The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

Here ya go:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1472323/posts?page=2374#2374

For future reference, this repeated line by the mayor and governor that "We went to bed Friday night being told it was a Florida storm, and woke up Saturday to find us threatened" to excuse why they waited so long to start the evacuation plan is total bullshit. (excuse my French)

Friday 4pm NO time report from the NWS, warns of a significant shift west, Mississippi landfall (88.5 on the grid, NO is 90), and possible more movement expected (post #388):

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1471043/posts?page=388#388

By at least Friday 6pm computer models were converging on LA (post #478):

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1471043/posts?page=478#478

Turns out those computer models had been run at 2pm (post #526):

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1471043/posts?page=526#526

In fact some computer models run at 7am NO time Friday had predicted a NO hit(post #224):

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1471043/posts?page=224#224

So unless the gov and mayor went to bed Friday afternoon, they knew then that it likely was headed their way.

But wait, lookee here, Blanco declares a state of emergency about 8pm Friday night. Why do that if they were told it was going to be a Florida hurricane? (post #585)

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1471043/posts?page=585#585

Here's my major criticism with her:

1) We all have known for years how bad a direct hit would be, and that it would take 48-72 hours to evac. Why did she not issue or demand that the mayor issue a mandatory evac at the noon Saturday news conference, when there was only 48 hours left? Why did it take Max Mayfield at the NHC frantically calling them both on Saturday night demanding a stepped up evac, and why 12 hours to react to that(and reportedly not until after President Bush had to step in and tell them to?) Why was there not a mandatory shutdown of non-essential businesses on Saturday, or at least on Sunday, so employees who might have feared losing their jobs could be free to evac, and to send a strong message of how serious this was? The number one job of a governor is to protect her citizens' general welfare, and this became a complete failure of leadership.

I'll withhold comment on her actions since it hit, other than to utter disgust and refute her blame game lies.

It is a shame a segment of our country has come to this, but federal troops have been brought in before to restore order and uphold the rights and safety of law abiding citizens.

During the last Los Angeles riots, the National Guard and US Marines from Camp Pendleton were brought in to save the city. Otherwise Los Angeles would have burnt down.

the Governor and Mayor didn't round up every bus in Southern LA

Every government owned bus in the state should have been ordered to NO - city busses, school busses, every 15 passenger white van. This should have been a standing plan for a Cat 3+ storm that is aiming for NO.

It is no secret that NO was at risk, yet there was no real plan. The plans that were in place required 72-48 hours before landfall for evacuation. And yet they waited until 24 hours until detonatin. Just plain stupid.

I wouldn't feel comforted if I was in the Superdome and I heard the only response of the Governor was that she was going to call for a day of Prayer.

NO Mayor gave the evacuation on Sunday morning less than 24 hours before the storm was scheduled to hit.

Hell yes! So it costs them a bit of money, it is going to cost them far more in bad PR,

Money is something most of the airlines don't have. United is in Bankruptcy, Delta will likely file in a few weeks, NW is having to break a union to stay solvent, USAir just got bought out of bankruptcy court, TWA is gone, American might avoid filing if fuel prices drop soon.

Instead, they got their planes clear of the storm (know what a storm can do to a jetliner in flight? Google up what happened to the Southern Air Lines DC-9 in Georgia a few decades ago - it changed forever the way the airlines treat storms.) ANd they gave their ground crews a chance to get their families to safety.

Do they still have Higgins' boats?

I know there's one at the D-Day museum on Lee Circle. I saw it a few months ago.

and tell me that the white Irish in that neighborhood would act any differently

I am from Boston and I am telling you THE WHITE IRISH IN SOUTH BOSTON WOULD ACT DIFFERENTLY AND DID ACT DIFFERENTLY.

During the Blizzard of '78 there was no looting in South Boston.

You are a bigot and a liar if you say differently.

State police colonel now talking about the looting and how they are bringing more people in to help control it. They are not going to tolerate it...but they will arrest them.

They are coordinating now on where to put them.

This is some of what he said yesterday:

Mayor Ray Nagin called the storm “pretty awesome"

“FEMA said give us a list of your needs,” said Nagin, referring to the Federal Emergency Management Agency. “And let me tell you, we’re giving them a hell of a list."

“I think this is a wake-up call for the city and country,” he said."

=======================================

Everything I've heard him say, since his first appearances on the air this past weekend, point to incompetence, including, of course, the evacuation decision. This is HIS JOB.

I'm sure they're already looking on this disaster as a great opportunity for more voter fraud.

I can hear it now. "After all these people have been through, you can't disenfranchise them by demanding voter IDs." With that playing, the out of town bus-ins, the multiple voters, and even the dead will show up at the polls.
