Now, I humbly submit that all the squawkers at FR and the haughty pundits had better be absolutely willing go to the mat in support of Alito! People wanted a fight? Fine. Now don't slink away and watch from the grandstands!

Unfortunately, many of the Bush-bashers have made it clear that Bush-bashing is more important than fighting for this nominee right on this thread.

You're wrong. I think 99% (or more) of those who were opposed to Bush's nomination of Harriet Miers are absolutely ecstatic about President Bush's nomination of Samuel Alito. For some unfathomable reason, only the rabid pro-Miers FR posters still seem to be arguing, attacking and insulting those who were opposed to her nomination as an unknown stealth nomination. We needed a strongly principled, verifiable constructionist, conservative such as Alito (or JRB, Luttig, Owens, etc) that we can rally around and support, and beat the DimWits on constitutional issues. We now have the SC nominee that we elected and re-elected President Bush to provide the American people with.

Awesome. This has the potential to go down as a classic. I will be posting it every time Scalito writes a noteworthy opinion on the Supreme Court.

Very true, with an exception. The one who I wouldn't say that about is she who cannot be named without posting her picture. If she supports Alito, that won't be based on any desire to win favor back from anybody.

Thoush I still wish the New Jersey and Wisconsin were active BBGs for use as mobile force projection and close ground support, but I'm a hopeless romantic when it comes to that. Though the Navy does NOT have an effective large calibre shore bombardment platform, and the New Jersey and Wisconsin would give them that for a fraction of the price of building new assets. Plus, having active BBs is a huge morale builder in the Navy and adds a lot of pride as the only Navy on Earth to have them, but that day has passed.

We have a SCOTUS pick that should please everyone on this site, and most of the posts to this thread are petty bickering. I suggest we forget our respective positions on Miers and set aside the religion issue; the Dems are beating the war drums, and Alito/Bush/Senators are going to need all the vocal support we can muster.

You "were demanding an originalist scholar" by denying the importance of an originalist reading of the Constitution.

Huh? I don't deny the importance of an originalist reading of the constitution. I am simply saying that "constitutionally qualified" means nothing. Pee Wee Herman is "constitutionally qualified" yet he is still unqualified. Now, if all that you thinks matters is being "constitutionally qualified" please tell me, why have advice and consent at all? If the Framers intended for the President to pick anybody who is "constitutionally qualified" then what would the Senat have to advise and consent on?

I had heard some, but not that it was that bad. Do you think she really won't make it two and a half more years? I don't want her dead, but I do want her off the court. I do remember hearing grequently last year that Stevens wasn't doing much better and that he rarely is even out of a wheelchair. Makes me think he's determined to hang on till there's a democrat President. If the two of them retire, GOD what will that mean for this country!?!? AWESOME!!!

Agreed, it's time to regroup and unify our support.

You all who fought Miers by making such demands were just as destructive to this process and just as reprehensible as the Demodogs when they were filibustering Brown, Owens and Pryor, and just as unConstitutional with that behavior.

You have no idea what you're talking about. It's sad, really.

"Libertarians will not be overly pleased with Alito, his views on open borders, religious displays on public property and abortion do not accord with the Libertarian Party much at all."

Most Libertarians I know don't buy the whole Libertarian hog. In fact, I think the open border types could fit in a phone booth. At least I hope so. The people I was referring to are more "leave my guns alone and get out of my face" type of people. They worked for Bush in large part to get pro-2nd Amendment people on the bench.
