"Iran and the Recent Escalation on Israel's Borders (2): Reaction in Iran, Lebanon, and Syria"
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "On July 13, 2006, the Iranian, Syrian, and Lebanese media published articles and statements on the emerging conflict between Israel and Hizbullah.
It is noteworthy that on May 4, 2006, Hizbullah founder and former secretary-general Sheikh Subhi Al-Tufeili told Al-Arabiya TV: "They [Hizbullah] are committed to the Iranian policy... I have said before that the Shi'ites in Lebanon serve as Iran's 'playing ground'... Hizbullah definitely fosters its relations with the Syrians, but its real leadership is 'the rule of the jurisprudent' - in other words, [Iranian Supreme Leader Ali] Khamenei." (See MEMRI TV Clip No. 1132, May 4, 2006, http://www.memritv.org/search.asp?ACT=S9&P1=1132 ).

"Iran and the Recent Escalation on Israel's Borders"
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "In statements published over the last few weeks, senior Iranian officials advocated an escalation of the violent activity against Israel and against "Zionists" around the world.
Additionally, in mid-June 2006, Syria and Iran signed a military cooperation agreement. The Syrian defense minister stated on that occasion that the two countries "are establishing a joint front against Israel... [since] Iran regards Syria's security as its own."
For the last few weeks, Iran has been constantly delaying its response to the ultimatum presented to it by 5+1 (the five permanent U.N. Security Council members plus Germany) regarding its nuclear program, since it has no intention of accepting the international community's terms and of suspending its uranium enrichment activities. Iran was required to respond to the ultimatum by July 12 (before the G8 summit in Saint Petersburg). As of July 13, 2006, since Iran failed to respond, the international community has decided to refer the Iranian case back to the U.N. Security Council. So far, the international community has not yielded to Iran's attempts to evade the ultimatum, and has denied Iran's request to postpone the deadline to August 22, 2006.
Iranian National Security Council Secretary Ali Larijani, who is in charge of Iran's nuclear dossier, made a surprise visit to Damascus after meeting with E.U. Council Secretary-General Javier Solana on July 11, 2006. Syrian Vice President Farouq Al-Shar' stated after the meeting that the resistance [movements] in Lebanon and in Palestine [i.e. Hizbullah and Hamas] would make their own decisions regarding their affairs.
It is possible that the escalation on Israel's borders, set off by elements supported by Iran - Hamas, Hizbullah and Syria - is meant to take the pressure off Iran by triggering a major military clash in the Middle East, which will divert international attention from Iran's nuclear program.
The following are excerpts from statements by top Iranian figures and details about the Syrian-Iranian military agreement:"

"Syrians shoot at Israel"
WND ^ | 7-14-06 | Aaron Klein
Posted on 07/14/2006 12:02:31 PM PDT by OPS4
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "AL-ZAURA REGION, Golan Heights While Israeli military sources in the Golan Heights are reporting Syrian military gunfire directed inside the Jewish state, Lebanese political sources are telling WND they expect a provocation of some kind from Damascus.
Israeli Defense Forces are attempting to determine the exact source of the gunfire. If the source cannot be determined, sources say, Israel may choose to ignore or officially deny it occurred in an effort to avoid widening what is rapidly becoming a regional conflict.
Meanwhile, Lebanese sources predict a small, limited provocation against Israel perhaps a small skirmish or the use of Palestinian groups on the Syrian side of the border firing mortars under the direction of the Syrian army. It would not be a major attack, the sources say, just a minor provocation in conjunction with Iran to show Syria is in solidarity with Hezbollah and the Palestinians, who launched the original attacks against Israel on two fronts Gaza and southern Lebanon.
Yesterday, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said an Israeli strike on Syria would be considered an attack on the whole Islamic world that would bring a "fierce response."
"If the Zionist regime commits another stupid move and attacks Syria, this will be considered like attacking the whole Islamic world and this regime will receive a very fierce response," Ahmadinejad was quoted by Iranian state television as saying in a telephone conversation with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
Israel has blamed Syria and Iran for the Hezbollah rocket attacks on towns and cities in northern Israel. In recent weeks, Israel has buzzed the palace of Assad with fighter-bombers as a warning against hostile actions.
Ahmadinejad has called repeatedly for the destruction of Israel or for moving the Jewish state to Europe. Iran is believed to be developing a nuclear weapons program and has long-range missiles capable of striking the Jewish state."

'Suspicious powder' found in envelope at Times
NEW YORK
Police were called to The New York Times on Friday after the newspaper received an envelope containing a suspicious-looking powder.
A worker opened the envelope, which contained a "white powdery substance," at about 12:30 p.m. It was not immediately known what the substance was.
Police and a Times spokeswoman, Catherine Mathis, said the envelope also contained an editorial with an "X" through it.
Mathis said the worker followed the newspaper's security protocol by putting the envelope in a plastic bag and calling police.
The employee was taken to a hospital to be examined, but was showing no symptoms or injuries, Mathis said......

Woman, grandson killed as rocket hits house in Meron
The Jerusalem Post ^ | Jul. 14, 2006 | STAFF AND AP
Posted on 07/14/2006 1:26:19 PM PDT by UScbass
Over 100 Katyusha rockets that were fired at northern Israel on Friday killed a woman and a 5-year-old child, and wounded about 50 others.
The rockets landed across northern Israel in the following communities: Nahariya, Safed, Hatzor, Yesod Ha'ma'ala, Bar'am, Kiryat Shmona, Mahanayim, Horfesh, Biranit, Meron, Ma'alot, Matat, near Rosh Pina, Sasa, Karmiel, Pki'in, Misgav Am, Metula, Beit Hillel, Shar Yishuv and near Kibbutz Hagoshrim and Kibbutz Ma'ayan Baruch.
On Friday evening, a woman and her 5-year-old grandson were killed in a rocket strike on the town of Meron. The child's mother and father were lightly wounded. Another child was listed in moderate to serious condition.
In light of the situation, the IDF has decided to operate a silent radio wave in the following frequencies: FM 102.2, 98.5, 95.7.
This enables those who keep the Sabbath to leave the radio turned on and listen to emergency announcements.
Earlier, 18 people were wounded in a barrage of rockets on Safed and Nahariya. A rocket landing in Safed hit a residential building, wounding 12. One of the wounded in Safed sustained serious wounds, another was moderately wounded.
Nahariya also sustained another barrage of five Katyusha in the late morning, causing a brush fire in an open area. Western Galilee fire fighters were working to control the flames.
Over 700 Katyusha rockets and mortar shells have been fired on northern Israel in the current offensive in Lebanon, a senior IDF official reported on Friday.
This continuous barrage of rockets included several Katyushas that landed in Nahariya and the surrounding area and one that hit a house in Kiryat Shmona early Friday afternoon. No one was wounded in the attacks, which followed close on the heels of four rockets that landed near Rosh Pina and Safed earlier in the day and caused power failures in the area, but no injuries.
Meanwhile, the second fatality in the Safed attack on Thursday evening was identified as Nitzan Roseban, 33, a Safed resident. Roseban was seriously wounded when a Katyusha rocket landed near his motorcycle, and died of his wounds in the hospital.
Army spokesman Cpt. Jacob Dallal announced that Israel "cannot tolerate a situation where a terrorist organization is operating from a sovereign country on our northern border and threatening well over half a million Israeli civilians."
On Thursday, in a drastic escalation of what has become a war across Israel's northern border, Hizbullah fired Katyusha rockets that landed in Haifa and Nahariya while the IDF laid siege to Lebanon, imposing a naval blockade and bombing Beirut's international airport.
Late Thursday night, the IDF's Home Front Command ordered up to a million residents throughout the North - including Haifa, Acre, Nahariya, Safed, Kiryat Shmona and nearby communities - to stay in shelters in case of additional attacks.
Argentinean immigrant Monica Lehrer Zeidman, 40, was killed after a Katyusha rocket hit her home in Nahariya and several others were reported to be in critical and serious conditions from rocket attacks in Safed. A man in Safed later died of his wounds. In total, over 120 Israelis were injured on Thursday after over 100 Katyusha rockets landed throughout northern Israel.
The cities that sustained the most rocket attacks were Nahariya and Safed. Hizbullah also repeatedly bombarded nearby communities throughout the day, while the IDF conducted a massive operation against Lebanon following the capture of two Israeli soldiers during Wednesday's Hizbullah attack along the northern border. Eight other soldiers were killed in that attack.

Terrorists Killed, Captured; Helo Crash Response Draws Praise
American Forces Press Service
WASHINGTON, July 14, 2006 Coalition and Iraqi forces have killed or captured numerous terrorism suspects yesterday and today, and military officials praised the teamwork involved among responding forces after a coalition helicopter crashed yesterday.
Coalition forces captured an al Qaeda in Iraq terrorist and two other suspects during a raid today near Baghdad, military officials reported. The targeted individual is reported to be an "Umar Brigade" member and recruiter with control of several terrorist fighting cells, officials said. The Umar Brigade is an al Qaeda-sponsored Iraqi insurgent group known to target Shiite Moslems and specifically intending to incite sectarian violence.
Officials said the assault force received inconsequential small-arms fire upon arrival to the target area. The troops quickly secured the target location and detained the terrorists without further incident. No coalition forces were injured during the operation.
Elsewhere, coalition forces killed a suspected terrorist and captured another suspect in a raid in Baghdad's Abu Ghraib neighborhood today. The raid's targeted individual was linked to a foreign fighter facilitator killed along with two other terrorists June 12 during a coalition raid northeast of Amiriyah, officials said. Credible intelligence also connected the targeted individual to a Saudi Arabian terrorist killed in a June 28 coalition raid near Iskandariyah. This foreign fighter had extensive dealings in helping finance terrorist activities such as car-bomb attacks, officials said.
Overnight, Iraqi security forces conducted a raid in Baghdad as part of Operation Together Forward, the Iraqi government's plan to improve security conditions in the city. Officials said the purpose of the raid was to capture insurgent leaders responsible for numerous deaths of Iraqi citizens. The insurgents are also responsible for running false checkpoints, kidnappings, torture and other intimidation tactics, officials added. No Iraqi or coalition forces were wounded or killed during this operation, and officials said "multiple" insurgents were detained.
Multinational Division Baghdad soldiers killed two terrorists and wounded one after engaging four terrorists in a small-arms firefight early yesterday in northern Baghdad. Soldiers from the 7th Squadron, 10th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, spotted several individuals carrying what appeared to be a mortar tube. Following a brief firefight, the soldiers found a PKC machine gun near the bodies of the two dead men and saw two other terrorists fleeing the scene into nearby houses.
Iraqi army soldiers assisted in establishing a cordon and searching the houses, where the third suspect was found with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. Three more terrorists were then discovered hiding in a ditch, each armed with AK-47s and ammunition. The wounded terrorist was transported to a U.S. medical facility for treatment, along with a wounded Iraqi army soldier.
In other news, the pilots of a Multinational Division Baghdad AH-64D Apache Longbow helicopter that crashed yesterday near Yusufiyah, southwest of Baghdad, at approximately 2 p.m. walked away from the wreckage and have since been returned to duty, officials said.
"The great skill and quick reactions of the pilots enabled them to walk away," said Army Brig. Gen. David Halverson, assistant division commander for support, 4th Infantry Division.
A UH-60 helicopter from the 101st Airborne Division flying in the area picked up the pilots less than 10 minutes after they exited their aircraft. Ground troops from 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, responded to secure the site and assist in the recovery of the aircraft. The soldiers secured the crash site as the downed aircraft recovery team went to work.
"This incident has shown what great teamwork is all about," Halverson said. "Coalition forces brought expertise from all areas and displayed that warrior ethos in record time to recover our pilots and begin recovery of their aircraft."

Hezbollah: We're ready for 'open war'
Associated Press ^ | July 14, 2006 | ZEINA KARAM
Posted on 07/14/2006 1:51:37 PM PDT by brain bleeds red
BEIRUT, Lebanon - Hezbollah's leader said Friday that his group is ready for "open war" with Israel, and as his words were broadcast, guerrillas attacked an Israeli warship that had been firing missiles into southern Beirut.
Speaking defiantly in an audiotape on Hezbollah's Al-Manar television less than an hour after missiles struck his headquarters and home, Sheik Hassan Nasrallah addressed Israelis and said they must take responsibility for their actions.
"You wanted an open war, and we are heading for an open war," he said. "We are ready for it."
"The surprises that I have promised you will start now. Now in the middle of the sea, facing Beirut, the Israeli warship that has attacked the infrastructure, people's homes and civilians look at it burning," Nasrallah said.
"It will sink and with it will sink scores of Israeli Zionist soldiers. This is just the beginning," he warned.
Al-Jazeera reported the Israeli military was searching for four missing troops from the ship. Israeli officials would not immediately comment on the Arab broadcaster's report; an army spokesman said earlier the ship had apparently been struck by a rocket but that the damage was minor and no one was injured.
