Katrina is emerging into the very warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico early this morning after making landfall in SE Florida, then tracking SW. Thus far, she is well ahead of schedule, leaving at least four fatalities in her wake, and well over 1 million without electricity.

What a beautiful baby! Bless her, her mom and dad and all.
;o)
However, with Opal there were some cooler SSTs in the northern Gulf that helped weaken her before landfall.
But right now the Northern Gulf has the warmest SSTs in the Atlantic Basin. And Katrina's moving into them.
Bastardi getting crazy (calling for 910mb - shades of Camille):

If this holds together and goes as the NHC forecasts, this potential Cat 3 storm would be coming ashore about midday Monday on the coast between Panama City and Fort Walton beach (with Eglin AFB somewhat in the crosshairs, LOL). BUT we have all seen these storms have minds of their own.
This means, in my opinion, that AL/MS/FL folks should get their supplies and gas tanks topped off before the mets come out at 5/6 PM and start spilling the beans on this storm.

Do you have water coming into your home?
I watched that thing pound S. Dade for hours and hours. There probably aren't too many farmers left now, but whatever farmland there is has to be lakes. People are boating and jetskiing in the streets there on the video links below.
Would really appreciate knowing more any more news you learn about the damage in the Homestead area .. if you have to chance to find out. I lived there for 25+ years.
She's a Cat. 2, tops winds at 100 mph, and steaming along her treacherous path .. prayers for all in her way. Just kills me to think about it going to the centeral Panhandle .. again. Those poor souls, God bless them all.

Some of the best discussion on the internet can be found at that web site. Several forecasters out-perform the NHC on a regular basis.
Glad to see you back on-line ;o) We were acting like spoiled kids yesterday needing you. You've SPOILED US...LOL...
