UPDATE: Aircraft hit building at 71st and York Ave on East Side of Manhattan

Rush reports that a Cessna has been reported as crashing into (at least one) apartment complex in NYC Mannhattan's upper east side - on East 71st Street.

The UN is about a mile and a half due south of the struck building, not across the East River.

It just eerily feels like 9/11/01.... Thankfully it has been an hour and no other incidents are reported. I got my news in the first few minutes on that day from Free Republic. So this brings back unpleasant memories. Hopefully it will turn out that this was just an accident but it certainly is too early to determine that.

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "The building is very close to the East River. There was no word on casualties as firefighters battled the flames that shot up from several windows in the middle of the building. The Federal Aviation Administration has said a "general aviation" aircraft had hit the building.

A North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) spokesperson, which monitors air traffic, told CNN that it had not been tracking the aircraft."

The shepard Smith just said that if you see fighter planes in the air overhead, do not be concerned.

Since I live next to Miramar, I only get concerned when there are NOT planes in the air.

What I heard them saying was there is no indication at this time that it's terrorism related, not the it definitely wasn't terror related. I think they mean by this that there was no indication from ATC that an aircraft has been hijacked or suddenly gone off course without explanation. That's a very highly restricted piece of airspace there and an unidentified aircraft would receive a LOT of attention, as would one that appeared to be off course or not following ATC orders.

I see water being put on the floor below the fire so the FD is up there working on it.
