ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Internet outages disrupted business and personal usage across a wide swathe of the Middle East on Wednesday after two undersea cables in the Mediterranean were damaged, government officials and Internet service providers said.
In Cairo, the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology said the cut of the international communications cables Flag and Seamewe 4 had led to a partial disruption of Internet services and other telecommunications across much of Egypt.
Emergency teams were quickly trying to find alternative routes, including satellite connections, to end the disruptions, Minister Tariq Kamel said.
A telecommunications expert at the Egyptian communications ministry, Rafaat Hindy, cautioned that “solving this could take days.”
TeleGeography, a U.S. research group that tracks submarine cables around the world, said the severed lines account for 75 percent of the capacity connecting Egypt and other Middle Eastern countries to Europe.
It would take “a few days up to one week before submarine cable operators deploy ships to bring the cables up and fix the fault,” said Eric Schoonover, senior research analyst at TeleGeography.
It was not clear what caused the damage to the cable.”

OAXACA, Mexico - Gunmen shot dead a local police chief and three other people on Wednesday in Oaxaca, a politically tense southern Mexican city where leftists held a months-long siege in 2006.
Oaxaca state Gov. Ulises Ruiz said the murders were linked to drug smuggling cartels whose violent turf wars killed more than 2,500 people across Mexico last year.
Local police chief Alejandro Barrita was in charge of police units guarding banks and businesses on Oaxaca, a pretty colonial city still scarred by the protests of 2006.
Barrita was killed while he was exercising in a city park. The gunmen also killed his bodyguard and two other people doing exercise in the park, state police director Daniel Camarena told reporters.
Ruiz said the killings were a response to the increased military presence in Oaxaca. President Felipe Calderon has sent 25,000 troops across Mexico to try to control the escalating violence between rival drug gangs.
“This is a result of the fight against organized crime and ... is causing the deaths of our police chiefs,” Ruiz told local radio.
Camarena said he was also investigating other motives.
Mexican rebel group Popular Revolutionary Army, or EPR, bombed natural gas and oil pipelines in 2007 to demand the release of two leftist activists it says were seized by the government in May in Oaxaca.
Oaxaca, a popular stop for European and U.S. tourists, in 2006 faced a violent conflict between state police and protesters calling for Ruiz to resign. (Reporting by Paulina Valencia; Editing by Cynthia Osterman)

Thanks for the heads up, Cindy. How did you know we were going there? We will be at a very secure, gated, and guarded condo in Puerto Vallarta..........and will not be leaving the immediate area. Part business trip and part Margarita trip. We’ve been there every year and have always felt safe at this location. There is NO way we would go to one of the border towns.

It all happened quickly.
About five and half hours into the flight, Robson awoke to the sound of many footsteps hurrying to the front of the plane. It was about 2 a.m. Monday, Toronto time.
“Look, we’ve got a really serious medical emergency on board,” a concerned flight attendant told him as he walked to the front of the plane and was told to use the facilities at the back of the plane.
There was a call for a medical person from among the passengers. “We have a medical emergency, the flight services director called out on the plane,” recalled Robson, a global training adviser for Imperial, who was in sitting in the centre row of business class about 4 metres from the co-pilot as he was restrained by the crew on the floor outside the galley.
“He was clearly someone not in control of his senses,” said Robson.
The captain came on and said the flight was being diverted to Shannon Airport.
“I saw the crew all around a man on the floor outside the galley (just behind the cockpit). It appeared they were restraining him,” said Robson. “He was looking around. He was swearing and yelling.”
Others on board said they heard the co-pilot say “he wanted to talk to God ... that the plane was low on fuel,” recalled Robson.
Shortly after the plane landed, Robson recalled, “The aisles were full of officials.”
