The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

America needs that port.
that port requires workers.
those workers require homes, food, living infrastructure.
such living infrastructure requires a city.
thus, the city of New Orleans wil be rebuilt, in some manner or another.

Most stations have 2-3 day supply. A 1 day boycott would,'t change deliver schedules much, if at all.

I'm very impressed with Gov. Perry of Texas.

Yep, while Governor Blanco simpers on TV, Perry has been working the phones - the key role of a governor in the early stages of a crisis. The time for non-stop TV interviews is after everyone is rescued and in shelter.

Actually, retail gasoline prices are not set based on the price of the tank truck they bought but rather on the cost of the next tank truck to replenish their supply. In other words, the customers subsidize the next tankful, not the stores. They cannot afford to tie that much money up for inventory.

Yesterday's report was that the Mississipi is not navigable and may not be for six months. They are not even sure where the river will run south of New Orleans after all this flooding subsides. That is assuming that it does in the areas south and east of the city.

Perhaps you should inform yourself on the number of refineries in the Gulf Coast area. This is not made-up. The two major pipelines moving gasoline to the northeast and midwest markets were shut down due to this hurricane. When gas stops moving, shortages happen. Ditto when refineries shut down.

The cost to produce a gallon of gas has not doubled in the last five years. But the retail price has doubled, even before this storm. Now the storm becomes another excuse for gouging even more.

Right now, since the base version comes with wood furniture, the BATF thinks it's a hunting/sporting shotgun.

alternative:
use freight containers.
hack the tops off, tar the door-ends, load them with some ballast, air-drop 'em into position using tractors or baots with guy-lines to keep 'em stable, then air-drop more ballast in them and sink them in place.
there are hundreds of freight containers available for use over on the Jackson Avenue docks - the HQ yard of Coastal Cargo Inc has more than enough all on its own to do the job.

Floating the city's dead

Wednesday, 10:46 p.m.

WWL-TV reporter Karen Swensen related a particularly sad tale from a region overflowing with sad tales.

One New Orleans woman waded through the streets of the city, trying to get her husband to Charity Hospital. He had died earlier and she floated his body through the inundated streets on a door that dome off their home.

Everybody and their brother is filling up their tanks given the widely publicized 20 cent plus rise in rates. That brings in the next truck of expensive fuel sooner. Let's say (using made-up numbers) that the average gas tank nationwide is 25% full but now 50% full based on people keeping topped off. That spike in demand will cause a quick change of rates even if the supply was undamaged.
