Al-Qaeda Draws New Recruits Via Internet

Al-Qaeda is using the Internet to recruit vulnerable young people to its terrorist network, according to a programme aired on Saudi Arabian TV late on Tuesday.

Umm Osama, the founder of al-Qaeda's first women-only website, al-Khansa, joined several others on the programme to discuss how they renounced jihadist ideology.

Among those who sought a response to this question was an imam from the Medina mosque, Saleh Ibn Awad al-Mudamsi, and the father of a young al-Qaeda suspect held in an Iraqi prison. Read More

ISFs, ISOFs detain seven suspected Special Groups criminals in two separate operations in Amarah

Multi-National Corps – Iraq PAO

BAGHDAD – Iraqi Security Forces and Iraqi Special Operations Forces captured seven suspected Special Groups criminals in Amarah over the past week in two different operations.

In one operation, the Baghdad National Emergency Response Unit simultaneously entered three houses, capturing five suspected Special Groups criminals. The Ministry of Interior had issued warrants for the arrest of the suspects accused of financing other Special Groups members and carrying out attacks in Amarah three months ago.

“This operation continues to support the GOI’s effort to disrupt and neutralize criminal leadership that remained in the area after successful ISF operations in Amarah,” said LTC. Neil Harper, a Multi-National Corps – Iraq spokesperson.

During a separate operation, ISOF captured two individuals suspected of being Iranian surrogates who had warrants for their arrest. One of the individuals is believed to have killed an ISOF soldier by running him over with a car and then shooting him.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
RELEASE No. 20080705-01
July 5, 2008

ISOF capture three suspected terrorists, one SG criminal in operations around central Iraq
Multi-National Corps – Iraq

BALAD, Iraq – Iraqi Special Operations Forces captured three suspected terrorists and one Special Groups criminal around central Iraq, July 3.

In Baghdad, ISOF captured two suspected terrorists, accused of improvised explosive device attacks against Iraqi and Coalition forces. One of the suspected terrorists is an al-Qaeda in Iraq deputy, accused of two attacks against Coalition forces in May 2008. An additional suspect was detained during the operation.

In another operation in Baghdad, ISOF captured a mid-level Special Groups criminal leader believed to be in charge of approximately 250 criminals. The suspect is believed to be responsible for IED and indirect fire attacks against Iraqi and Coalition forces, specifically on Feb. 5 and Feb. 16, 2008.

An AQI leader, based in Anbar province, was captured by ISOF in northwest Baghdad. He is suspected of conducting IED attacks against Iraqi Security and Coalition forces in Karmah, and abducting and holding individuals for ransom to raise funds for terrorist activities.

He is a terrorist specializing in assassinations, kidnappings and IEDs. While processing him for detainment, authorities found a note with names of local Iraqis’ believed to be targeted due to their affiliations with Coalition forces.

“The Government of Iraq and Iraqi Special Operations Forces are determined to pursue all criminals and illegally armed groups no matter where they hide, and provide a secure and stable environment for the people of Iraq,” said Col. Bill Buckner, a spokesman for Multi-National Corps – Iraq.

SNIPPET - QUOTE:

Q Last question on Iraq. What is your evaluation about where Iraq is now? Do you think now if the U.S. can afford to withdraw more troops from Iraq, or will you leave that decision to the next administration? What is your assessment on war on terror in general, during your two terms?

THE PRESIDENT: Well, thank you. Let me make sure I get — this is the old three-part question and I’m about to be 62 years old, so — (laughter.) By the way, I will be celebrating my birthday on Japanese soil; that’s interesting.

Q Congratulations.

THE PRESIDENT: Yes, come to the party. It’s not going to be much of a party; it’s only 62.

Let’s see, Iraq and troops. Okay. First of all, there was — the people have — okay, you got to have benchmarks. I think there was 15 benchmarks — 18 benchmarks. And one way to evaluate progress is to measure what’s actually happened to what was expected, and the progress is undeniable. What happened was security was such that the politics and the economics could move forward. And for a period of time, that was not the case. That’s why we sent more troops in. The combat brigades of the surge will finally come home. The last one will be home in July. So we are in a policy of return on success.

I will listen to General Petraeus when he returns in September as to whether or not we can achieve our objective with fewer troops. That’s up to our commanders. In other words, I’m not going to run a poll during the political season, or any time, to determine what’s the best policy. The policy is determined by the considered judgment of our commanders. And my hope is the next President will have that same standard. That’s going to be up to that person to make the right judgments.

In terms of the war on terror, step one is to recognize we’re at war. Some in our country don’t believe we’re at war. If you don’t believe we’re at war, that this is a simple law enforcement matter, then what you do is you wait until something happens and then react. You know, law enforcement is there is an action, there’s a crime, and then there — law enforcement acts.

In war, what you do is you prevent the enemy from hitting in the first place. That’s why Iraq and Afghanistan are very important theaters in the war on terror. People — some think these are separate wars. It’s the same war — against ideologues who murder the innocent to achieve their political objectives. These are just different fronts in the same war.

And, you know, I am not surprised that a lethal enemy pushes back through the use of their indiscriminate violence to stop the advance of free societies, because this is an ideological war. When they see freedom on the march, it frightens them and it worries them, to the point where they kill innocent people to try to shake the will of the people in that country, and to shake the will of those trying to help them.

And so, one, we’ve taken on the enemy. And two, we’ve had good success against al Qaeda. The first and second person is still alive, but the number three person in al Qaeda has had a dangerous existence — Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, al-Libi, a series of leaders. And we are pressuring them today and we’ll keep pressuring them. And my hope is whoever the next President understands this is a war and that we can’t relax, and that there’s an enemy that wants to do free people harm, and that we have an obligation as free societies to keep the pressure, not only for our own security, but for the security of others.

This is back to this man’s question down here about, why should we care about Afghanistan. The answer is, is because safe haven is a risk. But there’s also another answer. That’s one of the great lessons of our relationship. You know, I marvel at the fact, and I talk about it a lot to the American people of the irony about Prime Minister Koizumi and my relationship. It’s a great testament to our respective countries and the transformative power of liberty that my dad fought the Japanese, and his son sits at the peace table with the Japanese leaders in a spirit of respect and friendship and common values.

Anyway, thank you. Enjoyed it.

Q Thank you very much.

THE PRESIDENT: Very good questions.

Q Thank you very much, sir.

Combined Task Force 152 (link) is on heightened alert in the Gulf monitoring movements of vessels in and out of the Strait of Hormuz. Security officials fear an Al Qaeda attack is imminent.
Iran's military chiefs warned on Saturday that the Islamic republic would shut down the Strait of Hormuz vital for oil exports and use "blitzkrieg tactics" in the Gulf if it came under attack. "All the countries should know that if Iran's interests in the region are ignored, it is natural that we will not allow others to use it (the strait)," said army chief General Hassan Firouzabadi, quoted by the Fars news agency.

STEPPING BACK IN TIME... regarding the Strait of Homuz:

http://www.defenselink.mil/releases/release.aspx?releaseid=11727

IMMEDIATE RELEASE No. 168-08
February 29, 2008
“Charges Referred Against Detainee al Darbi”

SNIPPET: “The Defense Department announced today that charges have been referred against Guantanamo detainee Ahmed Mohammed Ahmed Haza al Darbi of Saudi Arabia.

The accused, al Darbi, is the brother-in-law of the Flight 77 hijacker al Mihdhar. Flight 77 is the plane that hit the Pentagon on Sept. 11. The two charges are: Conspiring with others to attack civilians, commit murder in violation of the law of war, destroy property in violation of the law of war, hazard a vessel and commit terrorism; and providing material support to terrorism. Al Darbi was allegedly involved in planning and procuring equipment for attacks on vessels in the Strait of Hormuz and off the coast of Yemen. The charges authorize a maximum sentence of confinement for life.

It is alleged that al Darbi traveled to Jalalabad and met with Usama bin Laden, trained at al Qaeda’s Jihad Wahl training camp and later served as a weapons instructor at another al Qaeda training camp. From 2001 through 2002, it is also alleged that al Darbi moved money from al Qaeda into financial institutions for expenses related to a plot to attack a vessel in the Strait of Hormuz or off the coast of Yemen.

The charge sheet further alleges that al Darbi joined in preparations for an al Qaeda terrorist operation by traveling to several countries to purchase a GPS device, a boat, and other equipment in late 2000 or early 2001. The boat, named “Adnan” would be loaded with explosives for future terrorist operations. The accused ultimately registered the boat in his name as the “al Rahal” under the Sao Tome flag and purchased a smaller boat to instruct Yemenis how to swim and pilot the boat. He is also alleged, in the spring of 2002, to have departed the United Arab Emirates on board the “al Rahal” destined for Yemen, diverted the boat to Somalia due to concerns with his own passport and to have discussed plans by satellite phone with high level al Qaeda operatives.”

“Presenter: U.S. Naval Forces Command and U.S. 5th Fleet Vice Adm. Kevin Cosgriff January 07, 2008

DoD News Briefing with Vice Adm. Cosgriff at the Pentagon, Arlington, Va.”

SNIPPET: “With respect to the encounter yesterday morning local time in the Strait of Hormuz, I think the facts are known to many of you. USS Port Royal, USS Hopper, USS Ingraham were in bound the Gulf via the Strait of Hormuz routine transit.

In the early hours of the morning, daylight hours of the morning, they were encountered by five total small high-speed craft that we assessed to belong the Iranian Revolutionary Guard navy. The five boats approached the formation on the formation’s starboard bow in international waters slightly inside the gulf from the apex of the strait, broke into two groups, one to one side of the formation, one to the other. The groups maneuvered aggressively in the direction of the U.S. ships. They were called on radio; they were — ships’ whistles were sounded, those sorts of things, to draw attention to the fact that their maneuvers were a cause of concern to the commanding officers.

At one point during this encounter, we received a radio — the ships received a radio call that was threatening in nature, to the effect that they were closing our ships and that the ships might — the ships would explode, the U.S. ships would explode. Subsequently, two of these boats were observed dropping objects in the water, generally in the path of the final ship in the formation, the USS Ingraham. These objects were white box-like objects that floated, and obviously the ship passed by them safely.

The encounter continued, with the boats maneuvering close to stern and after — under 30 minutes total, they returned in the direction from whence they came, to the north, back towards Iranian territorial waters.

So I would reiterate it was a transit passage in international waters incidental to a routine inbound transit of the Strait of Hormuz. The U.S. ships were clearly marked, at daylight, decent visibility. The behavior of the Iranian ships was, in my estimation, unnecessary, without due regard for safety of navigation and unduly provocative in the sense of the aggregate of their maneuvers, the radio call and the dropping of objects in the water.

I’d like to report that the training of our ships as they came in was more than satisfactory. They stepped through the procedures carefully, with good discipline, with due regard for all the factors, while at the same time taking the reasonable precautions to place their ships in conditions of readiness consistent with the environment in which they were entering. So I was very proud of their performance and the training they received.”

Iranian Oppositionist Attacks Ahmadinejad’s Political Use Of Hidden Imam

In an article, Rasoul Montajb Nia, senior official in Iran’s Etemad-e Mali opposition party, attacked Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s political use of his belief in the return of the Hidden Imam and his “false statements,” forbidden by the Shi’a, regarding the Hidden Imam’s expected appearance in two years’ time.

An Iranian court subsequently accused director of the Etemad-e Mali newspaper, Mohammad Javad HaqShenas, of spreading lies and confusing public opinion.

Two alleged supervisors arrested at Agriprocessors in Postville
Public’s assistance sought in locating third defendant

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Two alleged supervisors at the Agriprocessors Inc. plant in Postville, Iowa, were arrested today on various criminal immigration and fraudulent identity charges. U.S. Attorney Matt M. Dummermuth, Northern District of Iowa, made the announcement; U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is conducting the investigation.

Juan Carlos Guerrero-Espinoza, 35, and Martin De La Rosa-Loera, 43, were arrested this morning at the Agriprocessors Inc. plant. Both Guerrero-Espinoza and De La Rosa-Loera were charged with aiding and abetting the possession and use of fraudulent identity documents, and encouraging aliens to illegally reside in the United States. Guerrero-Espinoza was also charged with aiding and abetting aggravated identity theft. The charges are contained in Complaints filed today in U.S. District Court in Cedar Rapids.

Guerrero-Espinoza ‘s Complaint alleges he is a supervisor of four departments at Agriprocessors in Postville, including the Beef Kill department. The Complaint alleges that, a few days before the May 12, 2008, execution of a search warrant at Agriprocessors, Guerrero-Espinoza told a group of employees they needed new IDs and Social Security numbers to continue working at the company, and they would need to provide Guerrero-Espinoza with a photograph and $200 or $220. Fraudulent resident alien cards were allegedly supplied to Agriprocessors workers. The Complaint also alleges that the May 12 search resulted in seizing dozens of fraudulent permanent alien resident cards from offices within the human resources department at Agriprocessors.

De La Rosa-Loera’s Complaint alleges he is a supervisor of four departments at Agriprocessors in Postville, including the Poultry Kill department. The Complaint alleges that, about 15 days before the May 12, 2008, execution of a search warrant at Agriprocessors, De La Rosa-Loera told some undocumented alien employees they could no longer work at Agriprocessors because their social security numbers were bad, and they needed new documents. De La Rosa-Loera later allegedly told those employees they could return to work using the same names previously used for employment. Guerrero-Espinoza and De La Rosa-Loera are scheduled for initial appearances at 4 p.m. July 3 in federal court in Cedar Rapids.

The public’s assistance is being sought in apprehending Hosam Amara, 43, last known to live in Postville. A federal warrant has been issued for his arrest based on a sealed Complaint. Anyone with information as to Amara’s whereabouts should call ICE at (866) DHS-2-ICE (347-2423).

As with any criminal case, a charge is merely an accusation; a defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Peter Deegan, CJ Williams and Matt Cole, Northern District of Iowa, are prosecuting this case.

SNIPPET: “* JIP Bajaur commander Wali Rehman says American ‘spies’ to be publicly hanged”

Staff Report

KHAR:

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Spies: Rehman said those spying for America would be strictly punished and would be publicly hanged to teach others a lesson.

He said one of the spies arrested following the bombing of a Damadola madrassa in May by the US, had been beheaded. He said the JIP had sentenced him to death under the Islamic laws.

Rehman said the death sentence awarded to Afghan citizen Jan Wali was not a human rights violation as several innocent people had lost their lives because of his espionage. He handed over the body of Jan Wali and custody of his 12-year-old son, kept in JIP’s custody for the past one month, to Wali’s family on the occasion.

Jan Wali’s son Muhammad Tahir told reporters that his father was punished for the sins he had committed and he did not feel sad for his death.”

“Indonesian police say bombs packed with bullets”
by Presi Mandari
Fri Jul 4, 2:09 PM ET

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “JAKARTA (AFP) - Bombs found in a militant safe house in South Sumatra were packed with bullets to inflict maximum carnage, police said Friday as they interrogated 10 suspected Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) cell members.”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Investigators were sifting through mountains of material gathered from the alleged safe house in the South Sumatra provincial capital, including some 20 makeshift bombs, detonators, explosives chemicals and 18 computer hard drives.

They said the cell’s senior bomb-maker was the Singaporean believed to be Mohammed Hassan, alias Abu Hamza, who was the subject of a “red note” from the Singaporean government warning of his alleged terrorist activities.

He was connected to fugitive Malaysian extremist Noordin Mohammad Top, Indonesia’s most wanted man, as well as Kastari, the alleged JI leader in Singapore who escaped from prison there in February and is still at large.

Noordin calls himself leader of Al-Qaeda for the Malay Archipelago and is seen as the head of the most extreme faction of the regional JI network, which aims to create an Islamic caliphate in Southeast Asia.

JI has militant members in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines and southern Thailand, but Noordin is considered the leader most set on attacking Westerners.”

Two alleged supervisors arrested at Agriprocessors in Postville

Finally people are held to be accountable for aiding and abetting the hiring of illegal aliens in this case (not that there is a serious lack of other unscrupulous employers via HR/supervisory staff awaiting at minimum the same type of scrutiny by the feds.....). When we see more companies held to accountability for this type of offense, citizens/taxpayers can begin to feel there is hope those in charge of justice in our nation will show us they are capable of upholding our nation's laws and prosecuting lawbreakers, not rewarding or ignoring them.

The only known suspect in Sacramento's massive railroad trestle fire last year along the American River Parkway was rearrested in the same area of the fire, Sacramento County park rangers reported Friday.

"He didn't say anything. He just smiled a lot," said Ranger Dane Anderson of Jose Eduardo Moran-Marques, who was taken into custody for violating his probation.

Anderson and Ranger Tim McElheney arrested Moran-Marques on Wednesday about a half-mile from the Union Pacific Railroad trestle that was destroyed March 15, 2007, in what investigators said was an arson fire.

The fire destroyed 1,400 feet of the trestle, cutting one of the railroad's main east-west arteries. It moved so quickly that within hours, investigators were describing the blaze as suspicious.

Although Moran-Marques was the only suspect in the deliberately set fire, he was never charged with arson. He pleaded guilty late last year to giving a false name to an agent of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

After serving his time, Moran-Marques was deported back to his native El Salvador. He was last seen by Anderson and McElheney in the area of the fire in May, just a few weeks after being deported. "When we saw him, we ran a check on him. He had no warrants, no holds, no probation, nothing," Anderson said of Moran-Marques.
