Dr. James Dobson: Fred Thompson 'Not a Christian'

"Everyone knows he’s conservative and has come out strongly for the things that the pro-family movement stands for,” Dobson – considered the most politically powerful evangelical figure in the U.S. – said in a phone call to Dan Gilgoff, senior editor at U.S. News & World Report.

"[But] I don’t think he’s a Christian. At least that’s my impression.”

Thompson’s spokesman Mark Corallo took issue with the statement.

"Thompson is indeed a Christian,” he said. "He was baptized into the Church of Christ.”

If you are a true Christian, you will act like Jesus, being a *little Christ*.

Too bad that's not what Jesus supposedly said...

I seem to recall the only requirement was to believe in him, but I guess you know better....shrug

It looks like good can come from even the vilest of sinners...

I don't even know where to start....you missed the point so badly....

BAsically you've quoted some scripture tomake the point I was making...

It's a given that he can find a place for Newt...the irony being that he questions Fred!! Get it?..:)

Is it possible that Hagel is kissing up to the liberal media to become their new darling so we'll all forget about McCain's kiss ups to them.

Pretty sly...pretty sly....it'll be interesting to see if that plays out....

Just incredible if true!

Personally I think McCain could be a genuine Manchurian candidate....LOL

Stokholm on steriods man!...

And for me he really needs to answer why he is so personally heavily invested in communist Vietnam....along with John F'in Kerry....is it that lucrative that he'd sell his soul to the commie devils?!?!...LOL

You can not seriously believe that Dr. Dobson is judging CHARACTER in this case.... he is simply aplying HIS definition of Christian and stating that based on HIS definition of Christian (which many of us happen to share) that Mr. Fred Thompson does not appear to be one.. that is IT.... Do not make it more than what it is... take it or leave it... again I say Mr. Thompson has NO reason to be offended.. IF Mr. Thompson believes that HE is in fact a Christian, it appears that he and Mr. Dobson have different definitions of what it means to be a Christina,.., in this case I would like to hear what Mr. Thompsons definition of a Christian is since he seems to be "offended" that Dr. Dobson said that he does not appear to be one..... IF an atheist were to proclaim that DAVID OSBORNE IS NOT AN ATHEIST.. I would not be offended because it would be a simple statement of fact.. however if I WAS an atheist I would attempt to clarify with that individual our differing opinions of what it means to be an atheist..

MY 2cents worth clarified, and I will leave this one alone..

We can NOT seriously believe that Dr. Dobson is "judging" Mr. Thompson's CHARACTER in this case....

Dr. Dobson IS simply aplying his own definition of Christian and stating that based on HIS definition of Christian (which many of us happen to share) that Mr. Fred Thompson does not appear to be one..

that is IT....

Do not make it more than what it is...

take it or leave it...

again I say that Mr. Thompson has NO reason to be offended..

IF Mr. Thompson believes that HE is in fact a Christian, it appears that he and Dr. Dobson have different definitions of what it means to be a Christian,..,

IF this is in FACT the case,... which I believe it is...

I would like to hear what Mr. Thompsons definition of being a Christian is since he seems to be "offended" that Dr. Dobson (a well known Christian) said that he does not appear to be one.....

IF a well known atheist were to proclaim that DAVID OSBORNE IS NOT AN ATHEIST.. I would not be offended... because I would accept it as a simple statement of fact..

however if I WAS an atheist I would attempt to clarify with THE PUBLIC.. as well as that individual our differing opinions of what it means to be an atheist..

All your protestations would be slightly believable except for all those postings you have pushing Duncan Hunter. So it really boils down NOT to some look at someone's moral character but just to political competition. You wanted to promote your guy (which is okay) by not so subtlely tearing down another guy (not so okay).

That's not a fair characterization.. because if you read some of my posting I SUPPORT both Duncan Hunter AND Fred Thompson... I happen to believe that Fred Thompson would be an excellent choice for VP..... I look forward to Fred Thompson's response to this "Christian" question, which as of yet I have not seen.. if you have please point me to it.. thanks..

How generous of you. You allow him to be the Veep.

I look forward to Fred Thompson's response to this "Christian" question, which as of yet I have not seen..

He doesn't have to answer you or anyone else on that. That is his personal thing. It was bad enough when Newt had to humiliate himself by kissing Dobson's ring (or maybe some posterior spot), we don't need a repeat performance by Thompson.

I don't say that to be "generous" I say it because it is my opinion.. Isn't that what we do here?

You can have an opinion but don't not-so-subtly slam one candidate to not-so-subtly boost another. So you want Duncan Hunter? Great. No need to pull the rug from Fred Thompson based on what Sponge Dob supposedly claimed. Even he is backing away from himself.

There sure is a lot of heat & light in this thread!

NIV Matthew 13:24-30
24. Jesus told them another parable: "The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field.
25. But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away.
26. When the wheat sprouted and formed heads, then the weeds also appeared.
27. "The owner's servants came to him and said, `Sir, didn't you sow good seed in your field? Where then did the weeds come from?'
28. "`An enemy did this,' he replied. "The servants asked him, `Do you want us to go and pull them up?'
29. "`No,' he answered, `because while you are pulling the weeds, you may root up the wheat with them.
30. Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it into my barn.'"

NIV Matthew 13:36-44
36. Then he left the crowd and went into the house. His disciples came to him and said, "Explain to us the parable of the weeds in the field."
37. He answered, "The one who sowed the good seed is the Son of Man.
38. The field is the world, and the good seed stands for the sons of the kingdom. The weeds are the sons of the evil one,
39. and the enemy who sows them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the age, and the harvesters are angels.
40. "As the weeds are pulled up and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of the age.
41. The Son of Man will send out his angels, and they will weed out of his kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil.
42. They will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
43. Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, let him hear.

NIV Luke 9:52-56
52. And he sent messengers on ahead, who went into a Samaritan village to get things ready for him;
53. but the people there did not welcome him, because he was heading for Jerusalem.
54. When the disciples James and John saw this, they asked, "Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them ?"
55. But Jesus turned and rebuked them,
56. and they went to another village.

I know. My point is that the article is skewed, not your interpretation.

Dobson doesn't know if Fred Thompson is a Christian or not and it is not his place to say. Only God and Fred know if he is a Christian.

Dobson clarified what he meant by "Christian" and it's not what you and many are hyperventilating over.

Please tell me where I "not-so-subtly slam one candidate to not-so-subtly boost another."

I did no such thing..... I am not over reacting to this article, athough it appears that many folks ARE.... by slamming Dr. Dobson for expressing an opinion...to "boost" Fred Thompson.. which is what YOU (interestingly enough) are acusing ME of doing ... Fred Thompson is perfectly capable of speaking for himself....

I POSTED the article (which I thought was interesting), I did not write it, and how is ANYONE "pulling the rug from Fred Thompson".... THAT comment is seriously overreacting IMHO...

the way Fred Thompson responds to this "hoopla"..... if he decides to respond at all.... says more about his character than what Dr. Dobson says or anyone else says for that matter..
