So would this less than honorable discharge also have ended his obligation to the Navy prior to when it was supposed to end?
To: rwfromkansas
Folks.....Chief has proven to be very reliable and not a liar.
Somebody please post a way we can donate some funds to the Chief. He has laid out a lot of money, sweat and time on this.

I don't know anything about how this works, But I had a friend who got in the Navy and his wife cheated on him with another sailor. When he got home he beat the hell out of the guy. He received an "other than Honorable discharge" but was able to have it changed to honorable after 5 years. He said it was no big deal and that they will change it to honorable after a certain amount of time as punishment and that it was his belief that anyone who receives Other than Honorable can get it changed. The Less than honorable and dis-honorable are the only ones permanent. In fact, he re-enlisted and is still in the Navy---But this could be wrong, I have no first hand knowledge The character of any discharge can theoretically be upgraded by an appeal to the appropriate board of military corrections. But by no means is it automatic.
Your friend's situation could have had any number of scenarios. In Kerry's situation, I guarantee he was not court-martialed or we would know about it already -- with very rare exceptions, they are public proceedings. If this latest rumor is true, then it means Kerry got an administrative discharge that got updated by the greatest president this nation has ever known (vvvvommmmmmmit), Jimmy "the Georgia Joke" Carter.

I found it .......thanks....my original post listing the types of discharges had UNDESIREABLE as one type........that is no longer in existence but has been renamed to Other than Honorable. My age is showing.

We can deal with Kerry about VN after he loses the election. And I, for one, want to deal with him. He is/was a despicable representative for an American military man and want him exposed, if only in history, for what he did.

If it was stated anywhere that "he gave aid and comfort to the enemy," the man is simply ineligible to be President, and must be removed from the ballot, even if after the fact.

At this point in the election, I dont think Kerrys discharge would make any difference with the voters. Everyone who thinks Kerrys conduct after the Vietnam War is important has already made up their mind about who they are going to vote for.
The sad thing about it is that for the Democrat party, Kerrys discharge from the Navy is not at all important. Please remember that the Democrat party is nothing but a loose coalition of Godless communists, socialists, criminals, perverts, race-baiters, parasites, opportunists, and the feeble minded, and as such, an Honorable Discharge from the U.S. Navy just has no meaning to them.

This is NOT helpful. Any stories like this near the end of the campaign will be percived as a dirty trick and will backfire. We appear to be ahead in the polls, don't do anything stupid!

Very true. However, it does not carry the stigma of a general or any other than honorable. One of the guys I worked with had a general under honorable, and although he was difficult to pen down on the circumstances, I think he got wind of his wife cheating on him and went over the hill to chase her down. They bounced him, but didn't want to ruin his life, so they went general under honorable.
There are a range of discharges, and even if someone is a problem, there are options to get them out without stigmatizing them for life. An other than honorable, though, means the guy who discharged Kerry wanted to leave a mark. That's assuming, of course, this information is accurate.

You can see an example here from his own website:
John Kerry's After-Action Combat Reports
Note the Records for December and January weren't released. These would impact his Christmas in Cambodia story and the Sampan story.
Even more complicated, months ago he had some reports from earlier Feb and late January pulled off because they conflicted with something in Brinkley's book. Relatively minor compared to the big whoppers he told, though.
