A British reporter says a U.S. journalist in Baghdad told him she wants to see more Iraqis die so President Bush will be thrown out of office in November.
Toby Harnden, Middle East correspondent for the London Daily Telegraph, said he engaged in the conversation while taking a break by the pool at the Al-Hamra Hotel in the Iraqi capital.
In an opinion piece for the Spectator magazine of Britain, Harnden said at poolside he "was accosted by an American magazine journalist of serious accomplishment and impeccable liberal credentials."
The American journalist told Harnden she had been disturbed by his argument that Iraqis were better off now than under Saddam Hussein.
Harnden said he heard from her the usual "script" from antiwar activists, "no WMD, no 'imminent threat' (though the point was to deal with Saddam before such a threat could emerge), a diversion from the hunt for bin Laden, enraging the Arab world, etc."
But the American then came to her point, Hernden said.
"Not only had she 'known' the Iraq war would fail but she considered it essential that it did so because this would ensure that the 'evil' George W. Bush would no longer be running her country.
"Her editors back on the East Coast were giggling, she said, over what a disaster Iraq had turned out to be. 'Lots of us talk about how awful it would be if this worked out.'"
"Startled by her candor," said Herndon, "I asked whether thousands more dead Iraqis would be a good thing."
The British journalist said, "She nodded and mumbled something about Bush needing to go."
He then suggest to her that by this logic another Sept. 11 attack, on about Sept. 11, would be perfect for pushing up John Kerry's poll numbers.
"Well, that's different — that would be Americans," she said, haltingly, according to Harnden. "I guess I'm a bit of an isolationist."
In his column, Harnden then commented on the "moral degeneracy of these sentiments," concluding with:
"Whatever we thought about the war before it was launched, it is imperative that the forces of Arab nationalism and Islamism that now threaten to destroy Iraq are defeated. If America fails in Iraq it will be all of us in the West, not just Bush, who will suffer. But those who would be most in peril, of course, would be the Iraqis, who deserve better than to have their country treated as an electoral playground by the American Left or Right. To wish otherwise is as sick as the grins on the faces of the Abu Ghraib torturers."
To find the likely female correspondent from this story, it can be inferred that "she", being notable and respected, must be at least in her thirty or forties. It should be possible to make a short list of a half dozen or so east coast magazines that cover international events, have the resources to send a journalist overseas and have a reputation as being big left wingers. Visiting each of their web sites and searching for recent Baghdad stories from female staff members it should be possible to narrow the list to two or three likely candidates. I'm open to suggestion on then how to narrow the list down to one name, but it's a start.

Sure sounds like Ann Garrels. Can we pin down her movements to fix her in place and time? That intersection would be close enough to begin a freep campaign. Force her to deny it (or no) on the record. Then prove she's a liar, a traitoress, or both.

I don't see another CW2, it will be far too messy. There is no 'north south' type split. Cities will be battlegrounds. Argentina 1970s, Northern Ireland 1970s, Bosnia 1990s are more likely. Hence DW1.
In this case, a typical "detail turn" would be from radio reporter to magazine reporter.
I think the event happened, but it was not necessarily a magazine reporter.

In order for a DW1 we need the military to step up the plate, take the initiative and govern the nation in the manner it sees best.
I don't mind a "national regeneration" movement along the lines of Franco's Spain or Argentina in the 1970s. The libertarian ideal is so bankrupt and exhausted that I would accept several years of a Franco-style solution to our ideological conflicts.

Welcome to the reality of Liberalism in America. Lunatic Liberals who are 50 and over, have hated America for about 3 decades. Their entire core is based on hating America, conservatives, Christians, Jews who are faithful to their religion and our military. al Querry is a prime example. He rode his hate America Treason to the senate and now is their presidential candidate.
Since GW was sworn, their worse nightmares about him have been coming true. Each day/week/month their pet agendas have been harmed or neutered by our stealth president. They are losing funding for their agendas across the board. Probably a lot of that funding came from the Iraqi Oil for Food scam and their Uncle $oddomite. Who knows how much money Iran is throwing their way to avoid their regime change. Without funds their Hate America non profit groups will disappear like Air America is disappearing. When that happens, they will lose a lot of power.
4 more years of GW and enough senators to bust their dying hold in the Senate will be the end of the power they have had in Washington since WWII.
They are desperate and will do anything to defeat President Bush this November.
