LANSING, Mich. (AP) More Michigan residents have a favorable opinion of Republican presidential candidates John McCain and Rudolph Giuliani so far than they do of Mitt Romney, according to a poll released Friday by Lansing-based EPIC-MRA.
Fifty-nine percent of the 600 likely voters surveyed statewide said they had a favorable opinion of McCain, while 55 percent said the same of Giuliani and 38 percent said that of Romney.
The poll, conducted Jan. 31 through Feb. 8, had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4 percentage points and sampled voters of all political stripes, not just Republicans.
Romney's lower numbers might be attributable in part to the fact that he's the least known of the top three GOP contenders, even though his father was governor of Michigan from 1963-69. Nineteen percent didn't recognize his name, while McCain and Giuliani's names were recognized by all but 3 percent.
Twenty-six percent of those polled had an unfavorable opinion of McCain and Giuliani, while 18 percent had an unfavorable opinion of Romney. Twelve percent were undecided about McCain, 16 percent about Giuliani and 32 percent about Romney.
On the Democratic side, 50 percent had a favorable opinion of New York Sen. Hillary Clinton, while 45 percent had an unfavorable opinion and 5 percent were undecided.
Eleven percent didn't recognize the name of Illinois Sen. Barack Obama. But among those who did, 47 percent had a favorable opinion, 18 percent had an unfavorable opinion and 24 percent were undecided.
Hillary STILL carries super high unfavorables!
I took a peek at DU last night. There was a long thread trashing her and everyone noted her shifting stories about her support of a pre-emptive war.
The natives were restless indeed.
I would like nothing better than to see a complete meltdown of her campaign. In fact, I rather expect it.
You have some good pix today, Mr. Smorch!
In NYC, it probably was a good idea to get most of the handguns off the street. I've heard Rudy say that he's not interested in taking guns from honest citizens and I believe him. As far as the environmental thing, I don't see anything wrong with trying to shift from fossil fuels.
I'd pick the seasick crocodile.
There are 3 words which best describe John McCain: "Stink, stank, stunk!"
[...Both McCain and Giuliani are more conservative than y'all give 'em credit for...]
In the first part, I very much hope you're right. But CFR, McCain's baby, and a favorite of Rudy's, was just too big to be forgotten.
["...the number of that 49% who will support McCain/Giuliani is a lot bigger than the number of that 51% who will stay home..."]
As for the second part... you're spot-on. Which is why I'll vote for whoever the Republican nominee is, no matter how lame he/she may be.
If you would like to jump on board for Rudy for President 2008, please freep mail areafiftyone or let us know on this thread! We will be glad to add you to our ping list!
PKM
Just out of curiosity, how would you feel about a Rudy/Newt ticket in 2008? I know how you feel about the great Mayor, but how would you feel about adding Newt to the ticket?
No offense, bro, but betweeen your shilling for the scumbag Chinese government and sentiments like this, it is obvious that you are clueless when it comes to natural God-given civil rights.
Hurray for China, hurray for Rudy. Please to be biting me. Have nice day.
"Two words.....Duncan Hunter!"
I want Duncan Hunter to win the Republican nomination too! He is the only true conservative running, and all he needs is some TV and radio time so folks can hear him. I am sure he would pick up the independent votes and certainly the true Republican conservatives!
There is ample time to make a decision before the '08 primaries, however the more I see of Duncan Hunter, the more I am convinced of his political sincerity.
He has so far been a strait shooter politically, now it's up to Duncan Hunter himself to stick to his guns and not go wobbly when the MSM machine tries to turn the screws on his conviction.
What I know of him, he is very impressive.
Are we looking at "the comeback kid II"?
A third party candidate could create another 8 year debacle.
When aren't they at the DU??? ; )
DU?? Did you take a bath afterwords?
Really? He demanded that manufacturers make "...safer guns, with such features as trigger locks and 'personalization' measures that allow only authorized persons to fire the weapon."
MAYOR GIULIANI AND SPEAKER VALLONE ANNOUNCE CITY LAWSUIT AGAINST GUN INDUSTRY
F#ck China.
I hope you're prediction rings true. I see this '08 election as the affirmation of the 'Peter Principle' and on that premise a RINO wins the WH.
Not real confident (actually none at all) any conservative progress will be made in the house and senate.
and the Pubbie ticket will be...
McCain - Romney
-or-
McCain - Guiliani
-or-
McCain - somebody else
and there's a real fear about a McCain nomination here, and over on the Dark Side of the Force, because any Dhimmicrat candidate will lose the MOR voter, otherwise known as the moderates, or perhaps the Included Middle.
