The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

Do you know where they sent the college students?

I heard last night that they sent 400 students from Tulane to another University. I don't remember which one.

yanno... ROMANS somehow managed such feats of engineering in hostile land under combat conditions using musclepower alone.

I found where they are asking people to not self-dispatch. I may stop by the Red Cross in my area or the Salvation Army and add myself to a list to help if I can.

Makes sense. They need to keep some kind of orderly control down there.

(from email)
Team PA,

Navy leadership is sincerely concerned for our Sailors and their family members in the areas affected by Hurricane Katrina. In light of the communication difficulties created by the hurricane, BUPERS has set up a 24 hour helpline for both Sailors and families to call for information regarding their loved ones.

The number is 1-877-414-5358

This line will be staffed 24 hours by active duty Navy volunteers and will have connectivity with Navy, FEMA and other government agencies. They will try their very best to answer questions regarding the status of Navy family members, but please be aware that communication in the region is still inconsistent.

Actually, retail gasoline prices are not set based on the price of the tank truck they bought but rather on the cost of the next tank truck to replenish their supply. In other words, the customers subsidize the next tankful, not the stores. They cannot afford to tie that much money up for inventory.

Actually, they don't seem to have any more problems than a pump does with that.

I've dumped ten mags through mine in quick succession, never had a melting problem except with some *really* cheap Walmart Winchester that didn't like my pump much either.

Looks like this guy has stolen some beer.

This leads me to another question.. If New Orleans is below the Sea level, and this could happen again. Then why are we going to rebuild it?

They're telling us to expect $3.00+ by the end of the week.

It's going to be earlier than that. Gas futures are trading at $2.6900 right now (up $0.2155 from yesterday's close and a full penny from when I first started this). Add to that taxes, environmental fees, transportation costs, in certain areas "boutique"-ing, and in states like Wisconsin, a mandated minimum markup.

It's almost as bad on the natural gas side (you know, the fuel source the envirowhackos want everything to be on). Those futures are up better than 3%.

Rising prices caused me to fill up my tanks before they go up even more. It's gouging, period.

I guess you don't understand economics. Try reading Walter Williams sometime.

Do you not think there is a serious crisis in supply happening in this country? Do you think supply has any relation to demand and price?

If the station operators did not react to the market, they would soon be out of business.

I'm very impressed with Gov. Perry of Texas.

He has arranged for teams of medical doctors to treat refugees from NO. There will also be psychiatrists on hand to help those who have suffered such emotional trauma.

Perry has already talked with teachers about the stress this will put on the educational system in terms of books, teachers, classroom size, etc. He has talked with bus drivers to ensure there will be appropriate transportation. He has talked with the people who provide vouchers for school lunches.

Perry has talked with Gov. Bush to see how they can "bookend" their help to the affected Gulf states.

It was a very, very impressive press conference
