Swimming against the tide of promises to crack down on abuse and cover-up led by Pope Francis, a newly created Mexican cardinal said that some accusers should be “ashamed” to point their finger at clerics because many of them have skeletons in their own closets.

The victims of pedophilia who “accuse men of the Church should [be careful] because they have long tails that are easily stepped on,” said Cardinal Sergio Obeso Rivera.

The cardinal, emeritus Archbishop of Xalapa, in Veracruz, Mexico, spoke to journalists before a celebration he led in his former diocese.

Sounds like a threat to me. Intimidation and blackmail have been the calling cards of the lavender mafia that has entrenched itself within the Church. If the Vatican won’t move against prelates like this, the laity need to. Honestly, I don't trust the DAs and AGs any more than I trust the Church hierarchy.

There's a good reason for that. One of the first high-profile lawsuits involving priests abusing children was in New Orleans about 30 years ago. During the course of the civil lawsuit related to the matter it was revealed that the district attorney had helped the diocese sweep the whole thing under the rug.

The DA's name was Harry Connick Sr. -- the father of Harry Connick Jr.
