Most people cringe at the sight of a pregnant woman smoking. Some people feel strongly enough to say something in protest. But one local man took matters into his own hands early Friday when, according to police, he shot an expectant mother who refused to put out her cigarette.

You're the one who used the term "hate crime" when you said (quote):
I see this as a hate crime against Shane because of cigarettes.
Did you forget what you typed?
Thanks for the correction, and I agree 100%.
It is not illegal to kill an unborn child, an unborn child is just a mass of tissue under current law, and certainly is not murder. Women kill a million of them each year since Roe vs. Wade and get off scott free.
Same with me and my daughter.
But because she weighed under 6 pounds (5 14) I've had antis claim that her "low birth weight" was due to my smoking. Considering I only weighed about 115 when I got pregnant and weighed less than 6 pounds when I was born - I tend to laugh them all off.
At 4 she is tall and slender (just like me) and people who don't know her consider her to be petite - until she decides to take off - this kid is so strong that even her daddy has trouble at times controlling her!!!!
It's such a shame all the damage I have done to her because I smoked while pregnant and smoke in her presence.
And speaking of damage, one of the anti-s biggest things is about learning disabilities - she's half way through kindergarten and is not eligible to be enrolled in kindergarten until September 2003!!!!!!!!! I guess if I didn't smoke she would be ready for Harvard already.
This would not have happened if it was still illegal for women to smoke cigarettes.
Prior to the 1920's when every state in America prohibited women from smoking, not one woman was ever shot for smoking. No babies were ever harmed, and no man was running from the police. Allowing women to smoke has caused a myriad of problems, both healthwise, and otherwise.
Smoking itself may someday be a hate crime.
Ummm...because your wants and desires aren't the single driving rule in society? Because the world does not belong to you and sway solely to your whims? Buh-bye now!
How can "The Church" hand down edicts when they are too busy hiding pedophiles.
And the real issue would be....?
See, I thought the issue involved a person who, obviously triggered by hysterical anti-smoking propaganda, shot a woman.
It's not your business or anyone else's whether this woman smokes while pregnant, although you're trying to steer the discussion in that direction.
Personally, I don't care if your wife goes bungee jumping while she's pregnant; it's her choice.

Help?
I am not trying to be rude, but you have aparently not spent time dealing with some in the anti-smoking" groups.
Many of these people are certifiably "nuts." There are well known ones that are paid too make comments along the line of looking forward to smoking parents will be jailed and their children removed and placed in state care (had that said to me just recently), others are looking forward to the day they can plow under tobacco farmers crops while the farmer and family are watching, that tobacco company executives should be shot repeatedly with small caliber weapons in the region below their belts in order to suffer a slow painful death. But the best I believe was the one that said a woman who chooses to smoke while pregnant should have an abortion because the child would be better off never being born than being born to such a person.
Non-smokers, I have no problems with and will abide any request of not smoking in their proximity that is reasonable. Anti-smokers are an entirely different breed of character.
That's roughly a block or two, btw.
And where do you live that you actually think that you are breathing "fresh" air?
You're another one that forgot the /sarcasm tag on your post, aren't you?
I can't honestly believe that anyone as a member of Free Republic would condone either the attempted/accidental shooting of this pregnant woman nor the beating deat of the 13 year old over the idea of smoking cigarettes.
It sounds less of a case of hate than a case of a crazy person running around loose.
And your reason for linking the two are...???
Wondering what's wrong with YOU.
Maybe my addiction is Political! Ha.
My husband states his smoking is his political statement. If they weren't busting on smokers all the time he probably would have quit years ago.
neither of us consider it an addiction - but please don't take my beer away from me (LOL)
Yes, I see where the one cousin has definitely lost in your lottery on life!! good for you!
