28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.
Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.
House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."
Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.
The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

Exactly. Granted, a lot of times, hurricanes miss and veer off course at the last minute. This makes people overconfident. All it needs is one bad strike and you're gone.
In the case of NO, a city below sea level, there's no margin of error. But the city and state government just sort of shrugged and carried on as if it were all just a bad dream, probably provoked by GWB.
Now there is disgraceful welfare queen who needs to STFU. If MREs are good enough for the soldiers on the ground, they sure as hell are good enough for her whining ass. I've lived on MREs out in the field, and they are not that bad.
What the hell did she want? The President personally catering her a lobster dinner? These people are pathetic.
That's what I've been saying--just heard Aaron Brown saying that "even if they could have known the devastation there weren't enough buses to get them out". BS--there were enough--they should have had a plan to mobilze them IMMEDIATELY. Now--they are blaming Bush for not finishing repairs on the levee. John Breaux just disputed that claim. CNN is so biased--but I can't handle H&C and Greta--and can't stop watching this whole drama unfold!
Not yet. That's the House's job.
Is this the woman who said an MRE was uneatable?
Thanks....
Your evil twin write this one?
thanks for staying on topic
Pardon my French, but WTF??
this is the real story we have to get out there - how the local and state police, and the political apparatus of the state and city, simply threw in the towel.
they lit a flame under the LSP's ass.....soldier state he hasnt seen the LSP move that quick all week.
The idiot LA Governor took forever to even ask our sleeps in until noon RAT Governor for National Guard troops from Oklahoma.
Oklahoma doesn't have places like the Astrodome. After hearing that doctor on WWL speaking about the hoodlums being on buses bound for the Astrodome, I am in no mood to want them here in OKC. More than willing to help people from MS who are getting little to no publicity.
No rudeness or callousness intended. Events such as this strain all of the people that are suffering, and all of the people helping. Absent the horrible circumstances, it would be callous. When human life versus animal life; in such extraordinary circumstance, gets measured, my belief is unwavering. Sorry.
And in this or any other similar extremity: By whatever means necessary.
I hope the Mayor of Houston is getting some kind of contingency plan in place for who knows what could happen next. The one good thing is most people know that TX has a certain reputation when it comes to guns..and to the Death Penalty.
I know people like that. They exist to complain.
Thanks for making my point without meaning to. At this point, effective communication and supply delivery should have been well-established. It is just incredible to me to read things like this.
I think not frightening the tourists probably was one of the reasons. Several people, more knowledgable about NO than I (that is, they live there and I don't), have made this comment.

Pelican Three Alpha just told Tiger 5 at Pelican Base that the command of the LA State police was notified that LA State Police liason officer walked off the job at the 'dome' and something will be done to help.
DH heard on radio that GWB had increased the funding upon arrival in office for the Army Corps of Engineers to work on the safety of the levees. Am working to verify.
