The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

"and got into a small sailboat tied in the back yard where they rode it out"

People ask me all the time if I want to sell my J-24 sitting in front of my house. I don't race her anymore but I think I'll keep her as my personal refuge of last resort. She is a very very good boat.

Another possibility, and this is just a WAG, is that the Bonne Carret (sp?) spillway is open between the river and the SW side of the lake, perhaps keeping the lake above sea level at the point where the 17th St. canal intersects? That spillway area had lots of water driven into it by the wind, and could likely been at a higher level than the lake and last to drain. So if they opened the spillway as a relief valve for the river, it still might stay high.

Also, the levees on the west side next to the spillway are only 10' and 11', so perhaps that is an overtop point that hasn't been reported? The 17th st. overtopping didn't get reported until 14+ hours after it first occured yesterday morning, though perhaps because the breach didn't take place until after dark.

Unrelated thought, am wondering if another nuisance is sunburn now for those guards and prisoners evac'd from the prison and sitting out there in the sun.

"Where is the President"
"Still on vacation?"
"Why giving a speech on WWII in San Diego"

"With his poll numbers you'd think he'd react quicker"

Honestly it was just jaw dropping. I think even Wolfie was stunned by the whole thing.

We have had buckets here just east of indianapolis. And I mean buckets...the sump started up with regular pumping several hours ago and it is going to be hefting water all night..that is for sure.

It has been dark...so windy leaves are all over the ground...and if this is Katrina after days onland...and a thousand miles from the gulf...MY GOSH...WHAT WAS THIS STORM LIKE UP CLOSE AT A
CAT 4?"

I'm NW of Indy and my pong usually goes up 6 inches per inch of rain received. It hasn't gone up even an inch yet. Most all the rain missed here.

The county count for flood warnings has risen to 14 now.

At the suggestion of several people on the Live Thread, and in response to several FReepers who wish to offer their homes up for those who have been left homeless by this storm, I have posted the Hurricane Katrina HOUSING Thread. Please see that thread if you have room to house individuals or families left homeless by this devastating storm. I will be mapping the locations of the offered housing as I mapped the locations of the FReepers in the path of the storm.

Except that lake is fed by the Gulf. Not a good thing.

Indeed. But the river is obviously higher than the gulf, and has a very powerful current to go with it. Far worse for NO if the river breaks through.

I wish FOX had better coverage I'd switch back.

I do too, but Neil Cavuto's interview with some pinhead chairman of some oddball organization called "No Tax Dollars to New Orleans" or some such nonsense was spouting off a bunch of selfish claptrap. There was probably just a smidgen I agreed with, but on the whole, he was "way out there".

I think it's the best way to make something out of a bad situation and keep the people calm and out of the way while they survey what is really going on here... they can't keep 70,000 or more people in the superdome for long with 120 restrooms.
