100% agreement
Ditto that.
"This level of sophistication's definitely points to Iran/Syria backing and support."
Ditto that -- especially Iran
Threat Matrix seems to be slipping a bit. I had expected more commentary here this week. Been hanging out at TB instead. That'll get your heartrate going if you're not careful.
I'm woefully ignorant of the intricate political and military implications of what has been happening all week, but I must say that the criticism of Bush for what is happening is absurd!
The Syrian ambassador said something last night about it being the US responsibility to reign in Israel. Hogwash! It's Lebanon's (& Iran's)responsibility to reign in Hizbollah.
I'm not into making predictions but I find what's going on in the ME more unsettling than normal, probably because of the NK missile test (complete with a delegation of observers from Iran). What is everyone else thinking?

War Exposes PA-Hizbullah-Iran Connection

A source within the Palestinian Authority revealed Friday that Fatah and Hamas factions are allied with Hizbullah terrorists. The connection is not new, said the source, who asked to remain unnamed.
IDF sources added that Iran manufactured and supplied Hizbullah with the long-range rockets that have been hitting Haifa and other areas since Thursday.
"The Lebanese resistance movement, Hizbullah, and now its General Secretary Hassan Nasrallah, have affirmed commitment to aiding the Palestinians against Israeli attacks," the Palestine News Network (PNN) reported Thursday.
A spokesman for the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, the military wing of the Fatah faction headed by PA President Mahmoud Abbas, announced that the Hizbullah attacks were a "message and a mortal blow to Israel."
In a statement released by the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, the spokesman thanked Hizbullah and noted that Islamic Jihad and Hamas terrorists are also working together.

I have not seen any reports of Syria mobilizing their military towards the Israeli border. Has anyone else???
If they haven't, it could mean a couple of things.
1. They are cheerleading and don't really want to get wacked.
2. They are going to get wacked and wonder what hit them if they get linked to Hizballah's attacks.
3. They know that if they mobilize, it would be provocative and Israel would be justified in a pre-emptive strike, a-la 1967.
THANK YOU backhoe.
I'd go with #3.
If Syria was to mobilize, they would also draw the world's attention to them ("Brink of War X 6," etc.). Right now, it seems as if a large part of the global community is eager to stand back and declare that Israel shouldn't have the right to protect itself in the way it is thus far. Operationally, whoever wants to see this happen has probably planned for Hizballah to be able to act independently for some time.
Godzilla said in part, "I have not seen any reports of Syria mobilizing their military towards the Israeli border. Has anyone else???"

"Syria, Iran Seen As Behind Kidnappings ~~ From the Associated Press....Surprise..."

BEIRUT, Lebanon (AP) -
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "The fighting between Israeli forces and Islamic militants in Lebanon hasn't touched Iran or Syria yet, but many analysts think those countries were the hidden hand behind Hezbollah's capture of two Israeli soldiers.
At the White House and in Arab capitals, the belief is strong that the Mideast's top two hard-line states are playing a dangerous game to increase their influence. However, analysts say it could backfire and weaken Hezbollah, and by extension its two patrons.
"We would be idiots if we believed it was only about the Israeli captives," Hazem Saghieh, a senior Lebanese columnist with the London-based Arabic newspaper Al-Hayat, told The Associated Press.
"The issue, at the end of the day, is all about Syria and Iran, and Hezbollah is just giving them more trump cards," Saghieh said."
