The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.
The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...
Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

A most insightful post, and likely right on target.
These new CNN reports aren't getting any better. They're looking at someone's online blog (Michael?) ...Water rising dramtically... looting out of control... this is terrible.

Could be water must rise above sea level before it can enter New Orleans? Only been there once and do not know the lay of the land, relying on yall that do. But if sea level is as high as water in New Orleans can go and it is already at sea level then flooding has reached it's highest point and finding a river breach(boil) if one exists will be very dificult.
"Is he still in Crawford?" In fact I saw Air Force one landing at Ontario airport in souther Calif. yesterday...thought crossed my mind that maybe he'd better be somewhere else...
Last I heard they were using Maxwell AFB, AL, for staging.
Not watching him!
What I said was the Governor, nor in my opinion, the Mayor, seem to have had a plan for this scenario.
Not that personnel weren't implementing a plan, as best they could without communication.
But just let me ask you this:
If you knew the Super Dome was going to be used as a "refuge of last resort" and that was part of your plan, don't you think you would have planned for additional toilet facilities, knowing that if the city flooded the sewage wouldn't work.
How hard would it have been to bring in some "porta potties" ahead of time. If you had a plan and saw a hurricane coming, you could have had that done in a matter of hours...but you would have had to plan ahead.
And that is just a minor detail. What about nursing homes that were unmanned? I live in a community that when an evac order is given the nursing homes are the first evacuated to high ground.
Probably the real problem is that they just waited till too late to give evac orders, but beyond that, I really think they didn't believe this could ever happen.
It just seems odd that with this scenario looming all these years that no one has ever laid out a detailed plan of what would happen and when, should a large hurricane be bearing down on NO.
Anybody catch the URL of that blog (of the man in the office building in the CBD)?
So New Orleans is basically like the Netherlands? Way under sea level, but without the benefit of windmills?
The federal government is going to have to get more involved here- sending in coast guard, navy etc... The magnitude of this disaster is exceeding what can be handled on a state level, especially a small state like Louisiana. The standard FEMA intervention will fall short given the scope and time constraints of the evacuation. Louisiana's population in just 4,468,976, and the greater New Orleans area has 1,337,726 people or about a third of the state's population not including the other affected communities. This population is mostly displaced and the remainder trapped. The U.S. has never had disaster of this magnitude happen to a city of this size before
They should have been there by this morning......no later!
I'm in SC, at one station in Augusta, GA prices went up 18 cents this afternoon in one jump. I don't know if the price actually jumped that much or if there is some advantage being taken.
Of course a lot of people around here were mocking those seasonal predictions.
**They need to start moving people to one of several decomissioned Army bases. They are essentially small self suffient cities and would make good safe temporary housing.**
I'm SURE That is what they have in mind, as well as University Campuses, etc, but you are talking about a HUGE logistical task, that will take WEEKS to implement...
48 hours in, and they STILL have just over 100 small boats doing rescues, and I'm betting they are having fuel and mechanical issues with even those...
