Russian military “considering stationing bombers on Cuba”
Jul 21, 2008
Moscow - The Russian military is considering deploying long- range bombers to Cuba to counter the perceived threat of the US missile defence shield planned to be based in the Czech Republic and Poland, according to Russian media reports Monday.
‘At the moment, there are just thoughts - but that doesn’t mean there isn’t something concrete behind it,’ an unidentified officer was quoted Monday as telling Izvestiya newspaper.
He said the aircraft under consideration were Tu-160 and Tu-95 MC bombers. Russia gave up in 2001 a base in Lourdes, Cuba, which had been set up during the Soviet era.
The former commander of this base, Lieutenant-General Mikhail Oparin, was quoted as welcoming the idea. ‘Russia’s air fleet must work towards a presence in every corner of the world,’ he told Interfax news agency. The US, after all, had bases worldwide.
‘An extended radius of action for our air force could be a response to the one-sided action of the USA in setting up a strategic system on Russia’s borders,’ he added.
The newspaper said that from a technical point of view there would be no problem basing Russian bombers on Cuba for a limited period. However, Moscow’s view on doing this was unclear.
Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, while he was still president, had threatened ‘reprisal measures’ if the US went ahead with basing its missile defence shield in Poland and the Czech Republic. He warned that Russia was able to target central Europe with its own missiles.
Russia views the planned deployment of ten US missiles in Poland and a radar facility the Czech Republic as a threat. However, the presence of Russian bombers on Cuba would provoke an international conflict, the Izvestiya report said.
Just 90 kilometres separated Cuba from the US coast, and the US had ‘eyes and ears’ on Cuba with its Guantanamo base.
In 1962 the Cuba crisis saw the US and Soviet Union in a dramatic face-off before Moscow abandoned plans to built missiles bases there.
Well, I don’t much like that idea.
God help us if Obama is elected.

Coalition, Iraqi Forces Kill Six, Detain 17
American Forces Press Service
WASHINGTON, July 21, 2008 Coalition and Iraqi forces killed six enemy fighters and detained 17 suspected terrorists during recent operations in Iraq, military officials said.
Today in Baghdad and Mosul, Coalition forces captured 10 suspected terrorists during separate operations..
U.S. troops in Mosul detained an alleged al-Qaida leader and two other suspects. The suspected leader is believed to be a senior advisor to a terrorist network there, and is believed to conspire with other terrorist leaders to conduct attacks and impose extremist ideals on the citizens there, officials said.
Coalition forces detained six suspected terrorists in Baghdad. The individuals allegedly worked with an extremist group in support of al-Qaidas propaganda network, officials said.
In operations yesterday:
— U.S. and Iraqi forces killed six Iranian-backed special groups members and detained two suspected members during operations in Baghdad. Iraqi forces captured the individuals in Sadr City before moving to a location suspected of housing weapons in the New Baghdad district. The Iraqi troops came under attack, but killed two enemy fighters immediately. They came under attack a second time, receiving gunfire from a nearby building. Coalition aircraft arrived and fired missiles, causing much damage to the building, but the insurgents maintained their attack. Iraqis forces eventually killed four more insurgents, officials said.
— Coalition forces arrested one individual for his alleged association with the Hezbolla Brigade, which officials said is an offshoot of Iranian-trained special groups. The suspect is believed to be a propaganda expert responsible for uploading to the Internet videos and images from insurgent attacks on coalition forces, officials said.
— Iraqi soldiers discovered a weapons cache in Sadr City during a security patrol. They found 15 rocket-propelled grenades with four chargers, a mortar tube with base, a semi-automatic machine gun and more than 300 machine-gun rounds, officials said. Throughout the past 60 days in Sadr City, Iraq forces have confiscated more than 230 weapons and munitions caches, including more than 1,000 various artillery rounds and rockets as well as 280 homemade bombs and bomb-making materials, officials said.
— U.S. troops and Iraqi police found six explosive devices specifically designed to pierce armor-hulled vehicles, four rocket-propelled grenades, an artillery round and a homemade bomb in New Baghdad.
In operations July 19:
— U.S. soldiers detained one known and two suspected terrorists during operations in Baghdads Rashid district.
— Coalition forces captured two men in Baghdad suspected of associating with a bombing cell in northern Baghdad.
— U.S. troops and Iraqi police discovered a rocket, a block of bulk explosives and numerous amounts of bomb-making materials during operations in Baghdad.

“Hezbollah Brigades propaganda specialist captured in Baghdad”
By BILL ROGGIO
July 21, 2008 9:16 AM
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Coalition special forces teams, likely the terrorist hunter-killer teams of Task Force 88, have captured a Hezbollah Brigades propaganda specialist during a raid in New Baghdad.
The propaganda specialist was positively identified by his wife after the raid, and he later admitted to his role in seeding websites with attack videos.
“The man uploads web sites with imagery and video taken from attacks on Iraqi Security and Coalition forces,” Multinational Forces Iraq reported in a press release. “Reports indicate this is part of a propaganda effort in order to earn money and support from their Iranian financiers.”
Little information is publicly available on the Hezbollah Brigades, or the Kata’ib Hezbollah. Multinational Forces Iraq indicates the group receives support from Iran and is an offshoot of Iranian-trained Special Groups.”
The logo used by the Hezbollah Brigades is nearly an exact match of the one used by Lebanese Hezbollah, which is directly supported by Iran.”

Humanizing al Qaeda, Demonizing the Bush Team
WSJ ^ | July 22, 2008 | WILLIAM MCGURN
Posted on July 22, 2008 1:39:16 AM PDT by ricks_place
David Addington and Omar Khadr are two names that will forever be linked to the war on terror.
Mr. Addington is chief of staff to Vice President Richard Cheney and a former colleague of mine. He’s the son of a West Point man who earned a bronze star in World War II and went on to become a general. Before coming to the White House, David put in stints at the CIA, at a congressional intelligence committee, and at the Pentagon — all giving him an expertise on intelligence and national security issues only a handful of others can match.
Then there’s Mr. Khadr. He is the son of a man who helped found and finance al Qaeda, and who died in a 2003 gun battle with Pakistani troops near the Afghan border.
So close were the family ties that the Khadrs lived for a while in the bin Laden family compound in Jalalabad, Afghanistan; and when Mr. Khadr’s sister was married, bin Laden was an honored guest. Mr. Khadr himself went through weapons training at an al Qaeda training camp, and was captured in 2002 after a battle in which he is alleged to have killed a Special Forces medic. Ultimately he was brought to Guantanamo, where he awaits trial before a military commission for war crimes.
Guess who gets the sympathy in the press?
...
While the operative for al Qaeda is humanized, the counsel for the vice president is demonized. Such is the temper of the times that Rep. William Delahunt (D., Mass.) felt free to joke during recent hearings that he was sure al Qaeda was watching — and was “glad they finally have the chance to see you.”

French nuclear firm Areva has found a uranium leak at a factory in southeastern France, but there is no danger to the environment, the French Nuclear Safety Authority (ASN) said on Friday.
The news came a day after the government ordered safety tests at all the country’s 19 nuclear power plants following another leak at an Areva facility earlier this month.
However, Energy and Environment Minister Jean-Louis Borloo moved to reassure the public over the latest incident.
“We mustn’t over-exaggerate,” he told reporters, saying there were 115 such “little anomalies” in France’s nuclear industry each year. “This is something which poses no environmental or health risk,” he said.
