Just now on his radio show...says we taken over by fringe people
Thanks. So what is that darn rule about proving negatives?
Other sites could not survive the diversity of FR. Freedom is hard work. Really, it's ugly and hard and I love it.
Very good link.
I enjoy stimulating debate on this forum. It does force a person to research their position and become informed on the topic they are discussing.
If we choose to try to B.S. our way thru a topic around here, we can be sure that someone with expertise in that field will challenge us on it. Some brutally, some comically. And you'd better watch your spelling and grammar also! And a person is wise to get a sense of humor about themselves.
Do we debate? Yes. Do some attack rather than debate? Yes. But alot of us find our own ways of handling it.
Some days I choose to not turn my attention toward the one negative comment, when there are hundreds of positive things to absorb here.
Other days, I might respond to a personal attack. I always try to stay on topic.(okay, except when the thread gets silly) Sometimes doing that can be more frustrating to the personal attackers than responding to their level.
There are so many brilliant people here, who have so much information to share. It's astounding what is available to me at this website.
I can't imagine with the thousands of posters here that ANYONE would expect an insult free environment. Get a small group of people together anywhere (like my family) and you WILL have disagreements, some of which will not be very nice.
That said, I find FR to be very civil and very tame for a website, where people comment from the safety of their keyboard. I have seen more vicious attacks and heard more vicious comments in the workplace!
Cheers to FR!
I agree. And who says Freepers do not show compassion? Guess I am not ready yet. But as I said, I never watch Hannity anyway, and I do spend a lot of time here at Free Republic.
Not quite true.
I've been speaking in defense of Hannity, while I slammed Noonan. Though I never descended to personal insults I did and still do believe jealousy was a motivator for those columns.>>>
Yeah, I have no problem with disagreeing with Peggy, or any other conservative or liberal. I disagreed with her "too much God" criticisms myself. I am mostly referring to how reactions to things over here go rocketing into the emotional ionosphere. If these guys were prelates in a church, we would be deluged with "conservative heresy" trials, excommunications and maybe worse.
Myself, I find Sean's stuff self aggrandizing, and I think trying to contrast FR to be a cheap shot. So what?
Thank you for your post.
Thank you very much Gondring. I appreciate your reply. Since this is such a politically charged issue, it's the scientists' opinions which should have the most weight.
Far from being dumbed down, we were taught principles which have stayed with us.
(You can't prove a negative was my expression, not the teachers--didn't realizew how I contradicted myself on that one DUH!)
To simplify: (not geometry, but same principle)
Prove you are not 75 years old.
The easy way, of course is pull out the license and say "I was born in 1954 which makes me 50" I just proved I was not 75 years old.
In geometry class I did not prove I was not 75 years old.
I proved I was greater than or less than 75 years old.
I was not dumbed down by any stretch of the imagination. Looking back, I realize it was the logical process we were being taught.
Your example:
If A, then B.
Not B.
Therefore, not A.
What is not in your problem is how you arrived at "not B"
You proved C.
I am a nurse and have done many, many dosage calculations in my career. Instead of being dumbed down, I always say a prayer of "Thanks" to the excellent teachers I had in algebra and geometry when faced with a complicated dosage calculation.
I learned how to set the problem up, how to solve it, & how to check my answer. Taking shortcuts instead of using a logical process would have made for alot of medication errors. (Okay, maybe I could call the pharmacy, but they do not allow you to call the pharmacy when taking an exam.)
BTW--forgot add this.
I am not an abtract thinker in any walk of life. For me to master anything, I must see it. I cannot do simple math calculations in my head...it has to be on paper. So it isn't that I cannot do it. It is how I do it.
For example, I am making window cornices in my home and putting up trim using many miter joints. Even after all I have done, I cannot go to the miter saw and automatically position it for an inside or outside angle. I must to place the blade on the wood each so that I can confirm the direction of the cut. So for people like me, logical shortcuts are dangerous and costly. LOL! Had I learned those principles in high school I would have been dumbed down.
Glad you like my freep name....
agree to 3110
Vive Free Republic!
(That's the *cough* French *cough* version)
;-)
ROFL! I think you are right!
Personality aside, I still have a great deal of respect for him for what he contributed in the reelection of our president.
Hey, you said Ann Coulter! Where are the pics?
I think for the most part the air has cleared.
