12 quotes from St. Peter Damian(1000 years ago, on homosexuality amongst the clergy)
Bettnet ^ | February 24th, 2006 | Domenico Bettinelli

Posted on 02/21/2019 8:15:32 AM PST by Mrs. Don-o

The following 12 quotes come from the writings of St. Peter Damian, a great ascetic and monk who was especially troubled by the clergy and religious of his time who failed in their duties, especially celibacy.

Think of them as a year of monthly intentions for the US bishops to meditate upon in reparation for the Scandal:

Why have 12 quotes when he could have just as easily posted SCRIPTURE...

A BIBLICAL Message to LGBT folks EVERYWHERE!

Genesis 13:13
Now the men of Sodom were wicked and were sinning greatly against the LORD.

Genesis 18:20-21
20. Then the LORD said, "The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is so great and
their sin so grievous
21. that I will go down and see if what they have done is as bad as the outcry that has reached me. If not, I will know."

Genesis 19:4-7
4. Before they had gone to bed, all the men
from every part of the city of Sodom--both young and old--surrounded the house.
5. They called to Lot, "Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them
."
6. Lot went outside to meet them and shut the door behind him
7. and said, "No, my friends. Don't do this wicked thing.

Leviticus niv

18:22 Do not have sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman; that is detestable.

20:13 If a man has sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They are to be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.

Psalms 12:8 The wicked freely strut about when what is vile is honored among men.

Doonesbury Cartoon for Feb/08/2013

Isaiah 3:9 The look on their faces testifies against them; they parade their sin like Sodom; they do not hide it. Woe to them! They have brought disaster upon themselves.

2 Peter 2:13b Their idea of pleasure is to carouse in broad daylight. They are blots and blemishes, reveling in their pleasures while they feast with you.

Ezekiel 16:49-50
49. "`Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy.
50. They were haughty and did detestable things before me. Therefore I did away with them as you have seen.

Romans 1     New American Bible (Revised Edition) (NABRE)

18 The wrath of God is indeed being revealed from heaven against every impiety and wickedness of those who suppress the truth by their wickedness. 19 For what can be known about God is evident to them, because God made it evident to them. 20 Ever since the creation of the world, his invisible attributes of eternal power and divinity have been able to be understood and perceived in what he has made. As a result, they have no excuse; 21 for although they knew God they did not accord him glory as God or give him thanks. Instead, they became vain in their reasoning, and their senseless minds were darkened. 22 While claiming to be wise, they became fools 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for the likeness of an image of mortal man or of birds or of four-legged animals or of snakes.

24 Therefore, God handed them over to impurity through the lusts of their hearts for the mutual degradation of their bodies. 25 They exchanged the truth of God for a lie and revered and worshiped the creature rather than the creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. 26 Therefore, God handed them over to degrading passions. Their females exchanged natural relations for unnatural, 27 and the males likewise gave up natural relations with females and burned with lust for one another. Males did shameful things with males and thus received in their own persons the due penalty for their perversity. 28 And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God handed them over to their undiscerning mind to do what is improper. 29 They are filled with every form of wickedness, evil, greed, and malice; full of envy, murder, rivalry, treachery, and spite.

2 Peter 2

1. But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them--bringing swift destruction on themselves.
2. Many will follow their shameful ways and will bring the way of truth into disrepute.
3. In their greed these teachers will exploit you with stories they have made up. Their condemnation has long been hanging over them, and their destruction has not been sleeping.
4. For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but sent them to hell, putting them into gloomy dungeons to be held for judgment;
5. if he did not spare the ancient world when he brought the flood on its ungodly people, but protected Noah, a preacher of righteousness, and seven others;
6. if he condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah by burning them to ashes, and made them an example of what is going to happen to the ungodly;
7. and if he rescued Lot, a righteous man, who was distressed by the filthy lives of lawless men
8. (for that righteous man, living among them day after day, was tormented in his righteous soul by the lawless deeds he saw and heard)--
9. if this is so, then the Lord knows how to rescue godly men from trials and to hold the unrighteous for the day of judgment, while continuing their punishment.
10. This is especially true of those who follow the corrupt desire of the sinful nature and despise authority. Bold and arrogant, these men are not afraid to slander celestial beings;
11. yet even angels, although they are stronger and more powerful, do not bring slanderous accusations against such beings in the presence of the Lord.
12. But these men blaspheme in matters they do not understand. They are like brute beasts, creatures of instinct, born only to be caught and destroyed, and like beasts they too will perish.
13. They will be paid back with harm for the harm they have done.
Their idea of pleasure is to carouse in broad daylight. They are blots and blemishes, reveling in their pleasures while they feast with you.

But there IS hope!!!

1 Corinthians 6:9-11

9. Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived:
Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders
10. nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.
11. And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

If you could NOT change, you would be in most pitiful shape...

This problem did not suddenly develop under Francis’s watch.

It’e been going on worldwide for at least decades, and by all indications, according to the article you posted the other day, has been going on for over a millennium.

And you all think it’s going to suddenly change without it being obvious?

When it changes, we’ll see priests defrocked and jailed.

Until the Vatican takes action, not hidden action, but bold and out in the limelight action, to correct the problem, then it has given nobody any reason whatsoever to think that things have changed.

Anyone who thinks that things are changing, as in getting better, with no discernible evidence to support it is delusional at best.

I am with you. I believe in Christ’s promise. But try to get the leavers to believe it.

What's yer take on Mary's promise(s)??

The 15 promises

(Given to St. Dominic and Blessed Alan de la Roche)

1 Whoever shall faithfully serve me by the recitation of the Rosary, shall receive powerful graces.
2. I promise my special protection and the greatest graces to all those who shall recite the Rosary.
3. The Rosary shall be a powerful armor against hell, it will destroy vice, decrease sin, and defeat heresies
4. It will cause virtue and good works to flourish; it will obtain for souls the abundant mercy of God; it will withdraw the hearts of people from the love of the world and its vanities, and will lift them to the desire of eternal things. Oh, that souls would sanctify themselves by this means.
5. The soul which recommends itself to me by the recitation of the Rosary, shall not perish.
6. Whoever shall recite the Rosary devoutly, applying Himself to the consideration of its Sacred Mysteries shall never be conquered by misfortune. God will not chastise Him in His justice, he shall not perish by an unprovided death; if he be just, he shall remain in the grace of God, and become worthy of eternal life.
7. Whoever shall have a true devotion for the Rosary shall not die without the Sacraments of the Church.
8. Those who are faithful to recite the Rosary shall have during their life and at their death the light of God and the plentitude of His graces; at the moment of death they shall participate in the merits of the Saints in Paradise.
9. I  shall deliver from purgatory those who have been devoted to the Rosary.
10. The faithful children of the Rosary shall merit a high degree of glory in Heaven.
11. You shall obtain all you ask of me by the recitation of the Rosary.
12. All those who propagate the Holy Rosary shall be aided by me in their necessities.
13. I  have obtained from my Divine Son that all the advocates of the Rosary shall have for intercessors the entire celestial court during their life and at the hour of death
14. All who recite the Rosary are my children, and brothers and sisters of my only Son, Jesus Christ.
15. Devotion of my Rosary is a great sign of predestination.

"The Most Holy Virgin in these last times in which we live has given a new efficacy to the recitation of the Rosary to such an extent that there is no problem,

no matter how difficult it is, wheter temporal or above all spiritual, in the personal life of each one of us, of our families...that cannot be solved by the Rosary.

There is no problem, I tell you, no matter how difficult it is, that we cannot resolve by the prayer of the Holy Rosary."

Time to build up the Church. Time to gather to the foot of the Cross, and pray.

Until and unless things change at the Vatican level, building up the church is only enabling the abuse to continue.

You cannot call to build up an organization that is participating in this kind of abomination without becoming complicit in the sins/crime.

Is there ANYTHING that would cause you to leave the One True Church?

The silence is heart-crushing.

The silence is indicative of the true situation and condition of the church.

The silence tells us that NOTHING has changed. Your calls to continue tho support your church in light of that need some careful reconsideration.

Do you REALLY want to stand before God and explain how you supported the Vatican as it is today?

The churches in Revelation which refused to obey Christ in straightening out the problems HE pointed out to them were removed.

Catholicism, if it is indeed the OTC, is in no different a situation.

God will not protect someone in their willful and defiant sin, and His promise to never leave or forsake, is given to individual believers, not religious institutions that man has set up.

So where is the evidence that Jesus has not abandoned the Catholic church? Show us what He’s doing in it today.

What do you mean by "supported the Vatican is it is today?"

I *hope* you *didn't* mean, "supported the corruption": because with God as my witness I have never done so. To insinuate otherwise would be a falsehood, and, in context, probably a malicious one, as well.

Wishing to think better of you, I *guess* you may mean -- well what do you mean?

If blowing the whistle on moral defection; trying to arm my few students for what's coming next; shining the light on the dark places of corruption; communicating with bishops -- including my own --- and imploring them to speak out clearly and pay up personally; exhortng my fellow Catholics to "Fear not, stand your ground, and fight"; and doing such prayer and sacrifice as I am able --- if this is what you intend to criticize --- then go ahead, because I have never done enough. As the author of Hebrews says, "In your striving against sin, you have not yet resisted unto blood."

But what will the Lord say to those who left in the heat of battle, who yielded to spiritual sloth or despondency or cynicism, and abandoned their post; who left the sheepfold when the wolves made their appearance --- do you suppose He will congratulate them?

Christ said it is a hireling who flees. I pray I may not join the hirelings, who sinks down deflated, or absconds in a funk sweat in the season of crisis.

I am not obeying Christ if I leave the Church, THIS Church, with my hundreds of millions of spiritual ancestors stretching back to Pentecost.

I am a member of the Body of Christ. The self-amputated branch cannot bear fruit. The severed Hand can not heal the Body.

A person can’t *leave* the church when they ARE the church.

That’s what so many people don’t get.

The church is believers, not an organization or a denomination situated in a building.

In post 32 you said this......

“Time to build up the Church.”

If you consider Roman Catholicism as *the church* and you advocate for building it up, you’d better be careful what you are advocating *building up*.

"A person can’t *leave* the church when they ARE the church."

Exactly, metmom. Amen!

The fact that we ARE the Church, makes us responsible for the WHOLE Church, since we are, as St. Paul says, all members of one Body and we all need each other. All of us are working members: none of us is just along for the ride.

It is quite distorted to bring a "consumerist" attitude about the Church.

In a consumerist faith, the spoz-to-be believers are actually mere customers going to the local retailers for religious goods and services. They are in the market for "spiritual experiences," they are looking for a stress-free atmosphere, a warm fellowship, a good choir, a talented preacher, a set of practices that fit their spiritual esthetics. They church-shop until they find a retailer that will give them what they want to fulfill the "religion component" in their lives.

I am seeing lately how "consumerism" describes different kinds of people who hold the name of Christian.

The key would be how they respond when the gratifications and satisfactions of "church-life" dwindle, and the pains and aggravations increase.

The consumerist will be out the door, looking for a more satisfactory retail church experience elsewhere.

The "We ARE the Church", member-of-the Body believer will stand his ground and fight for the doctrinal and moral integrity of the WHOLE church, even if it means a battle to the death.

The biggest mistake would be, I think, not staying at the foot of the Cross (with John and Mary) and instead heading for the tall grass. We don't forget that the first time the Apostles (predecessors of the Bishops) are recorded as acting "collegially," was here: "Then all of the disciples left Him and fled." (Matthew 26:56) Not time to leave. Time to build up the Church. Time to gather to the foot of the Cross, and pray.

Sure...as long as you agree that the "church" is not just the Roman Catholic church but the TRUE church which is all those who are members of the body of Christ, His sheep, His bride. Perhaps it IS time to leave false churches - those who have putrid rot at the leadership level seeing as the fish rots from the head down. Christ would not want us to remain in fellowship within any visible organization that preaches one thing yet acts in direct opposition to it.

Anyone who thinks that things are changing, as in getting better, with no discernible evidence to support it is delusional at best.

You know... I was thinking about all the times RCs here have criticized non-Catholic churches for missing out on the "benefits" of having one central authority over them like Roman Catholicism has. I think what we see here with this issue is the very real downside to such a thing when it comes time to "clean house" at the very top. If, as it has been asserted, homosexuals have infiltrated every level and those whose duty before God is to mete out discipline and remove those in leadership positions who are involved in gross sin and scandal are ALSO involved, then I can see how a thorough house cleaning would be nearly impossible. It would practically annihilate a major percentage of the leaders and then who would remain to do the leading?

I see the wisdom in maintaining local churches whose leaders are answerable to their congregation and a board of elders to ensure faithfulness to the Biblical truths and who lead by example in holiness. I think that is how Christ designed it.

Rum can give that kind of perspective, but of course rum is nice.

Yup.

With smaller congregations, if someone goes off the rails, it mitigates the damage done.
