It's what they do.

Yes, Sink. You're right. It's what they do. What they live for -- I've seen it many, many times first hand here in the California district where I live and volunteer on Republican election campaigns.

Why? It's true

I'm switching back to Independent.

That was Harriet Miers problem too - she was all over the map and no one could understand an underlying principle. If there was one.

If your highest principle is that you don't want to ever have to fight for a belief or see someone else do it, you might be happier some place else.

(For what it's worth) a local talkshow host has been saying Bush put her up to have her fail, in order to nominate a red meat conservitive.
Don't know weather I buy this or not, I throw it out to see what others say.

Bush is screwed no matter what he does. If the nominee is too conservative, the liberals will block the nomination. If the nominee is too liberal, conservative Bush supporters will torpedo the nominee.

I would hate to be in his shoes right now.

Just as I predicted. W is now perceived as severely weakened and wounded. His enemies will move in for the political kill.

And they probably won't even be polite enough to say "thanks" to the elitist conservatives.

But I really feel sorry for the person who vetted Miers for the Court.

Why feel sorry for THAT person? That person should be hammered for any contribution made on behalf of Miers...was it Andy Card? If so, shame on him! IMHO, Miers should have declined the President from the get-go.

Of course they won't be behind the next pick, Howlin.

They don't support anything this President does. They don't support him any more than the leftists do.

And they get their kicks out of mocking anyone who respects him as a leader.

Their happiness is only in someone else's pain. Pray for Harriet Miers. She is an honorable woman..........a quality that these guys can't even understand.

"Bush needs to find another Roberts and push him/her on that paltry gang of 14."

LOL! Almost nobody liked Roberts in the beginning either.

Whether or not this turns out to be a victory for the Democrats depends on what happens next. The problem is, too many conservatives are afraid of the Dems, so would be unnecessarily apprehensive about the choice of someone like Brown. But the fact is, the Democrats have no popular support for their position on this. All they have is media support, which creates the illusion of popular support.

The reason the Dems are so adamant about the judiciary is precisely that they know that their views are outside the mainstream, so they need the judiciary to impose them. Does anybody here deny this basic fact? Anybody at all? OK, so if this truth is undeniable, then what the hell are we afraid of? We can take this message to the people, and put these clowns completely on the defensive once and for all. This is truly one of those cases where the only thing to fear is (blind, irrational) fear itself.

Bears repeating! :)

We WILL pick up MORE seats in Congress if this card is played correctly!

Bush hurt Bush politically. Not us. He picked her, he pick Brown to head FEMa, He has let spending go out of control, He has left our borders wide open. We did not. We are trying to save this party. If the party continues on its course we will lose at the ballot box. Simple as that. The Dems are being thought of by the public as the fiscal conservatives. Is that not a clear warning to you?

Even though his support for Miers may have been clouded and based on a single issue (religion) and therefore wrong in principle - what he did as a Green Beret (see his tag line) in Vietnam deserves some respect.

I have stated many times on FR I do not consider Jimmy Carter a true Evangelical.

My real support for a religious judge has to do with the Souters and O'Conners. A solid believer will not change over time. One only has to look at the solid conservatives on the court; Scalia, Thomas, and Roberts. These individuals can be counted on not to change. Many of you did not see it, but Miers fits the same mold, maybe not in scholarship with Scalia or Thomas, but she is solid in her belief system. There was just too much disinformation put out about her on FR.

The ubers will simply move on to some other issue, where they'll plant their flag and threaten to not vote in 2006.

All 5,000 of them.

So, it was right for Bush to nominate Souter; Reagan to nominate O'Connor and Kennedy?

I don't know if I'd blame Reagan for Kennedy. The guy just turned left on certain things after being confirmed. It just wasn't predictable.
