UK : Hundreds clash in street battle
Lancashire Evening Post ^ | 10/02/2006

Posted on 10/02/2006 1:03:08 PM PDT by Republicain

A teenager was stabbed when hundreds of people became involved in a battle on the streets of Preston. Trouble centred on the Jamea Masjid mosque in Clarendon Street, Avenham, for more than four hours last night (Sunday) and led to a massive policing operation.

Preston's police chief said the problems were triggered by local youths throwing stones at cars belonging to people attending the mosque.

This sparked a response from around 200 people inside the mosque who came out to defend those under attack.

It resulted in one 16-year-old Asian youth being stabbed in the arm, but ambulance crews were turned back as the police felt it was too dangerous for them to enter the scene.

Fighting continued into the early hours and led to police requiring back-up from officers as far away as Lancaster and Burnley.

Chief Supt Mike Barton, divisional commander for the area, said more than 100 officers were deployed and he was treating the incident as race-related.

He said: "Some people I spoke to at the mosque insisted it wasn't racial but I think some people at the mosque believe it was.

"Until we actually find the offenders and speak to them, and because some people believe it to be racial, then that's how we'll treat it."

Insp Simon Hayes, force incident manager for Lancashire Police, described the incident as "community tension" with youths on the streets in a "confrontational mood".

He said: "As a result of that, there was a high-level policing operation to reassure the public and disperse these groups.

"There was no major disorder or serious incident."

Ilyas Desail, of the Jamea mosque on Clarendon Street, said: "It is not a mosque issue, it is a community issue.

"It is the month of Ramadan and that is the only reason the mosque has been brought into this.

"We are all upset by this, everyone is upset. No one is going to be happy with the tarnishing of such great efforts we have made in Preston in the past 40 years."

A mother-of-three, 33, from Clarendon Street, said: "It's getting ridiculous and for the past two nights there's been fighting."

I'd be insulted, but I wouldn't threaten to burn down the British embassy nor behead the ambassador. I'd just boycott.

And yes, I would see it as inflaming the Muslim world and wouldn't call it oversensitivity. I wouldn't blame them.

It's WHAT you do with your negative reaction that is the crux as to all the outrage AT the Islamic world for us in the West

You are a rare exception amongst Freepers, I must say.

If you feel that strongly about it, boycott the television company, given that Britain is the largest single foreign investor in the United States, it's highly likely they have investments on your side of the Atlantic. That wouldn't bother me in the slightest. I don't mind people punishing companies or individuals for being stupid. What I do mind is people drawing incorrect conclusions about an entire country based on this ad. I mind the fact that people don't believe the television company, in a free society, have the right to be dumb in public.

Maybe, but dads don't typically become jealous of the sons. ;) (I'm joking, Ivan! lol)

As to the original topic, I'm glad to see that the Brits have finally had enough and are fighting back. I think you're going to hear about more and more of these incidents happening.

But wouldn't you agree that Miss M's reaction "brought tears to her eyes" show you that she likes you Brits and maybe cares about what you think about us Americans?

If I didn't like you, I wouldn't give a flying flip what you thought of me. I wouldn't even give it a second thought.

Years ago, I was at a forum on British tv at the New York Museum of Broadcasting. Two or three panelists (John Mortimer was one) was going on about how silly and childish American television was. Finally, a man in the back of the audience called out, "Not like Benny Hill, of course..." To be fair, the British panelists laughed out loud at that and David Frost leapt to our defense.

I think she's way too hasty and overreacted.

If I didn't like you, I wouldn't give a flying flip what you thought of me. I wouldn't even give it a second thought.

I am pro-American. That's why I actually like this forum.

Right my friend, and we can call you all overweight and obese in return.

My teeth may not be Hollywood's delight, but they all answer the roll, they do the job - and they are my very own - for the last 60 years.

:-)

I spend a lot of my year in the US and I work for Boeing, so chill, you isolationist freaks....

You guys are catching up (overweight and obese), so I'd watch watch you said about that. ;)

But not as bad as we are over here. :(

You hit the nail on the head! Of course, that's why I teared up. No one dislikes being ridiculed in a country they love, admire and willingly gives thousands of tourist dollars to.

I've watched MP since I was 12 years old.

They and the Beatles were the first reasons I fell in love with the UK.

As vrwcagent0498 said "No, you belittled her reaction to it. That's what it sounded like to me." and still do.
I had not heard of these billboards and was quite shocked by then I would not have known they were about a tv program.
I think you have made to much of the original post.

Yea you have to renew (repay) the license every year. It's best explained here:

http://www.tvlicensing.co.uk/information/index.jsp#link2

A colour TV Licence costs £131.50 and a black and white licence costs £44.00.

Here's an example of an actual threatening letter they send out to households with no license on their records (red comments have been added by the site below, not by me):

http://www.taith.org.uk/tv/newapproach.htm

"To the Legal Occupier [This is a new term. Is it designed to maximise the threatening impact?].

"TV Licensing Officers will soon be visiting (your street).

"You do not have a TV licence - you must take steps to avoid further action. [Further threatening sentence? TV licensing is making a big assumption that the legal occupier needs to take steps simply because there's no licence at the household].

"After repeated reminders that this address is currently unlicensed, we have still had no response from you. If you watch or record television programme services without a valid TV licence it is against the law [here at least is a recognition that you don't need a licence simply for owning a TV] and we now suspect you of wilful evasion of payment. [harassment?].

"It would be wise for you to take steps to avoid legal action [further threat?]

"You may not realise that our enforcement officers have been catching far more people recently, because:
  • "Using sophisticated equipment on unlicensed households, we can identify if a TV is being watched within 20 seconds [households not breaking the law would far rather TV licensing gathered evidence of usage rather than sending letters or cold-calling inspectors, both of which is harassment].
  • "In addition to making daytime visits, they're now authorised to visit you evenings and weekends [One would always assume that it would be part of the job to visits at peak TV viewing times].
  • "They can apply for a search warrant to enter your home; and have the right to examine and test any television receiving equipment located on the premises [Doesn't this confirm that you don't need to let an inspector in, unless he has a warrant? Further, doesn't this also confirm that even if you do let him in, there's no obligation to show him your installation?]
"Avoid the risk of legal proceedings and a fine of up to £1,000 by calling..." [The letter concludes with the usual comments about making payments and licence fee costs].

I didn't care much for rock and roll until the Beatles came on the scene. Jerry Lee Lewis was very good but the Beatles were great.
