10 Great Excuses For Not Reading Your Bible
The Babylon Bee ^ | Jul 26, 2022 | BabylonBee.com

We get it. It's hard to read the divinely inspired word of the creator of the universe. He's so judgy! But, since your salvation might depend on it, you better get some great excuses ready to share on Judgment Day.

Here are some of the best excuses for not reading your Bible:

1. You just went to church last month and don't want to overdo it: You don't want to be an extremist!

2. It's not as encouraging as Your Best Life Now: Joel Osteen's prose is to die for.

3. If you take your eye off the Hot Pocket you're microwaving for one second it might burn: And then you'd be hungry! God wouldn't want that.

4. You already watched The Chosen: It's so hard to get into a good book if you already know how it ends.

5. Those 900 Korok seeds in Zelda: Breath of the Wild aren't going to collect themselves: Finding Korok seeds is a metaphor for finding Christ probably.

6. You're Donald Trump and don't need forgiveness: He has never done anything wrong, ever.

7. You're still recovering from the story of Ehud: Enough to give anyone PTSD.

8. You misplaced your copy and new ones are so hard to find: You have to walk all the way to the back of Barnes & Noble.

9. The Jordan Peterson lecture on Genesis you watched has you covered: Up yours woke moralists! We'll see who cancels who from paradise!

20. It's not like the Bible is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work, or anything like that: 'Cause if it were, you'd definitely meditate on it day and night.

The church doesn’t even read the Bible... Bwhay are you preaching to us for??

Churches don’t read Bibles, people do (or do not). How am I preaching to you? Why the hostility?

The convoluted explanations needed to justify Catholic doctrine and the fancies about Mary just go to show how little basis in reality they have.

What error?

The fantasies about Mary that the Catholic church teach as true are complete fabrications with NO support from the word of God, which we know is truth.

The only error is the lies spread about Mary, her life, her looks, her sinlessness, her deification, and her elevation to the position of Queen of Heaven.

I've heard that often and I don't doubt it's true in many people in the past. It's kind of taken on urban legend status like the stories of the mean nuns with the rulers-- many more people tell the story as a joke than actually experienced it. Neither one is something you'd find today, or in the last 60 or 70 years or so.

I was told that I shouldn’t read the Bible because I couldn’t understand it. The priests and nuns were trained and knew how to interpret it and if I had questions, I should ask them and they’d tell me what it meant.

And that was in the late 60’s, and told me by a nun.

This is a great and timely article from the Prophetess Devorah (The Bee).

R is for Resurrection, and for Redemption. Anyone who really wants out of the grave of EGYPT (one of those letters doesn't get along with the.. rest) would be wise to learn how to decode unicode "210" and fast, before its too late.

Ȑ
0210
LATIN CAPITAL LETTER R WITH DOUBLE GRAVE

While some ownership argument went on and on over a grave, like Italians all worked up over a parking spot, or somebody a double parked, nofalti er Naftali the cross-country runner of the family was dispatched into the RED tape of Egypt to retrieve the title deed (why rush, speedy and efficient service is not descriptive of bureaucracy, or of Rome in general.. guess ya have to experience the lonnng waits to really know and understand)...

"Deaf" Chushim (permutes to Mashiach) "didn't understand", only saw that his grandfather was being disrespected and his *funeral disrupted*. Chushim, unconcerned with permits, simply cut all the red tape and lopped off Esau's head such that it Rolled into the cave of Machpelah, named for being a double grave.

ROME, EDOM... whichever, both famous for their DOMEs.

Good to keep ahead of the timing, because it's tomorrow's date that is the 210th day of the year, with its holidays and observances, such as International Tiger Day (Tora! Tora! Tora! is the lightning attack, the swift surprise homophone on "tiger") and Lazarus of Bethany (aka Four Days Dead) day.

Bethany. Can you believe there is big mystery over the etymology of the name of the place, because "obviously" whoever came up with "house of dates" got it all wrong.

If I had to hazard a guess, I'd go with Beth Hinei, because as long as everybody's alive and present and all hands are raised up for one reason or another:

Don't leave out Pharaoh, because

Ólavsøka is the biggest summer festival in the Faroe Islands... The literal meaning is "Olaf's wake"... Like several other Faroese holidays, the vøka begins the evening before.. (wiki)

Olaf, from the Old Norse name Áleifr meaning "ancestor's descendant", derived from the elements anu "ancestor" and leifr "descendant"

Eats shoots and leaves, the world turns on a punctuation mark.

This is all like the "Kaneh bosem" song, because in concert vids the lead singer has introduced it as "a little song about smoking weed", -- weed, which is conjectured to be the 5th mystery ingredient in the holy anointing oil.

Be that as it may be, or not be, it's an Exodus song about the Spirit of Elohim, as in out of the mindset of Egypt that has already predetermined the fixed meaning, because it all goes downhill from there. No Vision -- it's the place where people perish. Good thing for ski slopes. They come with lifts.

Rolling Along

Great album cover. It's a "Brand New Day", with a sky that is the sailor's warning. And yet people longed for a sign from heaven.

***

Serach the search lady, the daughter of Happy, knew exactly where the bones (framework) of Joseph had been stashed deep cover for so long.

They were sunk deep in de Nile, which isn't just a river in Egypt.

How to escape, how to escape... it's just like everybody says, the famous quote that is here, there, and everywhere (aka passim), from *Stripes*:

"Lighten up, Francis."

(It's even a snowclone on this very thread.)

I like this dialog from the movie "Oscar":

You knew.

Of course I knew! I just had no idea.

"Rolling along" ~ a little book about Queen Esther saving her people

The Do'h of the Dawn says, It's a brand new Day.

The dark side never learns because already knows everything already.

Q.E.D. It's symbolized by a tombstone.

Pope Gregory I (Latin: Gregorius I; c. 540 – 12 March 604), commonly known as Saint Gregory the Great, was Bishop of Rome from 3 September 590 to his death.

So, FWIW, you are off by 1,000 years as to when Pope Gregory was so fulsome with hus praise of Mary of Magdala, sister of Martha and Lazarus of Bethany.

the error to which I am referring is to reject what the Church has to say about the blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven, self-identified:”I am the Immaculate Conception” (Our Lady of Lourdes), etc., etc., etc....

Say what you will, but Catholics duly behold, and have come to know extremely well, our mother (and yours).

And that was in the late 60’s, and told me by a nun.

Like I said, it happened to some decades ago. It’s not the case now and hasn’t been for a while. The Church in recent years (especially Pope Benedict) has made it a point to encourage Bible reading. There are so many good Catholic Bible studies and resources now there is really no excuse.

It’s on my summer reading bucket list this year. Been wanting to read the whole thing straight through for decades. I admit skimming through some of the genealogies and such. Was progressing along at a pretty good clip up until Psalms - seems like each one makes me stop, re-read, and pray.

I also skipped Job for the time being - I have a well-worn, pre-owned, leather-bound paperback size Bible that’s inexplicably missing several pages of it. I have plenty of other copies, but this one is my travel companion.

That’s great to hear!

I admit that I avoided reading Job for many years. My main hang up was that I found it confusing as to how I should take the speeches of Job’s friends and whether their advice was all bad, mostly good, but a mixture of good and bad. I’ve only recently been able to parse through all that and gain an appreciation of the book.

I would never discourage anyone from reading the Bible all the way through, but in my experience studying and teaching the Bible, the best way to approach it is by getting the Big Story first, then focusing down. The narrative of the Bible is found in the historical books like Genesis, Exodus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, Joshua, Judges, etc. They are very interesting to read and they give you a good grasp of salvation history on which to build. You can then read the other books in the context of the entire story. If you’re interested PM me and I can recommend some resources to get you started.

Your comments throughout this discussion have been spot-on.
What is bothersome to me is the ultimate consequence to the sincere people who have posted here. That will happen on the Day of Judgment.

We get a hint of that Day in Revelation 20. We will individually stand before the Lord — for sentencing, not determination of guilt. There will be the “books” [the Bible] and the Book of Life. We will be judged by what is written in the “books.”

Premise: The Lord’s judgment will be sharper than a two-edged sword.

As we give an account of our deeds, we will not be able to use Catechisms, traditions, commentaries, sermons, priests, ministers, pastors, elders, preachers, etc., in our defense. Those may help our understanding of scripture while we are alive; they will be unavailable at our Judgment.

Consider this:
Catholics: Some will appear before the Lord believing and practicing all understandings of Mary, the mother of Jesus, as their service to the Lord..
Protestants: Others will appear before the Lord asserting that they did not believe nor practice such an understanding in their service to the Lord.

These are mutually exclusive beliefs.
The Lord cannot judge them both worthy of salvation.
If the Lord declares the Catholic version to be correct, millions of “Christians” will be condemned.
If the Lord declares the Protestant version to be correct, millions of “Christians” will be condemned.

If the Lord permits both to enter heaven, then the Lord is neither just nor good.

If this is to be resolved so that we all can be confident that the Lord will welcome us into heaven, it must be that we must study the “books” with which the Lord will judge us on that Day.
That study of the “books” will be our source of knowledge, our source of guidance and ultimately, our source of assurance of salvation.

Doesn’t the verse: “Hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and not perceive: “ just shout in your ears?

As we give an account of our deeds, we will not be able to use Catechisms, traditions, commentaries, sermons, priests, ministers, pastors, elders, preachers, etc., in our defense.

Neither will we be able to rely on our personal interpretation of Scripture based upon our own denominational bias or personal prejudices.

Consider this:
Catholics: Some will appear before the Lord believing and practicing all understandings of Mary, the mother of Jesus, as their service to the Lord..
Protestants: Others will appear before the Lord asserting that they did not believe nor practice such an understanding in their service to the Lord.

Our God would be a very small God indeed if our salvation hinged on this one issue. We are saved by grace through faith working in love. Ultimately nothing else matters.

But if someone is serving Mary, they are not serving God. If they are trusting Mary, they are not trusting God.

Mary and God are not interchangeable. Trusting Mary does not be default translate into trusting God.

I would like some Catholic somewhere to explain exactly what the point of all this Mary stuff is anyways.

Will God not listen to those who follow Him when they pray?

Was Jesus atonement not enough in and of itself that works must be added to it?

Is the Holy Spirit incapable of giving grace to the believer that Mary is necessary to fill in?

If God can do it all, then what’s the point of all the Mary stuff? It’s redundant.

If Mary is necessary, then people think that God is not enough in and of Himself to do His own work without “help” from Mary and that makes God less than God and Mary greater than Him as she is filling in what He lacks.

FWIW, no Christians will be condemned. Many who call themselves Christians will be, but no genuine believers in JESUS, will be.

It appears that Catholics live in perpetual denial of the clear and obvious historical facts.

I can see the conflict. If they admit their church was wrong in even the smallest matter, the whole house of cards comes tumbling down because it’s NOT based on Scripture.
