Tiberias dig unearths very rare marble floor

By Eli Ashkenazi

A marble floor dating from the first century CE was unearthed during this season's excavations of ancient Tiberias.

According to archaeologist Professor Yizhar Hirschfeld, director of the three-week dig that ended yesterday, the floor is apparently a remnant of a pavement in the palace of Herod Antipas, son of Herod the Great, who ruled the Galilee from 4 BCE to 38 CE.

"I am so sick of CE being shoved down our throats."

Go complain to Israel. Maybe you can get them to use AD and BC and get them to accept Christ in the process.

"Well that journalism update didn't take long to take hold. Amazing how far PC will go to eliminate religion from history."

Indeed? This is an Israeli news source, you see. They don't do Christ. While they have their own calendar, but in most situations, use BCE and CE to designate the year.

I think you rather jumped the gun on this one, without putting on your thinking cap.

So Christians can't and don't use the term January? That month is named after Janus, a pagan God. What about Saturday, July, and August? Jews go to see Raquel Welsh in 1,000,000 BC not 1,000,000 BCE. Lots of Jews in America use BC and AD in common usage and the issue at hand is the growing use here, not in Israel.

It looked like we were all talking about the use in this article being PC, etc. The author is Israeli.

Also, your comparison to January is silly. Saying AD as in Ano Domini mean in the year of our lord. So by saying AD you are basically saying Jesus is your lord. Saying January is not the same thing. You are just calling something names after a god not saying he is your god. Just like saying a planet's name.

Okay...might have jumped the gun. But do they disagree that Jesus existed? I don't think they do.

Still don't like to see OUR education system replacing BC and AD with BCE and CE. Maybe they are doing it because they don't want to acknowledge Christ either.

BTW, can you tell me how to convert from BCE-CE to BC-AD?

"Okay...might have jumped the gun. But do they disagree that Jesus existed? I don't think they do."

I don't have the answer to that question, but even if they do think someone named Jesus existed around that time, why would they change the calendar?

This is another example of how easy it is to forget that not everyone believes as you do. Israel uses BCE and CE. I'm sure other non-Christian countries do the same, as does the international academic community.

If you're going to have a common dating system, it has to be something that doesn't reflect a minority religion, worldwide.

You are aware that Christianity is the religion of less than 1/3 of the world's population, right?

To expect Israel to use BC and AD is to expect way, way too much. Why on Earth should they?

Jews use the BCE/CE dating system.

Actually Jews use the Hebrew dating system, but reference Gregorian dates by BCE/CE

You're wrong on this one. It is a solid comparison. During the French Revolution's heady days they did change the names on the calendar but soon changed back. The abbreviations are just names and most Jews think no more of using AD and BC than Christians do about tossing around the names of Pagan Gods. Most Jews in America go to public schools or secular private schools, not Hebrew schools. Most Jews just don't worry about the names of calendar parts.

Who would strike coins bearing the image of Jesus? Herod? I don't think so. It would have to date from Byzantine or Crusader times.

Use these:

BCE = Before Christian Era
CE = Christian Era

Incorrect. I use BC and AD on occaision, and by no means do I imply what you suggest. BC and AD are merely conventions, not proclamations of faith.

But let's say you're right, and saying BC and AD means a proclamation fo faith. That thus means that non-Christians should NEVER use those terms. It also means that those terms are explicitly religious, and *should* be removed from schoolbooks and replaced.

Careful what you wish for...

It would be very hard to change the days of the week and the names of the months, but why not? Old Roman deities seem to have little place. Let's try this. It would be super easy to understand, and wouldn't offend anyone, since they're just numbers. I say we should go for it:

Firstday = Sunday
Secondday = Monday
Thirdday = Tuesday
Fourthday = Wednesday
Fifthday = Thursday
Sixthday = Friday
Seventhday = Saturday

Similarly, for the months:

Firstmonth
Secondmonth
Thirdmonth
Fourthmonth
Fifthmonth
Sixthmonth
Seventhmonth
Eighthmonth
Ninethmonth
Tenthmonth
Eleventhmonth
Twelftmonth

It's not just Jews who use it, it's all over the History and Discovery channels as well. My step daughter in 10th grade is being taught it too.

Ha! Next it will be metric months.

Already we have October meaning the eighth month, November meaning the ninth month, and December meaning the tenth month but we got em out of order due to Julius and Augustus.
