Police 'Showdown' Averted ['Team of State Agents Were En Route to Seize Terri']
Miami Herald ^ | Sat, Mar. 26, 2005 | CAROL MARBIN MILLER

Posted on 03/25/2005 7:55:28 PM PST by West Coast Conservative

Hours after a judge ordered that Terri Schiavo was not to be removed from her hospice, a team of state agents were en route to seize her and have her feeding tube reinserted -- but they stopped short when local police told them they would enforce the judge's order, The Herald has learned.

Agents of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement told police in Pinellas Park, the small town where Schiavo lies at Hospice Woodside, on Thursday that they were on the way to take her to a hospital to resume her feeding.

For a brief period, local police, who have officers at the hospice to keep protesters out, prepared for what sources called ``a showdown.''

In the end, the squad from the FDLE and the Department of Children & Families backed down, apparently concerned about confronting local police outside the hospice.

''We told them that unless they had the judge with them when they came, they were not going to get in,'' said a source with the local police.

''The FDLE called to say they were en route to the scene,'' said an official with the city police who requested anonymity. ``When the sheriff's department and our department told them they could not enforce their order, they backed off.''

The incident, known only to a few and related to The Herald by three different sources involved in Thursday's events, underscores the intense emotion and murky legal terrain that the Schiavo case has created. It also shows that agencies answering directly to Gov. Jeb Bush had planned to use a wrinkle in Florida law that would have allowed them to legally get around the judge's order. The exception in the law allows public agencies to freeze a judge's order whenever an agency appeals it.

I didn't see him Ben, but let me say this. Any man who actually loved a woman (EVER), would respect her parents far more than this slithering bastard does. He clearly dispises them and that should tell anyone they need to know where his heart truly resides.

I hope this shows that Jeb was serious. He only backed off to avert a state of FL civil war

Exactly.

The glee from the MSM is simple. Bush and the GOP are getting pummeled by this. They are getting it from both sides. The majority of the country is upset that they butted in to start with and the Social conservatives are slamming them for not doing enough. The Dems needed an opening to stop the GOP momentum and now that they have it, their accomplices in the media are pouring it on.

Sorry, I don't think it was the right call for Jeb to make. A crime is being committed in that building under the color of law. If local law enforcement is really willing to confront other law enforcement with violence to uphold this judge, my only hope would be that the state guy's are better armed and DEADLY accurate. Jeb just succumbed to a threat that I doubt the locals would have backed up anyway.

Don't play poker, Jeb, because you can't figure a bluff.

The Pinellas City Poloce Dept and the County Sheriffs Dept. are as guilty of this Murder as the Judge, the 11th Curcuit Ct , the 11th Court of Appeals and the Supreme Ct.

Tonight I saw the sheriff on Fox News. The woman, not lady, answered Gretta's quesions with very simple answers, and appeared to have an IQ of 80. Okay, maybe her's was 85.

I hope this shows that Jeb was serious. He only backed off to avert a state of FL civil war. Those who think Jeb was not going to act are wrong, he only backed off to avert a major firefight over Terri. I know some would still want that, but I think Jeb made the right call in the end.

Bull crap. There was not going to be a fire-fight. You've watched too many movies. This story is either complete BS or a bluff that caused Jeb to blink. Sad when a so-called leader is made to look so pathetic in public.

The Left may be winning this battle, but we're going to turn the tables on them later using this issue and we're going to WIN the war for the future of America.

"''We told them that unless they had the judge with them when they came, they were not going to get in,'' said a source with the local police."

This was a bluff, a big fat red herring by Governor Jeb Bush to make it appear he did everything possible. All Jeb needed to do, if he were serious, was to send in the State Police along with the Florida National Guard, WITH AN ORDER FROM THE STATE'S HIGHEST OFFICIAL, himself, to remove Terri from the hospice. The local cops would have backed down like the cowards they truly are.

(And please don't tell me "they're just doing their job"). That was the Nazi excuse for killing innocent Jews. Frankly, I'd prefer to loose my job as a police officer if it came down to my being ordered to help starve an innocent woman to death. How can these people live with being part of this monstrous act???

George Felos, Michael Schiavo's attorney, said he does not think DCF officials knew of the window of opportunity they had created until well after they filed their appeal.

''Frankly, I don't believe when they filed their notice of appeal they realized that that gave them an automatic stay,'' Felos said. ``When we filed our motion to vacate the automatic stay . . . they realized they had a short window of opportunity and they wanted to extend that as long as they could.

``I believe that as soon as DCF knew they had an opportunity, they were mobilizing to take advantage of it, without a doubt.''

Words fail me.

Shoot...missed it. Was gonna predict that mere minutes would be required before so-called "conservatives" were piping up to express disappointment that local authority was not overrun by higher levels of government.

Have you seen the thread that outlines the links between judge Greer and the board of directors for the hospice?

Someone needs to pay with their life if Terri is taken.

This isn't about Terry any longer; It is now about dismantling a rogue and discredited judiciary. I want those responsible in jail for the rest of their lives. Starting with Judge Greer.

"Bet those local police are damn proud of themselves. A real feather in their caps. Maybe they'll get a friggin' medal for their bravery. Service above and beyond the norm."

This is sort of drastic, and I hate to say this (especially since I have quite a few friends who are cops), but those of you in that county could try calling your local FOP lodges and let them know in no uncertain terms that they aren't ever seeing another cent from you again.

The Gov can not punish someone for following an illegal order......there was no basis in the law for the state agents to take over without court order........no matter how heart wrenching or putrid this outcome is.....
