Facebook has changed it’s name to “Meta”. I don’t blame them for wanting to change their name, Facebook is a tarnished brand, since they have lent themselves as Government censors, taken sides and influenced the last couple of elections, and internationally, they removed the Bible App to appease the Chinese, Communistic oppressor government.
So Jeff Zuckerberg revealed last week that the name would be here on known as “Meta”.
What does it mean?
Zuckerberg tells us that the word “Meta” is from the greek language and it means “Beyond”.
There is a concept which has been discussed and to which much investment and research has gone into, called the “Metaverse”.
We all know that we inhabit a “Universe”. It consists of all of the Created World, and constitutes reality as we know it. We Christians know that God created the Universe, and put us in it, choosing the times and boundaries which we all are to inhabit.
The Apostle Paul spoke of the Universe in this fashion, when He adressed the Philosophers on Mars Hill,
And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation; That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us: For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring. ( Acts 17: 26-28)
The universe is our reality. (Notice that it is a compound word,”Uni” and “Verse”, in short “One Word”?) We are put within the limits of time, space and matter which God himself set for us.
But our modern technological elite are pseudo gods, who would like to offer the human race a universe which is “Beyond” God’s universe. They would create a Metaverse, a virtual reality in which one can be anything they wish or imagine themselves to be, and in which they can live at any time period of their own choosing, and in which they can assign to themselves attributes and powers that would be impossible in this present universe.
Of course it would all be a virtual reality, augmented by technology, graphics, and the latest marvel’s of computerized intelligence.
The Metaverse is already well under way, for people have become rapidly conditioned to ask questions of Siri, (an AI robot) , to have conversations with another person about a product, only to have it presented to you on your personal computer to order. People can play out realistic fantasies; room to room urban warfare, driving in NASCAR, space travel, Athletic prowess, living out historical events, on and on I could go.
It is possible that the new virtual world which is beyond our own mundane world of limits, could become preferable, to our present world.
At the moment, people interact with each other online by going to websites such as social media platforms or using messaging applications. The idea of the metaverse is that it will create new online spaces in which people’s interactions can be more multi-dimensional, where users are able to immerse themselves in digital content rather than simply viewing it. What Is The Metaverse?
When I was a child I loved board games such as Monopoly, Chess, Strategy. I played for countless hours with my little green soldiers. We played at these games, but we didn’t enter into them in the sense of video games. A modern child’s game is a visceral experience, and therefore can be very addicting.
These modern games don’t lose their luster, as my collection of toy soldiers once did. They are vivid, and engaging. Could it be that many don’t ever want to leave the virtual world for the real one?
Worse yet, what happens if there is confusion between the real world and the virtual one, and some among us, who are weaker , or troubled, lose the distinction between the two?
Zuckerberg and friends want to take the internet to new levels of “virtual reality”. Try to imagine someone talking to you about a brand of shoes as you walk down the street, and suddenly a virtual screen appears and the shoes are holographically presented to you, and a way to virtually order them. They want to make the internet, omnipresent.
The internet has already radically altered the way people relate to each other, and to the extent that it has developed, it has proven to be addicting. Had you told me thirty years ago, that there would be a forum where millions of people would lay bare their lives, thoughts, loves, hatreds, even meal preferences for all of the World to see, I wouldn’t have believed it.
What is next?
When I first became a Christian, forty some years ago, It was a given that becoming a Christian meant the necessity of developing a prayer life. It was called “Quiet time” back then and there was quite a bit of teaching on the need and ways to develop it. We would strive to spend an hour with the Lord, and learn to seek(cultivate a relationship with) God.
It occurs to me now, with the ever-present use of I Phones, who would want to spend quiet hour with God, when they can amuse themselves non stop with an entire universe of music, documentary, podcasts, movies, etc etc. ? Only those who have a revelation from God of their utter need for him would do so, the rest are stimulated and amused to the point of death.
What the Metaverse wants to achieve is to immerse the world digitally, to broaden the reaches and effects of the Internet, and the ways people can interact with each other. It will be even more powerful than the current internet in it’s influence and alteration of reality.
The Word of God tells us that in the end, the majority of mankind will choose “the Lie” over “the Truth” and thus will “Have pleasure in unrighteousness” and ultimately be deceived and damned.
For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way. And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.( 2 Thessalonians 2:7-12)
I predict this will be more addictive than crack cocaine.

I don’t care how Zuckerberg skews the truth, if it walks like a duck and talks like a duck... . IMO
I take great delight in seeing Zuckerberg squirm.

It’s new, it’s HOT and you just gotta have it!
Steam VR has been doing this for a long time. They offer many beautiful, interactive worlds and locations in VR which you can make both private or public.
Several months ago, Facebook purchased Oculus. Probably to copy what Steam VR has already done.
To me FacePlant is a more appropriate name.
I have no doubt.
