ATLANTA — He tapped voter anger to emerge from a primary field full of experienced Republican officeholders. A political outsider, he had a name most voters recognized, a business background fused to a populist message and, given that he was funding his own campaign, a self-avowed freedom from lobbyists and special interests.

Over the course of the year, Trump contributed more than $1 million to the National Republican Senatorial Committee, but it was Perdue’s race that captured his interest — an interest that was less about 2014 than 2016.

In Perdue’s Senate strategy, Trump saw the makings of a White House run of his own. And two years later, Trump has used that blueprint to not only capture the South, but to steal the region away from Ted Cruz on his way to the lead of the GOP primary.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but people like Trump better than Cruz.

“Cruz and Rubio don’t have a path to win...All they can do is hope for a contested convention.”

Which then lets the GOPe PICK OUR CANDIDATE, yet again. Probably Romney or Jeb.

I certainly won’t vote to enable that.

Yes, in spades!

Simply observe the love in Trump rallies.
Then compare that with Cruz rallies.
Stark contrast!

Strategically speaking, Rube & Cruz both staying in the race through April helps Trump win more states. JMHO.

Yep. I mean, we can argue all night about this detail or that position, but the vast majority of people pay no attention to any of that stuff, they just decide who they like the best and vote for that person. And “liking” isn’t as simple as it seems, but clearly big bold strong themes that they can identify with are going to be more effective than wonky nuanced policy details, and that’s Trump’s whole approach.

“How Trump stole the South from Cruz”

Decades of dumbing down the population has led us to this point.

I agree. Everybody staying in for a little while helps Trump.

Good argument. Wish it comes to pass as you lay out.

Nope.

94 million without jobs, 46 million on food stamps.

25-30 million working part time or sub-skill level jobs.

That is what is driving this election process. Trump is addressing their fears and anger.

Most likely its due to the South getting fed up with the globalist BS being pushed by the GOP.

I think the whole country is in the same boat as the south.

Yep. His speech/press conference was impressive. I think he sealed the deal. He came out looking Presidential, talking about what American people want to hear. Jobs, immigration, veterans, etc. Answered a bunch of questions.

Cruz came out snarky and in attack mode. Not a good plan...especially when you’re losing.

Little Marco had some weird celebration, speaking Spanish, and talking about freedom for Venezuela....

He kept Cruz under 50% and got some of the delegates.

Doesn’t Texas have 155 delegates? I thought that was what made it the biggest prize of all.

You are right. There is probably a quite a bit of surprise among some on here and in the party that Americans cannot get that excited about a GOP promoting interventionism, open borders, endless wars, free trade, cheap labor and union busting.

Texas delegates will be split two ways proportionally between Cruz and Trump. So Trump probably get 60 delegates vs 95 delegates for Cruz

Oh I agree.

I want Kasich and Carson to hang around for a bit more too.

Kasich has admitted he is rung for the VP slot. If Trump or Cruz gets to the convention and is 25 delegates short and Kasich has 28 delegates then there is you ticket right there. I am not a Kasich fan bet that is his plan

yes Texas has 155 delegates. But it is NOT a winner take all state. SO Cruz may end up with 80, Trump with 70, Rubio 5.

Rubio won’t get any delegates in Texas, he needed 20%+ to get any delegates

Yes but to get them all you need to win 50%
Cruz did not, and Rubio didn’t get 20% so get s none.

It means Trump and Cruz will split them.
