a noteworthy admission.”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “The government is merely claiming that evidence exists that ISNA and NAIT have sufficient ties to Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood – HLF - that justify the groups’ inclusion on a list of un-indicted co-conspirators, which enables prosecutors to more easily enter into evidence information which shows the scope of HLF’s pro-Hamas operations.”

“Muslim man jailed for hate crime”
By KEVIN MARTIN, SUN MEDIA
The Calgary Sun

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Taj approached the group around 10:45 p.m. and asked “who’s Jewish.” Nichola Cordato, then 16, stated “me” and Taj grabbed her and said, “I’m Muslim and hate Jews.”

He then slapped her in the face and pulled her hair before her friends, Jessica Motta, Kayla Hungle and Daniel Ball attempted to intervene.

Hungle attempted to prevent Taj from further attacking Cordato and was punched in the face by him.

Motta then intervened and was punched in the face, pulled to the ground by her hair and kicked in the stomach and ribs.

When Ball tried to stop the assaults, he was thrown onto the C-Train tracks where he fell onto his back and was spat upon by Taj.

During the melee, Taj called Cordato a “Jewish piece of (crap).”

Before sentencing, McCaffrey called evidence of a similar assault a year earlier in which Taj approached a black male at an LRT station and assaulted him.

Keak Khor said Taj swore at him for being Sudanese and African before he and another man attacked him. Cummings agreed with the Crown the previous assault was also motivated by “bias, prejudice or hate.” Since Taj has been in custody on the assault charges since March 14, he was credited with double time for his remand custody, which leaves him another three months to serve.”

Treasury Designates Zimbabwean Parastatals and Companies Supporting the Mugabe Regime

Washington, DC—The U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) today designated seventeen entities, including several Zimbabwean parastatals, and one individual whose support for Robert Mugabe’s regime contributes to the undermining of democratic processes and institutions in Zimbabwe.

“In light of the continued intransigence of the brutal Mugabe regime, the U.S. is imposing further sanctions against this regime and its supporters,” said OFAC Director Adam J. Szubin. “These actions send a clear warning to those who would protect Mugabe and his assets at the expense of the Zimbabwean people.”

Today’s designations include a number of Zimbabwean parastatals and entities that are owned or controlled by the Government of Zimbabwe. Robert Mugabe, his senior officials, and regime cronies have used these entities to illegally siphon revenue and foreign exchange from the Zimbabwean people. Treasury’s designations today include the Minerals Marketing Corporation of Zimbabwe (a.k.a MMCZ), the sole marketing and export agent for all minerals, except gold and silver, mined in Zimbabwe; the Zimbabwe Mining Development Corporation (a.k.a. ZMDC), involved in investment in the mining industry in Zimbabwe, and in planning, coordinating and implementing mining projects on behalf of the Government of Zimbabwe; the Zimbabwe Iron and Steel Company (a.k.a. ZISCO), Zimbabwe’s largest steel works; the Agricultural Development Bank of Zimbabwe (a.k.a Agribank), a commercial bank owned by the Government of Zimbabwe; the Industrial Development Corporation of Zimbabwe Ltd, a state-owned enterprise that owns a large number of companies operating in the industrial sector, including the chemical, clothing and textiles, mineral processing, and motor and transport sectors; the Infrastructure Development Bank of Zimbabwe, a financing entity; Zimre Holdings Limited, an investment and reinsurance entity; ZB Financial Holdings Limited, a holding company for a group of companies involved in commercial and merchant banking; and 4 major subsidiaries of ZB Financial Holdings Limited: ZB Bank Limited (a.k.a Zimbank), ZB Holdings Limited, Intermarket Holdings Limited, and Scotfin Limited.

Also designated today are Thamer Bin Saeed Ahmed Al-Shanfari, an Omani national with close ties to Mugabe and his top officials, as well as his company, Oryx Natural Resources, which Al-Shanfari uses to enable Mugabe and his senior officials to maintain access to, and derive personal benefit from, various mining ventures in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (the “DRC”). OFAC has also designated OSLEG (a.k.a. Operation Sovereign Legitimacy), an enterprise that is a commercial arm of the Zimbabwean army representing its interests in the DRC and elsewhere, and which is controlled by various senior officials in Zimbabwe. The activities of OSLEG and Al-Shanfari’s Oryx Natural Resources, benefiting Robert Mugabe and his regime’s senior officials, have been widely documented by various non-governmental and human rights organizations.

Finally, OFAC is designating the following companies that are owned or controlled by a number of Specially Designated Nationals (”SDNs”): Divine Homes, a property company whose Chairman is SDN David Chapfika, Zimbabwe’s Deputy Minister of Agriculture; COMOIL (Pvt) Ltd., a petroleum importing company, owned by SDN Saviour Kasukuwere, Zimbabwe’s Deputy Minister of Youth Development and Employment Creation; and Famba Safaris, a registered Zimbabwean safari operator, whose Director and major shareholder is SDN Webster Shamu, Mugabe’s Minister of State for Policy Implementation.

As a result of Treasury’s action, any assets of the individual and entities designated today that are within U.S. jurisdiction must be frozen. Additionally, U.S. persons are prohibited from conducting financial or commercial transactions with the individual or entities.

Iranian military convoy rocked by mystery explosion
25 Jul 2008

The explosion took place in the Tehran suburb of Khavarshahar as the military convoy left a munitions' warehouse controlled by the Revolutionary Guards. According to reports received by Western officials, the convoy was taking a consignment of military equipment to Hizbollah, the Shia Muslim militia Iran supports in southern Lebanon, when the explosion occurred.

Senior Revolutionary Guard commanders immediately imposed a news black-out following the explosion, even though it could be heard throughout the capital Tehran, and no details of the incident have so far appeared in the Iranian media. But Western officials yesterday said they had received reports that the explosion took place in Tehran on July 19, and that the Revolutionary Guards had launched an investigation into the causes of the blast.

"This was a massive explosion that was heard throughout Tehran," one official told the Daily Telegraph. "Even though lots of people were killed the Revolutionary Guards are trying to conceal what really happened." Iran is believed to have recently stepped up arms shipments to Hizbollah in preparation for any future armed confrontation with the West over its controversial nuclear enrichment programme.

Shanghai police swoops thwart stadium terrorist plot
2008-07-25

BEIJING -- Shanghai police have halted a group of terrorists who planned to attack a football venue in the Olympic co-host city. "We obtained information that international terrorist organizations were likely to launch an attack against an Olympics venue in the city during the Games," said Cheng Jiulong, Shanghai Public Security Bureau deputy director and head of the Shanghai security office for the Games.

Cheng said police staged raids and nabbed the terrorists. He would not provide further details such as when the terrorists were found, how many suspects were detained and their origins. "According to information we have obtained, the Olympics venue, athletes' apartments and routes leading to the venue are considered safe," he said. "However, the threat of terrorism remains as some international terrorist organizations have threatened to launch attacks against the city.''

4 dead, 20 injured as car of Hamas leader explodes near Gaza City
25 / 07 / 2008

Gaza – Ma'an – Four are dead and twenty injured after the car of a Hamas leader in Gaza exploded west of Gaza City Friday evening.

One of the dead is reported to be Amar Mussubyih, who was wanted by the Israeli army. He was a prominent leader of Hamas' Al-Qassam Brigades in the area west of Gaza City. Also killed were Iyad Al-Hayah, nephew of local Hamas leader Khalil Al-Haya and Nidal Mabiad. All are affiliated to the Al-Qassam Brigades. The fourth death was that of an unidentified little girl.

Ihab Al-Ghussain, spokesperson for the de facto ministry of the interior, said that the reasons behind the explosion are unknown. He affirmed that Gaza police will search for the perpetrators, though he did not rule out the idea that the deaths were the result of "outsourcing" by the Israeli army.

This is the third explosion in Gaza on Friday. Earlier in the day, one Palestinian was killed in the first blast at Ag-Gazira café in the centre of the city. The man dead was assumed to have been the bomber. Shortly after the café bombing there was another explosion outside the house of Dr Marwan Abu Ras, a Hamas member of the Palestinian Legislative Council, also in Gaza City, though no one was injured.

‘JI will mobilise nation against US attack’
Friday, July 25, 2008

LAHORE: Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Qazi Hussain Ahmad has warned the United States (US) against attacking Pakistan saying that if Washington committed “the folly of invading Pakistan”, every Pakistani will fight them.

Talking to reporters after the meeting of JI Executive Council (Majlis-e-Amla) at Mansoorah on Thursday, Qazi said that the government was “playing into the hands of conspirators”, threatening national security.

“The entire nation is being deliberately pushed into frustration,” he said, adding that prices of petrol, electricity, gas and edibles had been increased deliberately. Qazi claimed that the US-led NATO forces were positioned against Pakistan on the Afghan border, and were building underground bunkers. He also warned that Pakistan was being used to fight “a war against Islam and Muslims”. He said that the JI would mobilise Pakistanis against the American designs, and would welcome all the forces joining that cause. He said that leaderships of Iran and China would also be consulted in this regard.

from your links in post no. 894:

Quote - Snippet:

To prepare for the Olympic soccer events, police have left no stone unturned in the crackdown on security.

Shanghai Stadium has been closed for security checks since July 20, with both police and armed police conducting round-the-clock patrols.

Safety checks at key locations, such as Shanghai Stadium and the Xujiahui commercial center, would be intense, Cheng said.

He also said police would use special methods to prevent congestion at the entrances to Shanghai Stadium, which is expected to receive about 52,000 spectators for each match.

“Spectators with bags will be guided to special safety check points,’’ he said. “This will improve the flow of people entering the stadium.’’
