SMOKERS NOT WELCOME AT WINTHROP BEACH, Maine - Then post a sign!
Maine Smokers Rights ^ | 7-16-05 | D. Brennan

What's up in the town of Winthrop, Maine? SMOKERS NOT WELCOME AT WINTHROP BEACH!

Winthrop proves smoking is not a health issue at all.  But it's all about CON T R O L!

7-16-05 - I was notified of the ridiculous treatment given to one family just because a family member was smoking.

A cop approached the family and told them they would have to leave because this was a "no smoking beach."  The family, as you can see, is not "on" the beach, but on the grassy area.  There were no signs stating that the area was smoke free.  The cop told them that there was a sign, but it was now "gone."

Who pays for the care of Winthrop Beach?  The taxpayers?  People in Maine who smoke are paying well above their fair share of taxes.  Tax payers are also paying for this "cop," who evidently had nothing better to do then harass a family because one of the adults  was smoking.

Rule #11:  Trash, debris or cigarette butts must be placed in trash containers.

The only signs that were posted.  If Winthrop wants a smoke free beach, they need to get their act together and POST said signs!  NOW!

See how bans have nothing to do with health and everything to do with control.

If you think this is an isolated incident, this is one of the topics at the newsletter!

Smoking On Beaches

Litter? There are already litter laws... etc... like from the conference notes:

Excuse my faux paux!

I've been busy working in GEO City today and since they do not allow remote loading, I am now loading the pictures in my host file that DOES allow remote loading.

Sorry about this. Please don't beat me! :)

It's NEVER been about health and always about control.

How many times have we seen gnatzi's post saying they hate leaving a smoky bar smelling of smoke..

They don't like the smell and feel it should be banned.I can think of a lot of things that I don't like but I have a perfect solution-----I avoid them.Seems like a no brainer to me.

I would love the have them ban all smoking and be done with it,but as you've said many times, the need our money.

Boy, if this doesn't show that it's about control, then nothing will!  I was happy these people wrote to me.

The cop told them "Well, there used to be a sign."  Well, post another one then!  Why let unsuspecting smokers go in?  So the cop can look busy? heh!

Aye-yuh!
Maine is just another nanny state. Every day the Baldacci types are taking away basic rights that people used to have so that people will be controlled like a Hitler run regieme.
On the other hand, Maine taxes are the highest in the country, especially cigatette texes. The Indian tribes could make a bundle selling cigarettes without state taxes if they would take advantage of the situation. No doubt Baldacci would try to supress indian cig sales if they did.

Well, Baldy has already put a monkey wrench into the Reservations in Maine over selling tax free cigarettes.  I haven't heard anymore, so it's been swept under a rug or Baldy really did stop our Reservations from selling cigarettes.

Baldacci is a little Hitler and it's past time for him to GO!

Well, maybe a bit about health? There've been a couple of times at the beach when I've stepped on a lit cigarette and burned my foot. I can't believe I'm the only one.

Well, I'm not saying it's impossible, but I never heard of your experience from anyone else in all my life, either.

I can show you the scars :)

But just out of curiosity, where does one dispose of a ciggie while on the beach?

I guess it depends on where you grew up and how often you went to the beach. Me? Los Angeles. Went to the beach often, and stepped on many hot cig butts.

I would make an ash tray out of a clam shell and then throw the whole thing in the garbage can when I would leave at the end of day.

We used to spend every summer at the beach when I was a teenager.  And that was back in the days where everyone smoked.  And I still can't remember butts all over the beach like the anti's are trying to pin on us today.  Can you?

I can't remember butts being a problem on a beach.

I do know that I would not like to see if someone dumped their car ashtrays in a mall parking lot.  But that goes on even today.

Perhaps you're one of the very few responsible smokers who carry out your butts. Being a former smoker I know that the vast majority of smokers merely snuff them out and bury them in the sand.

Well, I usually use a Coke can.  But if you don't have one, you can just put the cigarette out and throw it into the trash receptacle that is provided.

Non-smokers have rights too.

I'm glad that Maine enacted this ordinance. I hope the whole country follows suit.

I am not against smokers, just the obnoxious, toxic substance that they expel from their lungs into the faces of others.

Unless you can confine your smoke such that it does not impinge on the rights of others, your so-called smoking rights end where the noses of others begin.

BUMP

Well, if I even stepped on "one," that would be enough for me to start wearing flip flops.  :)

From when I was 8 years old up to 14? I use to be on the beach at 6am every morning every summer to clean it.

There were NOT a lot of cigarette butts. That was the least of the trash I would find.

And guess what? I bet YOU have habits that I would find disgusting.
