Reel Mixup Leaves N.J. Star Wars Fans Watching Japanese Version

EATONTOWN, N.J. -- Star Wars "Episode III -- Revenge of the Sith" got lost in translation for some fans at a movie theater in Eatontown.

It seems there was a reel mix-up and at some point in the film Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi started to speak Japanese.

People at the Loews Cineplex at Monmouth Mall chanted, "stop the movie, stop the movie" during Wednesday's midnight premiere.

The lights came on and the manager told the audience that the movie would not continue.

Loews marketing senior vice president John McCauley said the audience was offered to squeeze into other theaters, get a pass for another showing or receive a refund.

It was not known how the Japanese version was spliced in.

We were offered a refund last night (which I took) because the film was horribly out of focus for 3/4s of the movie. The place was run by a bunch of 16 year olds with NO adult supervision. Being among 300 Star Wars geeks ready to explode is not a pleasant place to find yourself, I can tell you.

I *thought* I felt a disturbance in the Force. It was as though hundreds of voices suddenly screamed out: "FOCUS!!!"

What's the difference, from all of the reviews the dialogue was not understandable anyway...

"Proof that Lucas stole the concept from The Akira Kurosawa samurai films!!!"

And the fact that Carrie Fisher says so in an interview on my re-release box set. :)

At out local theater last night I saw 2 employees. One taking tickets and ONE selling concessions. They didn't let us in the theater until about 10 minutes before start and the choices were: Buy refreshments or miss the beginning of the movie. Sad. Now I remember why the last movie I went to the theater to see was Episode II.

If you really want a good laugh, see if you can find a Woody Allen film called "What's Up, Tiger Lily?"

He took a Japanese spy thriller that was a knock-off of a James Bond movie and dubbed his own English dialogue over it. The whole thing was ingenious -- especially because he made his outlandish, ridiculous lines match the Japanese characters' movements and expressions almost perfectly.

Typical Scene . . .

A group of Japanese law enforcement officials are gathered around a table discussing their plan to arrest a major criminal in the case. A large map of some kind is laid out on the table before them. One of them gets up, points at something on the map, and says something to the group. The guy across the table stands up, leans over the table, looks at the spot on the map where the first one was pointing. His face suddenly lights up with a look of shock and awe, and he excitedly says something to the first one, who seems to get angry with him and passes him off with a dismissive gesture.

The dialogue that Woody Allen dubbed over that scene was something like this:

Officer #1 (standing up and pointing to the middle of the map): "This is where Mr. Wong now lives, and he must be captured immediately!"

Officer #2 (stands up and looks at the map, then looks at Officer #1 in shock): "Holy sh!t -- YOU MEAN MR. WONG IS LIVING INSIDE THIS PIECE OF PAPER?!?!"

Officer #1 (waving his hand at Officer #2 as if to tell him to sit down and shut up): "No, you moron -- this is a map of the town where he lives!"

Especially when they carry plastic light sabers with them. ;)

The old TV series "Wiseguy" had an episode where Jerry Lewis was the owner of a clothing company and confronted a Chinese sweatshop owner as follows. (If you recall the Chinese restraurant episode of Seinfeld, it was the same actor who portrayed the maitre de).
Jerry Lewis: "Are you Huang?"
Sweatshop owner looks down toward waist: "I can't complain!"
I totally lost it. I apologize for not doing it justice.
