The biggest mistake would be, I think, not staying at the foot of the Cross (with John and Mary) and instead heading for the tall grass. We don't forget that the first time the Apostles (predecessors of the Bishops) are recorded as acting "collegially," was here: "Then all of the disciples left Him and fled." (Matthew 26:56) Not time to leave. Time to build up the Church. Time to gather to the foot of the Cross, and pray. Sure...as long as you agree that the "church" is not just the Roman Catholic church but the TRUE church which is all those who are members of the body of Christ, His sheep, His bride. Perhaps it IS time to leave false churches - those who have putrid rot at the leadership level seeing as the fish rots from the head down. Christ would not want us to remain in fellowship within any visible organization that preaches one thing yet acts in direct opposition to it.

(Not by works of righteousness which we have done but according to His mercy he saved us.)

Sure...as long as you agree that the "church" is not just the Roman Catholic church but...I have a vague, nagging feeling that this would NEVER happen.
But then; even St. Paul got struck blind; so...
