"Is anyone really surprised that another Clinton confidante has been indicted?" said Stephen Minarik, referring to the indictment of David Rosen, who served as Hillary Clinton's finance director in her 2000 Senate race.

The New York State Republican Party chairman added: "Hillary Clinton's public life reads like an instruction manual for breaking the rules. New Yorkers deserve better.

The remarks by Minarik are but the opening salvo in a ramping up campaign to frustrate her reelection to the Senate and even nix a potential presidential bid by Clinton in 2008, says a report in the NY Daily News.

Pundits are looking for GOP sappers to use the Rosen indictment to refresh memories of old Clinton scandals like Travelgate and Whitewater.

But University of Virginia political science Prof. Larry Sabato opined that damage control should be easy enough for Clinton:

"She would have to have been involved in some way, or been clearly negligent. And I doubt that that's the case."

Clintonista's Indictment Kept Secret for a Year!

Though Hillary Clinton's former finance chairman David Rosen was actually indicted in 2003, the Bush administration kept it secret till the indictment was unsealed late Friday, a move that spared the former first couple and the Democratic Party significant embarrassment during the height of the 2004 presidential campaign.

"The indictment was handed down more than a year ago," the Los Angeles Times reported Saturday.

Citing "sources familiar with the probe," the Times said the Bush Justice Department decided that any criminal charges would not be made public until after last fall's presidential election for fear they would be seen as a politically tainted vendetta by the Bush Administration."
While under secret federal indictment, Rosen was able to continue working for top Democrats throughout the long presidential campaign, eventually joining the campaign staff of Clinton protege, Gen. Wesley Clark, who launched his own presidential bid on the advice of the former first couple.

The decision to keep the politically awkward indictment under wraps allowed Mr. and Mrs. Clinton to assume high profile roles attacking President Bush on the Iraq war, as well as a whole range of domestic issues, without having to answer questions about their role in Rosen's case.

In Sept. 2003, Mrs. Clinton went so far as to accuse the White House of corruption, saying Bush officials had deliberately covered up unhealthy air quality at Ground Zero in the days after the 9/11 attacks.

In a measure of the extraordinary sensitivity with which Bush officials handled the Clinton-related case, the Times said the Rosen probe was "being directed by federal prosecutors with the Public Integrity Section at the Justice Department's headquarters in Washington, who specialize in this type of case."

Although the 10-page indictment does not indicate whether others, including the Clintons, were suspected of wrongdoing, Justice Department spokesman Bryan Sierra told the Times, "All we can say is that there are no additional subjects at this time."

But a key witness in the case has alleged that Hillary Clinton had guilty knowledge of concealed campaign contributions for an Aug. 12, 2000 fundraiser on behalf of her Senate campaign, which formed the basis for Rosen's indictment.

Hollywood producer Peter Paul, who funded the star-studded Los Angeles gala, has claimed that Mrs. Clinton personally negotiated "the largest payment for the event that I underwrote."

Paul and the his lawfirm Judicial Watch have maintained since 2001 that Mrs. Clinton's Senate campaign deliberately undereported nearly $2 million in in-kind contributions he made to cover expenses for the Aug. 2000 event.

Celebrity fundraiser Aaron Tonken, another key figure in the probe, has also suggested that Mrs. Clinton may face legal trouble because of his testimony about work he did for the former first couple.

In a soon-to-be released book that covers his relationship with the Clintons, Tonken says he handed out checks to "certain pols" that were "illegal." And he personally witnessed a "brown bag" stuffed with cash going "someplace it shouldn't."

In 2002 deposition in an unrelated case, Tonken testified: "I'm a star witness against President and Mrs. Clinton. . . . regarding the fundraising activities that I've done on behalf of the Clintons."

Did you notice that the NYTimes didn't cover this story? I mean, there is a reprint of an AP story, but the Times usually is loathe to pull stuff from the wires when they can write their own story their own way. The LA Times... heck, even the NY Post and Newsday threw some reporters at the story, but not the NYT?????

I'm wondering... Didn't the NYTimes have a staff writer to write the story either Friday night or yesterday? Or, did they write a story which didn't make their website?

It's not like there aren't points that Hillary wants to get out. For instance, the indictments started with a person who is accused of stock fraud. And, Rosen's consultancy firm "orchestrated" (LA Times term) an out-of-state fundraiser for the Florida Dems in their effort to beat Jeb
Bush. And, the indictments were handed down a year ago, but only announced on Friday.

The NY Times, in better form, would've scooped the story a year ago, which doubles my interest in why it has received so little attention so far.

Hillary Clinton's Former Campaign Finance Director is Indicted

Jan. 8--WASHINGTON -- A top aide in Sen. Hillary Clinton's 2000 Senate race was indicted Friday on federal charges of filing false documents that allegedly lowballed costs and hid generous assistance in putting on a star-studded Hollywood gala.

The Justice Department alleges that David Ross, Clinton's former campaign finance director, misstated the cost of the fund-raiser to free up more cash for the Democrat's race against former Long Island Republican Rep. Rick Lazio, documents show. Campaign staffers have denied the books were cooked.

Rosen was indicted on four counts of filing false Federal Election Commission reports stemming from an Aug. 12, 2000, fund-raising dinner and concert for Clinton's Senate campaign.

The event, also billed as a tribute to then-President Bill Clinton, featured Paul Anka, Michael Bolton, Toni Braxton, Cher, Melissa Etheridge, Patti LaBelle, Brian McKnight, Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder and Luther Vandross.

Other invited guests included Ted Danson, Michael Douglas, Whoopi Goldberg, Goldie Hawn, Mary Steenburgen, John Travolta and Red Buttons, according to information from the campaign at the time.

David Kendall, the Clintons' scandal lawyer during their White House years, said in a statement he expects the charges won't stick.

"The (Clinton) Senate Campaign Committee has fully cooperated with the investigation," Kendall said. "We trust that when all the facts are in (Rosen) will be cleared."

Rosen's lawyer had no immediate comment.

The feds allege the event cost more than $1.2 million to produce, mostly from in-kind contributions in the form of goods and services, but Rosen knowingly reported only $400,000 to the FEC.

In a related case, convicted felon Peter Paul, a former partner of "Spider-Man" creator Stan Lee, has told authorities he wrote checks to pay for most of the Clinton event. The feds claim he ponied up to try to win a pardon from President Clinton before he left office. Paul's case has been supported by Judicial Watch, a conservative legal group that has pursued Bill Clinton.
