Critical Threats: Blank When None
The Hunt for American al Qaeda

The United States is turning up the heat in the hunt for the California boy turned al Qaeda operative, Adam Gadahn, who has been charged with treason and is believed to be hiding in Afghanistan. If caught and convicted, Gadahn could face the death penalty.

The State Department along with the Department of Diplomatic Security announced the beginning of a publicity campaign in Afghanistan urging locals to provide any information on Gadahn's whereabouts, with a reward if the information leads to his capture.

Radio advertisements with information concerning the $1 million reward have already begun airing. Additionally, printed materials including matchbooks, handbills and posters will be distributed throughout the region in the coming weeks in attempts to elicit cooperation from members of the Afghan community. “al-Khaiwani verdict: Six years with hard labor”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Filed under: Yemen — by Jane Novak at 6:17 am on Monday, June 9, 2008

He’s in jail now. This from the same court that finds it legal and even admirable when Yemenis murder Iraqis in Iraq. But writing about the Yemeni civilians suffering during Ali Mohsen’s personal jihad in Sa’ada is punishable by six years in jail. Every journalist in Yemen is much less free now. And so is the world.”

Muslim sect told to return to mainstream Islam
Yahoo News ^ | 6/9/08 | NINIEK KARMINI
Posted on June 9, 2008 11:23:47 AM PDT by Dawnsblood

Members of a moderate Muslim sect were ordered by the government Monday to return to mainstream Islam or face possible imprisonment for insulting the country’s predominant religion.

Critics may see the step as a failure by the government of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to uphold the young democracy’s secular values as it struggles to define its Muslim identity after decades of dictatorship.

The vast majority of Indonesia’s Muslims are moderate, but in recent years an extremist fringe has grown louder. The government, which relies on the support of Islamic parties in Parliament, has been accused of caving in to their demands.

The document signed Monday by two Cabinet ministers and the attorney general “orders all Ahmadiyah followers to stop their activities” or face up to five years in prison.

Indonesia’s constitution guarantees freedom of religion, but many in the nation of 235 million consider it offensive that the sect does not recognize Muhammad as the last prophet.

“Is it still safe for us in this country?” Ahmadiyah spokesman Syamsir Ali said in an interview with national broadcaster tvOne. “Our houses are being targeted and those who don’t like us feel it is acceptable to spill our blood.”

Ali said he hopes Indonesia doesn’t “turn out to be like governments in the Middle East” where the movement is prohibited.

NEWS RELEASE SUMMARY - June 5, 2008

San Diego, CA - United States Attorney Karen P. Hewitt announced today the unsealing of five criminal complaints charging a total of twelve individuals with federal drug trafficking and firearm violations. The charges stem from an undercover investigation conducted by the San Diego Violent Crimes Task Force - Gang Group into the illegal activities of the Mexican Mafia prison gang and associated Latino street gangs in the San Diego area.

Four of the five complaints charge eleven defendants, including Mexican Mafia member Jose Alberto “Bat” Marquez, with Conspiracy to Distribute Methamphetamine. Marquez, who is currently in federal custody, was indicted in the Southern District of California in 2002 for conspiracies to import and distribute marijuana and cocaine as part of the Arellano-Felix drug trafficking organization; as noted in the 2002 indictment, Marquez acted as an enforcer, bodyguard, and caretaker of stash houses for the Arellano-Felix organization. Muncie, Indiana, Man Sentenced to 121 Months in Cross Burning Case

WASHINGTON - Kyle Milbourn of Muncie, Ind., was sentenced by a federal judge today for a hate crime stemming from a cross burning last year that was directed at a woman and her three biracial children, announced Acting Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division Grace Chung Becker and U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Indiana Timothy Morrison.

Milbourn was convicted by a jury in March 2008, of one count of interfering with the housing rights of another person; one count of conspiring to interfere with civil rights; one count of using fire during the commission of a felony; and one count of tampering with a witness. He was sentenced to 121 months on all four counts combined.

According to testimony at trial, on or about March 6, 2006, Milbourn and another individual, who previously pleaded guilty, built an eight-foot wooden cross, erected it in front of the victims’ home, doused it with gasoline and set it on fire. Milbourn did this with the intent to interfere with the victims’ rights under the Fair Housing Act. In an attempt to thwart the FBI’s investigation into the cross burning, Milbourn, in November 2007, tried to prevent a witness from speaking to FBI agents.

“It is deeply disturbing that, in this day and age, circumstances still require us to prosecute cases that involve burning an eight-foot wooden cross in front of the home of a bi-racial family,” said Acting Assistant Attorney General Becker. “The Justice Department will vigorously prosecute anyone who engages in cross-burning.”

“No one should have to suffer the terror and intimidation of a cross-burning,” said U.S. Attorney Morrison. “Civil rights enforcement remains a top priority of the Department of Justice.”

The case was prosecuted by Trial Attorney Betsy Biffl from the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice and resulted from an investigation conducted by FBI Special Agent Charlie Rownd of the Muncie Field Office.

Pakistani girls are traded to settle feuds
Miami Herald ^ | 6/9/08 | SAEED SHAH
Posted on June 9, 2008 3:45:07 PM PDT by Dawnsblood

It began with an errant dog, and it’s now culminated with the forced betrothal of 15 little girls, some of them as young as 3, as compensation in a case of tribal feuding in a remote part of Pakistan.

It’s thought that around 20 people have died in the bitter quarrel, and the marriage offer of the girls is meant to end the bloodletting.

Under a brutal custom, called Vani, the girls are being traded as settlement of a long-running dispute between two tribes. This case occurred on the border between the southern provinces of Sindh and Baluchistan, but the practice, known as Swara in some areas, isn’t uncommon in rural parts of Pakistan.

‘’The murderer gets away. It is his daughter, his sister, his niece, that pays the price,’’ said Samar Minallah, a human rights activist based in Islamabad. ``The girl has to pay the price for the rest of her life.’’

Vani usually involves the daughters of illiterate and poor people, who don’t have money or other assets to give as compensation. Minallah said that a disturbing feature of such settlements is that they’re often ordered by the rich local landowners who adjudicate the cases. Typically, they’re educated people and even include members of parliament. A law bans the practice, but police and local officials rarely intervene.

In this instance, Noor Ali, whose three daughters are to be given away, said in an interview that he accepted the verdict. His girls, however, had no choice.

‘’I think it is right,’’ said Ali, speaking by telephone from his village in the Jaffarabad area. ``This is our culture.’’

U.S. Official Travels to North Korea for Nuclear Talks
Fox News ^ | Tuesday, June 10, 2008 | Associated Press
Posted on June 10, 2008 2:04:12 AM PDT by BloodOrFreedom

Sung Kim, the U.S. State Department’s top Korea expert, crossed into North Korea via the heavily fortified land border with South Korea, the U.S. Embassy in Seoul said.

Kim was to stay in North Korea for two days to discuss how it can finish several remaining steps in disabling its Yongbyong reactor as well the possibility of blowing up a cooling tower there, according to the State Department and the embassy.

North Korea has promised to provide a complete declaration of its nuclear programs in return for aid and political concessions, but has not yet done so. It handed 18,500 pages of nuclear records to the U.S. in May.

...

Energy-starved North Korea was promised aid equivalent to 1 million tons of heavy fuel oil for taking initial steps toward disarmament. It has requested that half of the aid be provided in heavy fuel oil and the other half in energy-related equipment — mostly steel products for renovating its outdated power plants.

Pastor Dave Welch, executive director of the Houston Area Pastor Council, is just one of those angry over a presentation by two female representatives of the Council on American-Islamic Relations that students at the Friendswood Junior High School were forced to attend two weeks ago.

“The specific details, as we were given by the students, included teachings that Adam, Noah, and Jesus were all prophets like Mohammed; the basic tenets of Islam; the process of how to pray five times a day; again, the pillars of Islam. These were specific, religious instructions,” Welch explains.

Welch says Principal Robin Lowe explained to parents, who initially complained, that the assembly was held to deal with comments some students had made that were insensitive to Arab students. “This was not just cultural issues of the manners and ways of Arab culture. This was Islamic teaching,” says the Houston pastor. “That was the issue that, obviously, raised great concern. This was forced religious instruction and [what we call] Islamic ... ‘indoctrination.’”

Even more egregious, Welch says, is the fact that the principal was allegedly ordered by the superintendent of the school district not to allow the pro-Islam assembly, but did so anyway.”
