Per Fox News...
All true, but the biggest tummy ache in Washington today belongs to Lincoln Chaffee. He is caught between a rock and a hard place. The good news is that he cant politically vote against Alito, but he cant vote for him either. He loses, no matter what. He will lose his reelection to either a Republican or Democrat, but he will lose either way because of this vote he must take.
Umm...Ok. Do you not agree Alito is a good pick ignoring the soap opera that was Miers?
Just to be clear, we don't know that yet. The judges he has appointed so far could easily be judicial activists that just happen to lean to the right at the moment.
We have only analyzed in depth about 7 or 8 high profile ones that the senate wasn't letting through. The others may have gotten through because the de facto democraticly controlled senate because they weren't viewed as originalists.
Yep. I've pointed out similar things before. In Vietnam there were 15.9 troops killed per day, vs. 2.1 killed per day in Iraq, as of 2000. And over 800 of those 2,000 were accidents, which happen even when there is no war. Plus, Iraq is three times larger than South Vietnam, we never controlled the north, South Vietnam never had real elections or a constitution, North Vietnam never fell, and on the best day in Vietnam it was never as good as the worst day in Iraq. Commparrisons of the two show a complete and total lack of factual understanding of history, and frankly, anyone that arguss Iraq is like Vietnam is a totally stupid and inept fool. My father served four tours in Vietnam and he's said a few times he'd of much rather been in Iraq and Vietnam. Hands down. Far as I'm concerned, that's all that needs be said. 8)
The Senate IS being dealt with.
If you go to the article I referred to and looked in detail at the compilation of the GoA scorecards in detail (or go to their site to begin with) or go to any of a number of other scorecard sites, you can see that the Senate is s-l-o-w-l-y becoming more conservative as the super-lib Senators retire.
It is amazing to me at how almost totally invariant a senator's voting is from session to session in most of these scorecards, so trying to apply additional "conservative leverage" seems pretty useless. We have to engage in the decades-long process of replacing a Senators.
It only takes four years to elect a new president, so people think the whole country can change quickly. It doesn't, though, it takes decades. It is hard for people in the more conservative regions of the country to appreciate how far the conservative movement has come in this regard when they don't see their desired legislation being passed. My best advice to them a couple years ago was to send money to Thune, and to live with Shoomie. Now, it is to try to defeat Byrd, and similarly vulnerable liberals, with at least a slightly conservative Republican - even if they a supporter or protectionism, etc. Get them one or two at a time...
We have to be big-picture oriented, and not focussed on the short term situation.
Clarence Thomas, and I don't know who the other is.
Do you think he might obstain? I mean, two Pubs did that on Ginsburg. He may just obstain, or have some "pressing" matter that precluded him from being on the floor for the vote. 8) That would be convenient. Wuss. I hope he gets replaced. The Republican Majority is really only about 50, at best. The RINOs are totally unreliable and untrustworthy.
Looks like the David Duke wing of the right-of-center coalition has been heard from.
Thanks for that link. Will do! 8)
Chaffee, Collins and Snowe are most likely the most conservative senators that could possibly be elected from their very blue states.
We are lucky to have those three as a full blown socialist would have that seat instead if we ran a hardcore conservative. Those three might not vote in lockstep but they do a lot more often than a democrat ever would.
The guys to be mad at are the moderates from Red states. Linsdey Graham is a prime example. What the heck is a red state like South Carolina doing with a moderate?
Yes, but about two or three terms too late for my liking! However, unless Michael Steele can pull off a miracle we will just get another liberal Democrat sock puppet.
Excellent choice! He should have been his first choice to replace O'Connor. Miers was a dud.
Now, let the games begin! :)
I hear Harry Reid Hates him.
Are there any judges that Bush has put up that have not proven to be conservative non-activist judges at the very least? I am unaware of any, and when you add that to the firm democrat resistance to over 100 of Bush's Judges, I do think that after nearly 5 years now, it is safe to conclude that Bush totally kept his promise to only put conservative constructionise Judges on the courts of all levels.
I am not at all ignorant of Senate practices.
A committee can choose to not act on a nominee at all, and can easily choose to never send the nominee to the floor of the Senate. The committee can even choose to never have a hearing on a nominee and scuttle an appointment in that way.
"Sarbanes is retiring."
Bwahhahah! Sarbanes has been "retired" for years. The only time you ever heard his name was when he woke the silly Maryland lefty sheep up to vote for him again. I hope Lt. Governor Steele wins and makes the seat something to consider.
Contacted him, Bush, bill Nelson and Martinez. Finally a good nomination.
