I've added you to the map. Stay safe.

Here's the latest map. The hurricane is making landfall so I zoomed in and the details are more visible. The hi-res reflectivity Radar from NSSL/U of Oklahoma dynamic data layer is broken this morning. Luckily, someone put together a dynamic data layer based upon images from the weather channel. It's not as pretty, it isn't radar but instead enhanced IR satellite images, but the key thing is that it is working. I hope the live radar comes back up this morning.

The problem is that the servers which serve that data upon which the dynamic data layers are totally overloaded. And then the guy that created the excellent and data rich Tropical Data and NHC Model data layer has family in New Orleans and he's worried about them right now and is trying to keep up with them instead of working on the data layer. Who could blame him.

This Google Earth stuff is so new, but it has caught on like wildfire on the Internet, apparently, and we're seeing the servers get overloaded as so many people discover how incredible it is to use this to track a storm.

OK. The NSSL hi-res reflectivity data layer is back up. Here's the latest radar map overlayed on Google Earth with the FReepers who are riding out the storm mapped. (1010 EDT).

Can you do me a favor and ping me to any updates you have on conditions in Hattiesburg?

I just finished my M.S. at USM and have friends that are still there, plus my cousin lives up in Seminary, so any news about what's going on in da 'Burg would be appreciated!

Thanks, and best wishes for you and your in-laws!

Beleive it or not, I am actually at my office in downtown Jackson.

Won't be here for much longer though.

The wind is really picking up now, and our office is closing.

I go to school in Hattiesburg, which is just north of the base. Our RA came around this morning and informed us that classes have been canceled, and that we should probably evacuate if we could. I came back home- home being about forty-five minutes north. They're saying H'burg could have 110 mile an hour winds. I'm afraid South Mississippi's going to get hammered hard. I-59 was thick with traffic; every gas station I passed had lines.

judging from the map, you're pretty close to my folks.

Thanks for pinging me to a thoughtful thread Howlin. I'm feeling a little guilty to see the sunshine here, knowing there are people in harms way down south.

Although Katrina was downgraded to cat 3, roads in Biloxi and Mobile are completely under water and CNN is reporting extensive property damage in New Orleans. Brian Williams (NBC) reported earlier from behind locked doors in the Superdome. (Ordinarily I watch foxnews but seeing Bill Hemmer had me dashing for my remote.)

We left for Montgomery where we are staying in a hotel. I was able to contact our neighbor who stayed. Our house lost all the large oaks and received a foot or two of bayou water. She was not able to get around to see if they hit the house, bit at least the house is still standing.

Oh well we are alive.

Here's the latest map (1018 EDT). I've changed all FReeper icons and colors until the check in and say they're OK. I will change their colors as they check in to show their status. I will not post an updated map for this, but will update the map on the server. That means that THIS MAP in THIS POST will change as it is updated, so everyone will have to keep referring back to THIS POST.

So, it is TIME FOR A ROLL CALL. All gulf coast FReepers please check in if you can. Tell us your status and stay safe. Some of you are still in the path of this storm and some are probably in the thick of it right now.
