Ann Coulter just took apart President Bush's SCOTUS nominee on the air during her appearance on the Mike Rosen show here in Denver on 850am KOA. She called for listeners to write their senators to oppose the nomination. Wish you could have heard it!
Ann said - "Totally unqualified", called Judge Roberts "a 'dream' candidate in light of this nomination", mentioned "cronyism" over and over. Much more that I'm trying to digest. I called the station to see if they saved the audio, but no luck on that. Mike Rosen was just about speechless as Ann went on and on about why this was a lousy choice.
I agree with Ann. Huge mistake and missed opportunity.
Ann's choice, Janice Rodgers-Brown. Not enough intestinal fortitude in the White House to go with that choice.
Can't wait for Ann's column on this nomination later this week.
"I was under the impression that a background in Constitutional law or judicial experience was a plus...though not necessarily a requirement."
O'Connor, Kennedy, Souter, Breyer, and Ginsburg all meet that criterion, and look where it got us.

Anyone who can, in three brief sentences, castrate the entire "ban guns FOR THE CHIL-DREN!" argument is (a) very smart and (b) writes very well.

Given that none of the other conservatives have ever touched on RKBA in their writings...Miers IS the best qualified right now.
You do realize who you are quoting don’t you? And while that does not make it untrue it certainly diminishes the credibility.
I will agree that there are times that a fight is necessary; I will even agree that at times it could be necessary to lose a battle to win the war – I am not convinced this is one of those times.
The base is the base, not some monolithic silent majority that will sweep away all opposition. A base, by definition, is something that is built upon, it is not, in and of itself, enough to win elections. I want to win. I do not want the history books to read Bush, Clinton, Bush, Clinton. If some conservatives abandon the party because of this nomination they are, by default, electing Hillary. In my opinion the nomination of Harriet Miers does not warrant that.
It's always good to remind voters that Democrats are the party of abortion, sodomy and atheism, and nothing presents an opportunity to do so like a Supreme Court nomination.

Right now I am a little worried because Senator Harry Reid and many other DemoRats are saying she is the only one on Bush's short list that would not have been filibustered. Hmm...what makes "dingy" Harry happy usually makes me sad and vice versa. Like I said, I hope you are correct.
I hope she is in the Scalia and Thomas mold. Maybe Dubya has fooled us all again. However, it bothers me that Senator Harry Reid and other DemoRats said that HM is one of only two on Bush's short list that would not have been filibustered. That sounds like he let the DemoRats and RINOS make his pick. I hope my gut feeling on this is wrong. I still can not figure out why he did not nominate Janice Rogers Brown?

I hope you are right but my "gut" feeling feels pretty bad right now. I just feel terrible right now. Dubya could have nominated ten other well qualified conservative jurists with proven track records. He chose the candidate "Dingy" Harry recommended. That is a scary thought.

I look forward to Harry and Chuckie singing glowing responses about Miers ... as NARL and the NOW Gals are out waiting in the hall for them

I do not know if it is a shame or not. Mark Levin has stated this is a lousy choice. I heard Ann yesterday on Sean Hannity's program. Stated that Miers will make Joe Biden finally look like a Constitutional scholar. Over the last several years, you can tell she - Coulter - is disillusioned of President Bush. In a way, I am also. I believe he has squandered opportunities to squash the Dems like a bug and ensure the safety of the United States. My three disappointments - (1) the border - (2) the War on Terror - we should have rolled into these countries and took control. There should be no talking about nukes in Iran because we should be in there already. I just have the sinking feeling that without a full effort, we will end up limping out of the Middle East. A shame really. - (3) these last two judge picks. Especially this last one.
And since then, she has spent her very expensive Cornell legal education dropping snappy one-liners on TV shows and making a career out of writing controversial books.
Ann Coulter's success rests on the shoulders of women like Harriet Miers, who pioneered in the legal profession when most women were not accepted in the professions. I would stack Miers' career accomplishments up against Ann Coulter's any day of the week.
And more to the point, why should her opinion be more valued than the President's? HE is the one charged with picking a nominee, not a gaggle of pundits.
Suit yourself. I don't see a lot of intellect there for your to hang your hat on, just a lot of noise, but it's your choice.

Actually, if you look back, I haven't expressed any opinion at all on whether Miers was a good choice or not. My opinions here have been objections to this notion that Ann Coulter is somehow especially qualified, either as a political pundit or legal expert, to pass judgement, or that her judgement, once passed, is especially worth listening to. It is not - Ann Coulter has no intellect to speak of. She is a mouth, who specializes in selling books by saying things carefully calculated to be outrageous to a certain segment of the population, while simultaneously designed to tell another segment the sorts of things they desperately want to hear.
As a result, she is worthless as a pundit, because she is far too busy feeding red meat to her audience to ever manage anything like an objective analysis of the political landscape. As a legal expert, she has no particular expertise, as indicated by her largely undistinguished (and brief) legal career - this is opposed to groups such as the ACLJ and the Federalist Society, composed of actual practicing lawyers and legal scholars, who have offered their endorsement of this nomination.
Basically, Miers wasn't my first choice either. But I'll be goddamned if I'm going to mistake Ann Coulter for some sort of expert on anything other than maybe selling books. You wanna circle her little boat and whip yourself into a frenzy every time she throws a little chum in the water, be my guest, but I'm not interested.
I think I'm seeing a patter to those screaming at the President.
People with little to make them happy in their own lives are expecting the President to fulfill their lives for them.
Ann, Laura, Rush, George Will who thought the contitution ought to be changed so Gennifer Granholm could run for President.

As for Levin, he's done nothing but refer to his book, over and over and over. I guess he didn't make it on the best seller list as long as he would have liked.
This is our President and I don't see our elites bashing him as any different than the elected officials bashing the President on the war.
It hurts the country, the troops, and is unproductive on every level.

That I hadn't heard. I did hear Senator Reid's statments that can be taken as "Ms. Miers is not on the DEM's 'must filibuster' list," but I haven't read a summary of the names that were on the 'must filibuster' list. I'm sure there were some, he did say that. I just don't recall the names he divulged.
Miers may be a fine choice.
But the reality is that Harry Ried is running the country. Because Bush lets him.
My reasons for voting for Bush have not resulted in much:
1. WOT - Foreign = A
2. WOT - Domestic = C-
3. Social Security Reform = D+
4. Smaller Government = F
5. USSC Picks = C-
6. Curtail Abortion = C-

Harry Reid is a liar.
Reid is trying to split the conservatives by pretending that he is happy with Miers. He even made it a point to say she had donated to Gore (we know the truth of that, it was in '88 when he ran for Prez as a DLC-type, pro-life Dem, and it was her FIRM that donated) and that spoke well of her. We are supposed to think that wink wink, Harry knows somehow that she is a lib, or at least not the strict constructionist Bush he absolutely knows her to be.
I am not the fool Harry Reid thinks I am. However, looks like his ploy is working with many, many who claim to be on our side.
