Good find. Of course, this is Bush's fault too. But with evacuation procedures like that, it's no surprise to see pictures like this:

I guess some folks didn't get the memo.

Some people have trusted their lives to the government. Why wouldn't they leave it to them in a crisis, too?

"If you need a ride, try to go with a neighbor, friend, or relative. "

This is the part that sort of gets me. We constantly hear about the people without cars who rely on public transportation. Before the storm hit you have every lane in every highway filled with cars leaving the city. Why not get a ride? Have them drop you off pretty much anyplace out of the evacuation zone. Maybe I'm being a tad idealistic (I do that from time to time) but I personally would have a hard time turning down someone who was asking for a ride, assuming i had room.
Just drop them off at pretty much any church or homeless shelter or red cross center, etc.

A transistor radio, flashlights and plenty of batteries is essential. On one of the talking head shows, it was said that because of power outages, if you did not have a radio you could not have been aware of the levee failures until your house became inundated. The water rose so fast, there was little time to make a logical plan of escape.

Incompetence and lack of leadership at the local level.

Failure from the beginning from the police to execute a command and control policy.

Failure of the Gov to order up the national guard.

Liberal cleptocracy in action.

Well lookie here. The City of New Orleans DID have a plan. It was every man for himself.

This is SHOCKINGLY inadequate. A third grader could provide for a better plan. Do NOT lose this.

Backho - this MUST be added to the list of archived articles for Katrina. And thank you again for all your work on these archives.

Someone needs to capture this website before they take it down.

Don't know how to do that or I would.

Thanks.

Look at the rest of this NOLA link, guys. From this portion:

Identify in advance an adequate storage location at minimum safe distance. - Learn alternate evacuation routes and utilize them early to avoid dangerous conditions, congestion and denied access to certain highways. - Maintain and inspect vehicles regularly to ensure safe and reliable operation. - Equip vehicles with serviceable emergency items such as spare tires, jacks, lug wrenches, lighting, flares, tie- downs, extra fuel, necessary tools, etc. - Remember! Property considerations are secondar to the health and safety of human lives.

Why the heck wasn't this done?

This is the kind of plan that a high school principal provides for a fire drill. Can you imagine!

Stay calm.

Always a good first step. It's too bad a lot of people stopped paying attention right about there..

And yet, from here:

Ivan exposes flaws in N.O.'s disaster plans (September 19, 2004)

>>>>"If the government asks people to evacuate, the government has some responsibility to provide an option for those people who can't evacuate and are at the whim of Mother Nature," said Joe Cook of the New Orleans ACLU.<<<<

Then, look at Doug's thread:

>>>AP photo showing New Orleans buses partially submerged. Apparently they were not used to evacuate those without cars.<<<<

The New Orleans officials should have written housing codes that mandated inflatable life boats.

They've known for several years that the hurricane cycle was on a dangerous upswing.
Dan Rather could have been a hero instead of a laughingstock, if he had investigated the dangers to New Orleans instead of Bush's military record.

The whole MSM should be ashamed of themselves for having focused on bashing Bush since 2000.

Dang, 8 hours to BR from NO? Those were some heavily filled roads. Normal drive time is something around an hour or so.

I can't believe in a city where half its residents don't have cars that the mayor FAILED to provide any means for these people to leave.
