NEW YORK — Willie Nelson says the Dixie Chicks "got a raw deal" from a disapproving public following their criticism of President Bush.
"I think the fact that they were overseas and onstage had a little bit to do with it because you're speaking to other people about our business," the 73-year-old country crooner said in an interview in this week's Time magazine.
The trio caught harsh criticism after lead singer Natalie Maines told a London audience in 2003 that the group was "ashamed" Bush was from their home state of Texas.
Nelson said he was surprised his remarks about Bush a year earlier during an overseas news conference didn't incite a similar controversy.
"I said 'He's not from Texas and he ain't a cowboy, so let's stop trashin' Texans and cowboys.' It got a little chuckle, but I didn't get run out of the country," Nelson told the magazine.
Nelson recently launched his own XM Radio channel and published "The Tao of Willie," in which he offers his philosophy on subjects ranging from marijuana to war.

This is one of the reasons that I continue to be a Jimmy Buffett fan, despite his liberal leanings. I wouldn't even know about his politics except from reports of to whom he has contributed. He never brings it on stage.

Yeah, but did you ever notice none of his songs requires any voice control, i.e. holding a note for any particular length of time? He either chooses songs little to no voice control, or they are arranged for him that way.
Now I don't expect him to have the ability of an opera singer or anything but, lord almighty, anybody can sing his songs!

It is obvious what the difference is between Willies' comment about Bush above and Mapes comment that she was 'ashamed' that Bush was from Texas.
On the one hand, Willie is simply dodging the complaint with humor to defend Texans and cowboys, on the other Mapes is publicly damning our Prez on foreign soil.
Willie have gone liberal, but not to the extent the Chicks have ... big differences still exist between these two sets of entertainers to this conservative redneck ...

Willie has a great voice but he just might be the dumbest entertainer I have ever seen. I bet his IQ is in the high 80's, probably not retarded but still stupid.
She never had another record, as far as I know. Best concerts were Jerry Jeff Walker (he plays better drunk) and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Buck Owens and the Buckaroos also use to put on on heck of a show. Both the Dirt Band and Buck Owens sounded every bit as good in person as they do on the records. Some don't know it, but those two groups had some of the best fiddle players that ever did country music. Don Rich, who unfortunately died in a motorcycle accident, was the person who gave Buck Owens band their distinctive sound, and was, IMHO, the best fiddle and steel guitar player of his era. I still think his cover of Orange Blossom Special is the best one ever done. Linda Ronstadt, when she was young and beautiful, also did fantastic concerts.

I wish I could have heard the Earle Scruggs Review live. I've got a lot of their songs. Linda Ronstadt's Silver Wings, with their playing, is really special. Ronstadt's the only super lefty that I just can't quit listening to her music.
I like some of Willie's songs but he is a man of low character.
The Dixie Chicks have the right to say anything they want too. It's their right to free speech/expression.
And I have the right to respond to what they say and not buy their albums. It's my right to free speech/expression.
