Dr. James Dobson: Fred Thompson 'Not a Christian'

"Everyone knows he’s conservative and has come out strongly for the things that the pro-family movement stands for,” Dobson – considered the most politically powerful evangelical figure in the U.S. – said in a phone call to Dan Gilgoff, senior editor at U.S. News & World Report.

"[But] I don’t think he’s a Christian. At least that’s my impression.”

Thompson’s spokesman Mark Corallo took issue with the statement.

"Thompson is indeed a Christian,” he said. "He was baptized into the Church of Christ.”

Your post reminds me of THESE verses...

Luke 18:7-8
 7.  And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off?
 8.  I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?"

And yours reminds me of Zechariah 14--especially verse 9.

Thanks for bringing that topic to my attention, as it reminded me to resume study after neglecting it for a few days. My father was Catholic (three generations of that on my dad's side), but my mother's side was Protestant. With the culture of my former heritage being what it was, upbringing and adulthood with regular attendance in a Southern Baptist churches followed.

But questions lingered for several decades, and recent trends (the Mel thing, Buchanan and others like him being more frequently published, antisemitism on the rise around the world, and more frequent, public comments from people against Judaism) got my attention. After a few years' study of the history of Christianity (starting with Roman history), I left the religion of most of my life behind and began study from a more concrete and absolute monotheism. I'm not Jewish (having not converted due to circumstances--remote location for one thing), but I follow Judaism as a new, non-Jewish student.

Now I'm much more sure of my beliefs. Those lingering questions have been answered and are behind me.

Luke 22:38 -- "And they said, Lord, behold, here [are] two swords. And he said unto them, It is enough."

Those are Jesus' words. Curious, eh?

Second Amendment rights are the product of secular law, not Biblical mandate.

That is an ignorant and ill informed question.

I see that, in your puffed up state of self-righteousness, your sense of irony has been squeezed out. Consider your own question to me.

Do you know Jesus? Or, do you think that His way is too strict, demanding, narrow?

Oh brother. Do you have any idea how perfectly sanctimonious this comment is? I suppose not. Such is the Pecksniffian mindset.

And finally, I'm on the religious right. Does that make you on the non-religious left?

Why of course. It only follows. Unless I agree with you, I am a heathen condemned to hell.

I try to have reasoned and educated debates on these forums.

So that explains your initial foray on whether I hate all religions or only Christians.

But if you like, I can stoop as low and you would like.

Lower than most, I suspect.

Mr "atlaw",

"Why of course. It only follows. Unless I agree with you, I am a heathen condemned to hell."

You don't have to agree with me...I don't matter. You do however have to be born again. Jesus said it, not me. John 3:3 "Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."

You can dislike me and try to berate me as much as you like. It won't change a thing. You're tone though is the one that sounds "self-righteous and puffed up". When a debate gets to the point to where your only reply and response is to call names and try to belittle my faith, it clearly makes a statement as to where we stand. Doesn't it? You said that you think I can go lower than most? Well, if you talk to dogs, you have to bark!

With Reverence and respect to Christ,

I have no idea where you stand on the issues that I mention, nor at this point do I care because you have made your core values very clear to me.

Really? Oh, I get it. You have divined my soul, and found it wanting. Should I kneel before you and beg your forgiveness? After all, you are a "true Christian" and hence the keeper of the true "core values" (whatever the living heck those might be).

The point I was trying to make is that outside of those issues I have mentioned, there isn't really much of a difference between the two parties.

And this is precisely the curse that the religious right has bestowed on both conservatism and the GOP.

To be very honest with you atlaw, I think you are making a very huge mistake by trying to belittle Christians.

The sheer self-congratulatory arrogance of the religious right is summed up in these words. You and your ilk do not speak for Christendom, and your presumption that you do is, frankly, nothing more than juvenile conceit.

I think you would really enjoy reading them and you would probably pick up a few pointers in the fine art of bashing Christians. Learn from the pro's as they say.

Take a pill.

Your selective memory is astonishing. Do you even recall your first snide, pig-ignorant question to me? Had I ever spoken with you prior to that little gratuitous piece of nastiness you bestowed on me? Why, of course not. After all, you've only been on this board since the 11th of this month.

Take a hike, you moron.

My father was Catholic (three generations of that on my dad's side), but my mother's side was Protestant.
With the culture of my former heritage being what it was, upbringing and adulthood with regular attendance in a Southern Baptist churches followed.

Wow!

With a background like that you should be way ahead of a lot of folks in the knowledge of where our Faith has originated from!

NIV Proverbs 4:13
Hold on to instruction, do not let it go; guard it well, for it is your life.

NIV Hebrews 3:6
But Christ is faithful as a son over God's house. And we are his house, if we hold on to our courage and the hope of which we boast.

NIV Hebrews 3:14
We have come to share in Christ if we hold firmly till the end the confidence we had at first.

NIV Hebrews 6:11
We want each of you to show this same diligence to the very end, in order to make your hope sure.

NIV Hebrews 12:3
Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

NIV 1 Timothy 1:20-21
 20.  Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to your care. Turn away from godless chatter and the opposing ideas of what is falsely called knowledge,
 21.  which some have professed and in so doing have wandered from the faith.   Grace be with you.

NIV 2 Timothy 2:11-13
 11.  Here is a trustworthy saying: If we died with him, we will also live with him;
 12.  if we endure, we will also reign with him. If we disown him, he will also disown us;
 13.  if we are faithless, he will remain faithful, for he cannot disown himself.

NIV 2 Peter 2:20-21
 20.  If they have escaped the corruption of the world by knowing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and are again entangled in it and overcome, they are worse off at the end than they were at the beginning.
 21.  It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than to have known it and then to turn their backs on the sacred command that was passed on to them.

NIV 2 John 1:8
Watch out that you do not lose what you have worked for, but that you may be rewarded fully.

NIV Jude 1:21
Keep yourselves in God's love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life.

NIV Revelation 2:25
Only hold on to what you have until I come.

NIV Revelation 3:11
I am coming soon. Hold on to what you have, so that no one will take your crown.

I have great respect fot the man who can "call a spade a spade".... and Dr. Dobson is one of those men...

C'mon.. you're kidding right ... Dobson had pretty much annointed Haggard as the next in line as far as "family Values" and "Defense of Marraige" issues ... yeah Dobson was a GREAT judge of character there

"Take a hike, you moron."

I was waiting on that bit of intelligence. If you think that by asking a question as to whether or not you hate all religions is "Pig-ignorant", you are.

Matthew 10:14 "And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet."

You are but dust off my feet. The word has been given. Your blood is no longer on my hands.

And in return, because you are so obviously an infidel, wandering an immoral desert while hypocritically abusing the name of Christ in service of satan, I will pray for you, though it will do no good. A corrupt and vile soul such as yours can never be cleansed, and one can only hope that your filth and criminal ways propel you to the eternal fires before you can again abuse women and small children.

Now go hence, heathen, and post not to me again.

(Thus sayeth sooth of irony.)
