Bush is screwed no matter what he does. If the nominee is too conservative, the liberals will block the nomination. If the nominee is too liberal, conservative Bush supporters will torpedo the nominee.

I would hate to be in his shoes right now.

That's why he needs our prayers, rintense.

Only divine guidance will help him see what needs to be done now. It is a humanly impossible situation that he has been placed in.

the liberals will TRY TO block the nomination.

There, I fixed it. RWP, it's all bluster. They didn't even filibuster the supposed sexual predator Clarence Thomas. I double dog dare the liberals to successfully filibuster JRB. I call that bluff. They are full of hot air. American voters don't want a SCOTUS nominee filibustered. I don't think it even matters which party nominated the candidate to the general public. I haven't seen any poll to suggest that a SCOTUS filibuster by either party would be supported by the public.

I disagree. If Bush nominates a strict constitutionalist and conservative with battle-tested, impecable, verifiable credentials (like Luttig, McConnell, Alioto, Brown, Jone, Owen, etc), he will see a tremendous outpouring of support from the conservative majority that elected him to do exactly that. It is time for Bush to stop pandering and appeasing the RINOs & DimWits because they will hate & despise him anyway. Give us a nominee that we can rally around and support, not another stealth nominee or liberal-moderate nominee like Gonzales. Do the right thing, GW Bush!

So since the political pressure is equal either way, he might as well do the right thing and nominate a solid constitutionalist like Brown, and actually fight for her.

He has to decide: Would he rather fight liberals, whose only interest is getting judges who'll impose their leftist views against the will of the people, or fight conservatives, who want a judges who, relative to liberal judges, would mostly uphold the will of the people? Could the choice be clearer?

You don't understand. The liberals will try to block ANYONE at this point that was not on THEIR approved list. Miers was on Reid's approved list. This fact alone disturbs me. And when they do block the nomination, we call to end the filibuster. Bush is NOT the one in the hot seat. The Senators need to pull their weight too and play the "Constitutional Option" card if it needs to be played.

The amnesia regarding the Roberts selection is astounding.

But obviously the course for Bush is simple: do the right thing, nominate someone good, and fight for what's right, and let the chips fall where they may. If the Democrats want to go extremist-wacko on some nominee, they'll be the ones paying the price with the public. If Bush caves to appease the Democrats he and the Republicans will pay the price.
